Hahndorf Soccer Club vs Nairne Knights Soccer Club

The Hahndorf Under 8’s soccer team put on a dominant display on Saturday morning to win a deserved match against Nairne.

From the outset Hahndorf showed great control of the game with outstanding passing and teamwork from all players.

Brooklyn Rohde defended the goals for the 1st half and stopped a number of Nairne attempts.

Kept busy for the entire game was Carter Hartley who kicked 2 goals and Jack Coffey who kicked 1 goal. Jasper Christou and Hamish Glynn provided great defence and consistently worked the ball back to the forward line.

Angus Clifton, Samuel Gardner and  Paddy Coffey stopped many attacks and showed great team work running the ball back into the Hahndorf forward line.

The 2nd half saw the Hahndorf Magpies remain strong and consistent, with Michael Griggs defending the goals.

Brooklyn Rohde with Griggs and Hugo Dahmke dominating the midfield opening up multiple opportunities for strikes at goal.

Both teams played with great spirit, fun and teamwork, providing the supporters with an exhilarating game to watch.

Woodside Warriors Soccer Club Red vs Mount Barker United Soccer Club Gold

Saturday 19th June, 2021 Under 9 teams – Woodside Warriors Soccer Club (WWSC) Red played Mount Barker United Gold at the Mount Barker Summit Football Club. Both teams met under specifically cold and wet conditions, however the conditions did not hold back or prevent any spectacular team work. Spectators witnessed enthusiastic and energetic play from both sides, each team demonstrating strategic fancy footwork in passing to team members, intercepting opposition passes and dribbling down the field. Bastian French determined a remarkable maneuverer with an opponent close behind, but this didn’t divert his focus as he successfully brought the ball down the field. Quinn Klein, Elliot Stewart and Justin Smith each contributed to the team’s effort in offense while Samuel Clifford, Logan Bridge and Arlo Areamkaew supported the team with some tactical defence. Lily Foster and Joshua Clifford also supported with inadvertent kicks and interceptions throughout the game. An exciting game played by all.

Hahndorf Soccer Club vs Stirling United Soccer Club

The Hahndorf u9s played a solid game against Stirling United for their round 10 match.  In the first half Hahndorf were quick out the blocks and pushed forward  with Hugo Curtis and Thomas Gould creating scoring opportunities. Joshua Blain and Rowan Gilroy were solid in defence, intercepting the ball when Stirling United attempted to enter their attacking half. The Stirling United goalkeeper was kept busy defending shots from Hahndorf. Hahndorf's persistence paid off when Gould had a free kick and converted by kicking over the opposition's heads for a brilliant goal.

Hahndorf continued attacking with Owen Hoyle running down the flank with a good shot at goal, which was just saved on the line.
Stirling United were determined to push the ball forward and despite strong goalkeeping from Hahndorf's Oliver Knight, Stirling managed a great goal to level the score. Hahndorf responded with Gould converting again towards the end of the first half.

In the second half Hahndorf had the majority of play.  Mason Saywell and Hoyle were a thorn in Stirling United's side, thwarting their attacks.
Great teamwork saw Curtis and Knight shooting for goals which unfortunately were saved. Throughout the second half, Soren Mickan and Gould kept attacking too. Mickan scored a fine goal as a result of great passing by Hahndorf and soon after Gould found the back of the net again for Hahndorf. Blain's goalkeeping in the second half kept Hahndorf safe and Knight chased down his opponent to save a goal at the end of the match.

It was an evenly fought match, and a great team effort by both Hahndorf and Stirling United.

Woodside Warriors Soccer Club Blue vs Woodside Warriors Soccer Club Red

Woodside Warriors U9 Blue against Strathalbyn U9 Red

With Euro 2020 on at the moment and offering some really entertaining and dramatic football, we were hoping our U9s would take inspiration from Griezmann and Mbappe’s lightening forward runs, Italy’s dominance, Denmark’s bravery and Scotland’s dogged determination against the Auld Enemy earlier that morning as they hosted Strathalbyn Red this week on a soggy pitch at the Rec Grounds.

Woodside won the toss and elected to kick off, immediately applying pressure to Strath and taking the game to the visitors. The Warriors had the lion’s share of possession and chances in the first half, confining Strath to their own end of the pitch and creating at least four good scoring opportunities, including an Austin Levy shot that whistled wide. Despite this it was Strath who had the ball in the net first, catching Woodside on the break and squeezing in a shot that only just beat the Warriors’ keeper. Woodside continued to knock at the door for the remainder of the first half but were frustrated by a resolute Strath defence and went into the break still looking for an opening.

The Warriors knew that in the second half they had to turn possession into goal-scoring opportunities to get anything out of the game, and this week’s captain Noah Paech took up the challenge and broke through the Strath defence to score and open Woodside’s account for the week. Strath managed to find a reply to leave Woodside chasing the game again, but to their credit our under 9s kept their heads up, continuing to press Strath to win possession and showing real progress with their passing. Tommy Garden and Lachlan Mitchell dropped back from midfield into defensive roles to nullify further Strath attacks, which allowed the relatively fresh defenders to move forward and bring new energy to the midfield. This tactic paid off, with Calum Magee showing a lovely bit of skill to beat a couple of Strath defenders and find the net. The Warriors went looking for more, but time wasn’t on their side and the final whistle brought an entertaining and tense match to a close.

Woodside were unfortunate not to come away with more from this game but Strath deserve a lot of credit for absorbing significant pressure and taking their chances with a team who all played the full 40 minutes. Thank you to Andrew for refereeing again this week and to Peter for helping organize and warm-up the team.

U10

Torrens Valley Soccer Club vs Hahndorf Soccer Club

Torrens Valley U10’s travelled to Hahndorf on a cold, wet and wintry day. Both teams opted to field 7 players with minimal subs to keep the players warm.

The first half started slow with the players still warming up. Hahndorf set the game in motion with a good strike at goals. Torrens Valley were managing to get the ball up in front of goals but were held off by some good defending from Hahndorf. Some great skills were shown when a Torrens Valley midfielder ran with the ball from the halfway line and kept the Hahndorf defence chasing, managing to have a strike on goal which was stopped by the Hahndorf goalkeeper. Hahndorf turned the ball around for a quick counter attack surprising the Torrens Valley defence and beating the keeper to score the first goal. The goal seemed to spur Hahndorf on who kept the attack up for the rest of the first half, scoring another goal for their team.

The second half displayed the slippery conditions with a spot of rain the players were finding it difficult to stay on their feet at times and were having trouble keeping hold of the ball. The Hahndorf attack remained strong with them taking advantage of the Torrens Valley defence being off their line to score. A lot of play was happening in front of goals for Hahndorf with majority of the possession. Hahndorf were granted a corner which was taken well but stopped by the goalkeeper. Hahndorf were then granted a free quick not far outside the goal box but some quick defence from the Torrens Valley side kept it outside of the goal area. Well done to both teams in some muddy and difficult conditions.

Hahndorf Soccer Club vs Torrens Valley Soccer Club

The U10s played Torrens Valley at home this week. It was drizzling at kick off and it looked to be a rather wet game. Jhett Frost scored the first goal of the game in the early minutes of the match. Followed with a second shot by Frost that was defended by the Torrens Valley goalie. Conner Ozolins also had a shot on goal which was caught by the goalie, and little later Ozolins successfully found the net, bringing U10s their second goal. Lucca Falvo-Lopez and Ashon Broadbent also had goals on target which were saved by the keeper. Cohen Whinfield and Caleb Early filled the defense, with Early playing a strong 1:1 defensive move, cutting off the opponents run and Whinfield saving a goal late in the half. The second half saw several more attempts on goal, including a quick pass from Whinfield to Cootes that swung just wide of the mark. Lachlan Gardner was strong in defense gaining a free kick to smoothly bring the ball back to Hahndorf's attacking half. The final goal of the game was brought by Whinfield late in the second half. Just before final whistle the sun came out on the pitch, topping off a fine game for the U10 team.

Woodside Warriors Soccer Club vs Mount Barker United Soccer Club Red

Woodside hosted Mount Barker United Red at home on Saturday in better than expected conditions.  It was a great game for spectators with multiple goals for both teams.  The first half was very evenly matched with end to end action.  Woodside came out stronger in the second half displaying some excellent team work and defence skills.  Passing is improving every week and it's fantastic to watch these players grow together.  Well done all!

U11

Hahndorf Soccer Club vs Woodside Warriors Soccer Club

It was a cold and wet morning when Hahndorf under 11 boys took on the Woodside Warriors at the Woodside home ground. Both teams came out strong with great defense from the Woodside warriors and a great fighting spirit from Hahndorf who made a number of attempts on goal in the first half. 5 minutes from the end of the first half Hahndorf broke the ice with their first goal followed in close succession by another.

The second half saw renewed vigor from both sides who were keen to shake off the cold by engaging fully in the game. Once again Woodside put up a good fight with solid defense, but Hahndorf managed to get three goals past them.

Great fun was had by all. Thank you to the players, officials and parents of both teams.

U12

Woodside Warriors Soccer Club (5) vs Mount Barker United Soccer Club (0)

Mount Barker U12 hosted Woodside Warriors on the synthetic Summit pitch for the early game. Both sides have had a fairly successful season so far with the Warriors only loosing to ladder leaders Stirling Districts Blue and the recently departed Hahndorf SC, and Barker sitting well up the table with a collection of memorable victories.

But it was Woodside who dominated this contest. Right from the outset Woodside were able to take control of the match and set camp in oppositions territory. Their passing game was exquisite as they chipped the ball around, probing for a way to break through the line. They did this on numerous occasions, with a flurry of early chances fading wide, hitting the post or being saved by the talented Barker gloveman. When Barker countered they looked every chance to goal as they sent the ball long and got behind the Woodside defensive line. This strategy was aided by the superfast synthetic pitch and the greasy conditions brought on by persistent drizzle. But Woodside were able to adapt to the conditions, defending from a little deeper in their own half to nullify the through-ball and covering well, with the second and third defenders anticipating every pass-through-the-line and arriving in time to stop the Barker advance. And when Woodside took possession they followed their patterns – beating their opponent, looking for support and clearing to a team-mate. The midfielders too were on their game, creating a wall behind their forwards to intercept every Barker clearance and return it with interest. It must be said that the Warriors were wasteful in front of goal again this week, converting 5 out of 23 shots for the match, but poise and accuracy in front of goal comes with experience and that can only come with time. The impressive thing from Woodside is their willingness to play their designated role and build a game for mutual benefit. With three goals in the first half, another two after half-time and a clean sheet for their goalies, Woodside were deserved winners in this contest.

U13 Div 1

Woodside Warriors Soccer Club Red (4) vs Hahndorf Soccer Club Black (4)

Warriors met up against the new Hahndorf U13 Black at their home ground. Both teams went at it as soon as the first whistle blew. Both teams seemed to be well matched and applied pressure the whole way down the pitch. Both teams were able to have a few cracks at goal, but the goalies were not letting anything past them. Seems we were at a gridlock with neither team managing to score for the first 20 minutes of the game. Play went back and forth down the pitch until the 23-minute mark when great teamwork saw Warriors score the first goal for the match. Hahndorf ramped up their defense determined to show Warriors they were up to the challenge and responded to Warrior’s goal with one of their own. Game was once again tied up with both teams working hard. Warriors managed to find a gap in Hahndorf defense and snuck in their second goal inside the last minute of the first half. Warriors leading 2-1 at half time. Hahndorf came out hard and fast in the second half hungry for a goal and it paid off when they found the gap and shot for goal scoring the fist goal only 5 minutes into the second half. That put the score at 2 goals each. Warriors fast realizing they had to step it up a notch if they wanted the win. Warriors tightened up defenses and made some great passes through the middle and it worked. Warriors scoring the next 2 goals. Hahndorf were not going to go down without a fight though. They doubled up their defense and ties Warrior’s strikers up denying them any more scoring shots. Hahndorf midfield found opportunities to get through Warrior’s defense and continued to push on. Hahndorf scored the last 2 goals for the match and once again tied the score up. Both teams worked hard, and final score was tied up at 4 all.

U15

Woodside Warriors Soccer Club Blue (8*) vs Blackwood Forest Soccer Club (2)

Leaving Woodside it was a wet and miserable day. However, the other side of the tunnel had the sun shining and no sight of rain.

After the usual warm up the team still waited for the final two members of the team, but when the whistle sounded all were there and ready to play. Woodside were dominant from the outset and settled into their usual routine of playing good sensible football. They continued to find a way though their opponents defense and get shots on goal. With accurate shooting Woodside were in control and easily in-front. Blackwood worked hard but in the first half didn’t have the answers for the Warriors who found each other in the right space.

When the second half began Blackwood were a different team and Woodside had forgotten what they had achieved in the first half. If you were a spectator you may have forgotten the score as Blackwood dominated in defense and went back to playing the long ball and put pressure on Woodside’s. As the half continued Blackwood closed down their opponents opportunities and were attacking at speed. When Blackwoods centre forward ran on to a ball he only had the keeper to beat but an outstretched hand pushed his shot wide. It was not long before the Blackwood striker had another chance this time putting it home. Woodside lost its shape and were getting frustrated with Blackwoods ball movement. Nothing should be taken away from Blackwoods efforts and determination. They had a goal - win the half - and they were willing to work hard to achieve it. Blackwood managed to score another goal before Woodside scored the last of the morning.

Congratulations to Blackwood in the second half who played as a team and proved that Woodside can be beaten, even if it’s for a half. While Woodside had sealed their victory in the first half Blackwood continues to be the only team that troubles Woodside score sheet scoring 5 of the 9 goals Woodside has conceded so far this season.

Blackwood Forest Soccer Club (2) vs Woodside Warriors Soccer Club Blue (8*)

Spectators of the Blackwood Forest vs Woodside Blue match held at Springbank Secondary College would be forgiven for thinking they were watching 2 different teams after half-time, such was the change in play.

In the first half, Woodside showed their passing and game play prowess. Their coordinated attack led the home team 8-0 at the half-time whistle. Blackwood were simply unable to get into the flow after a two week break due to a previous round Bye leading into the long weekend. The few times they were able to direct the ball into their attacking half, the Woodside defense held true.

After the half-time break a very composed Blackwood team stepped onto the pitch. Their passes and dribbling were much sharper, which resulted in Blackwood's Elisha S scoring twice from some marvelous team assists. The home team's defence also solidified, and they were able to restrict Woodside to a single goal.

The final scoreline Blackwood 2 - Woodside 9

Stirling United Soccer Club (1) vs Woodside Warriors Soccer Club (3)

The heavy rain of the past week saw this weeks fixture moved from a water-logged Heathfield High School oval to Woodside to allow the game to proceed. There was definitely the threat of rain but a couple of light showers during the game didn’t dampen either teams spirit.

Both teams started positively, with defences holding firm and no really clear chances at either end. A corner for Woodside saw a goal mouth skirmish and the ball somewhat fortunately finding the back of the net from Izeyah Raymond. Almost immediately, Woodside got another chance, with a through ball finding Lachlan Mowbray unmarked and one on one with Henry Monaghan in goal. Mowbray calmly placed the ball in the bottom right corner to extend the lead to 2 leading into half time.

The game started to open up after the break, with both sides creating chances. Stirling were stringing multiple passes together to move the ball down field but couldn’t find the back of the net, taking shots from distance. At the other end, Woodside continued to threaten, with a number of great chances either missing wide or over the top. Eventually, Mowbray extended the lead, with another quality finish.

Despite the deficit, Stirling kept pushing forward, trying to get back into the game, and creating a number of opportunities. With Monaghan released from goal keeper duties for the second half, many of these chances were due to his creativity, including a delightful backheel which saw Tom Harris in the clear but his shot to the near post was comfortably saved by the keeper. Another great piece of team play saw Stirling finally on the scoreboard, when Araby Phelan released Ky Henry on the right wing, whose cross was volleyed superbly by Monaghan into the back of the net.

Two mid-season recruits stood out for Stirling. Down back, Doni Savva was dominant, controlling the right side of the Woodside attack through a combination of great reading of the play and strong tackling. Meanwhile, Lottie Miller in midfield was creative throughout, demonstrating her agility and skill getting through some tricky situations.

Whilst Woodside took the points on the day, Stirling showed that with a few recent additions to the squad, they won’t be able to be taken lightly in the second half of the season.

Woodside Warriors Soccer Club (3) vs Stirling United Soccer Club (1)

The week leading up to Round 10, held Saturday 19th June, saw ongoing rain across the Adelaide Hills. Even the city copped an impressive amount.

Clubs have varying amounts of sensitivity to pitch protection. Woodside is a little more liberal with their somewhat durable venue, whilst Stirling United’s venue is mostly out of their hands. Heathfield High School as an outdoor sporting venue is not built for a lot of rain. Volleyball, Heathfield’s feature sport, is mostly played indoors of course so outdoor drainage probably isn’t a priority.

After a few days of rain it wasn’t a surprise when the Woodside Coach received a call from the Stirling United Coach to see if Woodside could host the game instead. With a pitch available at 9am the answer was obvious.

The weekend prior was the Queen’s birthday long weekend so it had been a fortnight since the pitch’s last game. As such the lines were a little faded. An early turn up for the line-marking crew fixed the issue, but discovered another – a late night / early morning burnout session by the local hoons. Thankfully the damage was light and didn’t stop the game from proceeding.

Referee James McArthur was running the show and got the game started on the dot of 9am.

From kick-off it was clear that the SUFC U17 team of the second half of this season isn’t going to be the same as the first. Whilst it was evident they were missing the likes of goal-keeper Calen McCormick and defender Kye McDonald, other pick-ups in Andoni Savva and Charlotte Miller strengthens them for the journey through to the end of the season.

It took 23 minutes for Woodside to open up the scoring. A corner from the master, Casey Godfrey, lead to a pinball machine like moment in front of goals, ultimately ending with Izeyah Raymond putting it away, his second goal for the season.

Two minutes later Lachlan Mowbray added a second goal for Woodside. This ramped up the pressure for Stirling United, who was keen to not let the opposition get the better of them.

No more goals saw Woodside 2-0 up at half time.

The second half played out very differently than the first. Stirling’s Billy Wilson managed to find the venue, which is surprising given this was his home ground last season. Meanwhile some of the rust had fallen off Andoni Savva.

AHJFA U16 Reps and Stirling United player Henry Monaghan managed to get one past Woodside’s keeper. It wasn’t scrappy. It never is from Monaghan. There are no stand out features looking at him. He’s neither big nor overly fast, but if he’s given an opportunity to boot it, he will. It’s usually perfect.

This of course lead to a chorus of cheers from Stirling’s supporters, something of a role reversal between the two teams over the last four years of play. Any goal is worth a cheer but some are more important than others.

Despite their best efforts another goal from Lachlan Mowbray on the 59th minute put Woodside two goals in front and all but sealed the deal on the game. Stirling United kept the pressure up, if only to provide a talking point for Woodside.

“They’ll be a concern for all teams for the rest of the season”, said Coach Bruce Tonkin of Stirling United. “With a full suite of players available we would have had a different result. We’ll need to assess our approach to that final game when we see them in five rounds.”

A stand out performance from Hayden Davis saw him receive Best & Fairest from the game. Notable plays from Angus Wilkins and Samuel Herman saw them pick up second and third respectively.

Stirling United will host Rangers in the next round whilst Woodside will travel to Pine Avenue to play top-team Hahndorf.

Rangers Junior Soccer Club (6) vs Strathalbyn Strikers FC Inc (3)

The whistle blew at 10am for the game between Rangers and Strathalbyn. It was quite cold from the beginning of the match, and it drizzled intermittently as the game went on – an average winter's day at Ashton Oval.

The game started firmly in the favour of Rangers, having many chances while the defence, led by captain Tommy Playford, caused Strathalbyn to struggle to get a shot on target. In the 15th minute, a Rangers corner kick flew past the back post to Alex Smith, who controlled the ball and slotted it past the many players to open the scoring.

Play began to slow down afterwards, with few chances and many throw-ins. After roughly 20 minutes, centre-back Charles Kammerman took a free kick from around half-way, curling it around the Strathalbyn defence to Errol Martin, who finished it cleanly with a volley. Just minutes after, Riley Smith found the goal from Strathalbyn defender's deflection, bringing the score to 3-0 at half time.

Strathalbyn started out strongly in the second half, getting two quick goals from set pieces. Their shots were powerful, and the attack was always ready to follow up. A missed penalty from Shannon Cox kept Strathalbyn well in the game - however Shannon got a second penalty not long after, finishing strongly into the bottom right corner.

The Strikers responded quickly, with great passing play leading to a their third goal - the shot was excellent, finding the bottom corner from far outside the box. The game stayed at 4-3 for what seemed like hours, until Shannon Cox got 1 on 1 with the keeper on 2 occasions and finished cleanly, getting his first hat-trick of the season.

Surprisingly, the score line was the exact same as the teams’ last matchup earlier in the season. Both teams played well and showed great sportsmanship.

Stirling Districts Soccer Club (1) vs Torrens Valley Soccer Club (1)

Showery weather didn’t put a dampener on this action-packed encounter. Torrens and SDFC battled it out in the midfield with neither side getting further than the edge of 18-yard box until Torrens got some clear air around 15th minute to go one on one with the SDFC keeper. The shot well struck Torrens took the lead 1-0. The midfield battle continued until the 32nd minute when sustained SDFC pressure saw them slot an equaliser – the way it would stay till half time.

The second half saw both sides pushing hard to gain ascendency and the momentum swung too and fro between the sides as they attacked, and counter attacked in sustained waves. SDFC were unlucky not to convert many good chances while Torrens were denied many times by some inspired goal keeping. With neither side giving an inch the final whistle saw a very entertaining game drawn 1-1.

Torrens Valley Soccer Club (2) vs Stirling Districts Soccer Club (4)

Torrens Valley U17 girls were to travel to Bradwood Park to meet Stirling Districts, but due to the wet weather the venue was changed to Strathalbyn’s grounds. The weather was wet and cold but the pitch was still in good condition for the U17 girls teams to play.

Stirling Districts came out strong from the first whistle and took a couple of opportunities at the goals. They kept the attack up but the Torrens Valley defence and goalkeeper were holding them off from scoring. Finally the ball broke through the Torrens Valley defence line and a strong run from a Stirling Districts forward neatly placed the ball in the back of the net. Torrens Valley then attempted to turn the game around and had two strong strikes on goal but neither got past the Stirling Districts goalkeeper. The game slowed down a bit while a light shower of rain came over. Torrens Valley were keen to even the score and kept the ball in front of the goal but missed an opportunity to score from a corner. Finally a ball was placed perfectly in front of a Torrens Valley midfielder who, with a brilliant strike just outside the penalty area, found the top corner pocket.

Both teams went into the second half wanting to break the tie for their teams. With the sound of a crackle of cockatoos in the background the teams kept each other at bay in a very evenly matched second half. A corner was granted to Stirling Districts who took it beautifully but the Torrens Valley goalkeeper was able to get to it and keep it safe in their arms. Another corner for Stirling Districts saw a strike at goal just go over the crossbar. Stirling Districts appeared to pick up the pace once again keeping the Torrens Valley goalkeeper busy. Another long ball forward for Torrens Valley saw the Stirling Districts keeper come out of the box to intercept the ball, the Torrens Valley forward came in quick to beat the keeper and score. Stirling Districts were quick to reply with some great passing through midfield to get the ball forward and found the back of the net. The Torrens Valley players were finding it hard to get through the midfield but when they did the Torrens Valley forward pounced and took a good strike at goal that went wide. Another opportunity for Torrens Valley came from a corner with the goalkeeper scrambling between the players to get a hold of the ball. Some more strong skills and play in the Stirling Districts midfield got the ball through with a strong strike into the goals getting them ahead. A late goal from Stirling Districts who managed to beat a fast Torrens Valley defence cemented their win.
