Woodside Warriors Soccer Club Red vs Bridgewater Soccer Club White

The Weather is starting to warm up and after a week off we had a very eager and excited little team - ready to hit the pitch, refreshed and raring to go.
The first half started off well with ball movement flowing into a ruthless Bridgewater defence. Eventually breaking through with one of our new recruits Eddie sending one flying past the keeper.
The Warriors all working well together kept the Bridgewater defence under extreme pressure Archer, Freddy and another new recruit Clancy were providing plenty of good runs, busting through and ensuring we had plenty of movement in attack.

In the second half the persistent defence of Bridgewater finally let up and allowed Adam and Mitchell to hit the score board. With some good positioning and hard running Odin and Eddie (Bowman) were showcasing skill and ball movement throughout the midfield splitting the solid defence. Both of our goalies Leon and Clancy were unstoppable and completely shut out anything that came their way.

Hahndorf Soccer Club vs Mount Barker United Soccer Club Blue

A beautiful clear winter morning greeted the U8s as they arrived for an early home game against Mt Barker United Blue at Hahndorf.

Miles Hennessey, Harris Parkyn, Michael Griggs and Hamish Glynn had the Mt Barker defence under extreme pressure right from the first whistle. Hennessy made several runs down the right side, only to have his shots denied by a very stout Mt Barker keeper. Parkyn opened up the Mt Barker defence with an excellent through ball to Griggs, who was unfortunately denied by a great save again by the Mount Barker keeper. Eventually the constant pressure was too much for Mt Barker, and the goals came for the hard working Hahndorf forwards. Any forays made by Mt Barker into their forward line were repelled by a strong Hahndorf defence of Scout Ramsay, Kealan Atkinson and Eric Jager. Sam Gardener also made some key saves while spending time in goals.

An excellent outing by a group of enthusiastic young players who continue to improve week on week!

Round 11                                 Mount Barker Gold verse Woodside

It was Mount Barkers home game, but it was being played at Woodside (I’m as confused as you don’t worry)

The sun was out with a balmy 17 degrees forecast, which made for a nice welcome back after the brake over the holidays. Being the last weekend of the holidays some kids were still away on family holidays, so for the first time this season we were needing help from the u8 side.

We placed 8 on the pitch with no subs available and Mount Barker had one in the bank for the tiered legs.  It was going to be a hard fort game it felt with some holiday rust to shake out.

First half was a battle one end to the other constant pressure being applied by the MB team and every time Woodside managed to get possession in the contested ball, we would boot it forward, but no one was there to pass it too so back it would come. Goalie did well to save at least 3 attempts on goal and keep the scores level at half time 0/0 .

Second half a couple of changes of position and some players listening well to their coach and holding position. It came down to an indirect kick out of the box and bang we were 1 up early in the second half, then Woodside got that rush of adrenalin and lifted to a new gear of soccer playing harder and faster. The u8s were turning out to be great little players and really not looking out of place in our team. Forward pressure was firmly in the Barkers nest and that is the way Woodside liked it .

Some great passes were happening and making it very hard for barker to get a clear run, bang Woodside scored again we were now 2 up and looking proud of what we had accomplished.

The game pressed on and minutes fell away with about a minute left in the game barker struck back and it now only had a goal in it. Everyone’s nerves were on there sleeves .

Finally the whistle and Woodside finished victors. 2/1

U10

Woodside Warriors Soccer Club Blue vs Mount Barker United Soccer Club Red

There are times when, despite having good intentions and the best laid plans, you take a bit of a pasting. No doubt this thought occurred to the coach of the Norway team the other week when, despite being ranked 11th in the world by FIFA and only three places below their opponents, they were on the bad end of an 8-0 thrashing by England’s indomitable Lionesses. So it was too with our U10 Blue team this week who took a bit of a beating from Mt Barker United U10 Red, and by the final whilst heads were down, legs had given out and there were a few wobbly bottom lips, and this was just from the coaching staff.

Even on our darkest days there remains a good reason for optimism once we have retreated to our corners and licked our wounds. And the positives that can be taken from this game came in the form of the hitherto unmentioned first half. Indeed, a few minutes before the half time whistle Woodside had just scored after a 100kmh counter attacking run by this week’s Captain Tyler Berwick, which capped a period of dominance and brought Woodside to within a couple of goals of Barker, giving every reason to believe that the game was set-up for a competitive second half. Prior to that goal, Woodside had a five-minute spell where they ran the game, with Forward Evany Nunn giving a glimpse of her future as a midfield dynamo by dropping deep and putting in a huge amount of work to close down the Barker midfield and win the ball. Signs that Woodside would find the net first came around the fifteen-minute mark, when forward Charlotte Cosgriff was just a whisker away from taking advantage of a through pass that would have seen her one-on-one with the keeper. Even then, in the fifteen-minute period between United’s early opener and their second goal, Woodside were impenetrable in defence with Charlie Hartas making life very difficult for the United forwards through good marking and pressure, and Theo Nicholson having a real beauty of a game in goal, coming off his line like a professional keeper and shutting out almost everything Barker could throw at him.

Admittedly, getting a result against one of the strongest teams in the division was always going to be a bit of a challenge, but the Blues have given a good account of themselves on the two previous outings this season and the scorelines have been respectable. This time around was a bit more painful, but we will get back up and have another go on Friday night in the same place against the Mt Barker United Blue team. Our last meeting was a very close affair and we are hoping the Blues can dust themselves off and make life hard for their opposition once again.

Hahndorf Soccer Club vs Stirling Districts Soccer Club White

It was a nice winter’s day for soccer at Hahndorf’s home ground between Hahndorf and Stirling Districts White. In a hard fought first half neither team managed to get a score on the board. Thomas Gould was great in defence helping Ashon Broadbent-Shaw as goalie. Both saved a couple of shots on goal by Stirling. The centres and forwards for Hahndorf kept applying the pressure to Stirling’s defence throughout the first half unfortunately for no reward. Once the second half started both teams made it clear they were there to get a score on the board. Stirling prevailed first with a nice play despite great attempts by Hahndorf’s defence. Once the ball went back to the centre it was clear that Hahndorf was not going to give up. There were a couple of shots on goal by both Ashon and Hugo Curtis with Hugo’s attempt late in the second half finding the back of the net to equalise. It was good to see some great passing and teamwork amongst Hahndorf. Every game the team looks stronger and stronger, and we look forward to watching their next game.

Hahndorf Soccer Club (1) vs Stirling Districts Soccer Club (3)

Hahndorf took on Stirling Districts at home grounds this afternoon for what was a fair and well fought match. Starting with Joel Bateman and Jensen Ingram in the attack, supported by Emlyn Gilroy, Chris Haynes and Samuel Whitehead in midfield, Hahndorf kept the pressure on Stirling right to the end. With keeper Thomas Stapleton in goals, supported by Lawson Shotton, Cooper Newman and Louis Moran in defence, Hahndorf were kept equally on their toes fending off a deft offence from their eager opponents. Though keeper Stapleton impressed many times over with a marked skill in deflecting Stirlings fire, a couple of unlucky slips gave Districts the upper hand in the games first half.  The Magpies corralled to the fight in the second half, with man-of-the-match Bateman landing a shot in goals and providing his team mates an appreciative boost in morale. With the animal spirits now wide awake, the game dialled up a notch and Hahndorf were able to present some of the skills of its longer standing players with some well calculated passing between Gilroy, Haines and Shotten and some fancy footwork by the talented Ingram. Though this was impressive to see, it wasn't quite enough to deliver the Magpies the result they'd hoped for with Stirling taking it away with a 3-1 win. Overall, a fair match and good result considering the lads return from school holidays.

U13

Woodside Warriors Soccer Club Red (4) vs Murray Bridge United Soccer Club Gold (1)

After a week off for school holidays, we were back to it this week for some more fun in the sun as a persistently dry winter produced another downright pleasant morning for Hills junior football. After a late scheduling change, Murray Bridge United Gold hosted Woodside Warriors Red in the early game at Beatty Terrace.

The last time these two teams met they produced a tantalisingly tight encounter that could have gone either way. This time Woodside managed a more convincing result against a slightly undermanned home side who were unable to field any substitute players.

From the outset, Woodside appeared slightly stronger and in the early stages generated repeated attacking forays. But these were met by resolute defense that was thoroughly committed and equal to the challenge. Each passage of Woodside’s forward play was met by a sea of Yellow that robbed the visitors of time and space, and so prevented clean shots. Woodside did manage to squeeze a few half-shots into the six-yard-box, but these were easily saved and sent back into the midfield. But Woodside did mange an early goal in the first half, from a lovely individual run down the right and a powerful finish. This was half-saved by a desperate keeper, but ultimately the ball forced its way through his arms and a goal was recorded for the visitors.

At times in the first half Bridge won the battle in the middle of the ground and looked likely to surge forward, but the Woodside back-four was all-but impenetrable. Not only did they demonstrate individual class to jockey and rob their opponents of the leather, but they also combined to perfection, covering one-another when beaten and seamlessly folding into the danger zone to snuff out the embers of trouble before anyone else had even smelled the smoke – The beautiful game can be played with beauty even when the opposition has the ball! When half-time came all players sought sanctuary from the surprisingly toasty July sun and got themselves hydrated for another 35 minutes of mayhem.

On the back of sustained defensive effort from the young Warriors, United was kept under relentless pressure again in the second half. And when sufficient pressure is applied, even strongest oak must crack. Another surging run down the right yielded another goal for Woodside early in proceedings. This one was a demonstration of individual class from the right wing, but as is so often the case the goal was deeply rooted in the unsung heroes of the backline. With the game still within reach, Murray Bridge still refused to yield and created several strong chances that had to be saved by a strong, clean set of gloves. But with no fresh legs to replace the weary, things started opening up in front of United’s nest and multiple shots were created by Woodside. With the weary still refusing to capitulate, none of these shots were hit with time and few were hit cleanly, and it wasn’t until a pin-point cross from the right wing hit the striker in a small pocket of clear air that Woodside goaled again. A single touch to steady and an accurate right boot stretched the bottom corner of the onion bag and put the game beyond doubt. This gave opportunity for Woodside’s keeper to swap out to striker where he demonstrated his abilities at both ends of the ground by driving a final nail into the coffin and sealing the affair.

Bridge Gold are a well-coached unit, playing good, tough football with impeccable sportsmanship that was enjoyed by a similarly well-mannered Woodside Warriors U13 Red. Congratulations to both sides on a great day of Hills junior football.

Woodside Warriors Soccer Club Blue (6) vs Blackwood Forest Soccer Club (1)

Woodside’s U17 Blue team headed to the Summit for this week’s match against Blackwood.  With school holidays just coming to a close and a number of players still on holidays they were heading out under-manned with just nine of their own players, plus one filling in from the U15’s.  However, Blackwood was in a similar situation with just ten players for the match as well.

For a mid-winter game the sun was surprisingly bright and conditions were ideal for a great game of football.

With the coach also on holidays players were taking instruction from the team manager for this match – initial guidance was to control the ball, find the passes and conserve energy… it would be a long game for them!

Both teams started well, with the ball moving smoothly on the Summit’s artificial pitch.  It was Woodside that made the first break-through with a goal at the 10 minute mark of the game.  This was followed shortly after by a second from a good strike from the Woodside forward.

At this point Blackwood’s defenders stepped it up a level and put the pressure back onto Woodside, making some excellent intercepts and keeping the pressure on the strikers, which led to multiple missed opportunities.  Blackwood also had opportunities of their own during the half that kept the Woodside keeper in the game and under pressure, but he ultimately kept a clean sheet for the half.  By half time all players were in need of a break!  Score was 2-0.

Heading out for the second half, tired legs were starting to show, with some loose play, however a couple of minutes in saw a third goal for Woodside with a long shot from the left mid-fielder. A surprise goal when the ball flew just under the cross bar, straight through the net and bounced outside of the goal, which had everyone questioning what they had seen.

As the game went on, legs were tired on both teams.  Woodside added a couple more to their tally and Blackwood also scored a well-deserved goal making the most of Woodside’s defender being out of position and an excellent run from their attackers.

Overall a great, but tiring game of football for all players.  Woodside’s team manager was pleased with the independent leadership the players demonstrated for this match; supporting and encouraging each other throughout the game. Well done team!

Stirling Districts Soccer Club (3) vs Torrens Valley Soccer Club Warriors (1)

On what felt like an early spring day the teams lined up in bright sunshine in a top of the table clash. Early running saw neither side with a clear advantage however that was soon to change with Ruby Tully making some threatening solo runs through the Torrens Warriors defence. It was on just such a run that Ruby netted to give Stirling the early lead. Stirling continued to have the better of the game and soon after, in another fast-paced foray, Auriana Healy scored Stirling’s second.  There after the game settled into a more even contest, and then Torrens Warriors got one back to fire their enthusiasm and really up the ante. Half time arrived with the score still 2-1 in Stirling’s favour.

The second half saw the faster pace continue, however some good defence and keeping from Torrens Warriors saw most of the second half scoreless. That said Stirling has several good chances with penetrating runs down the lines from Zora Huang and Maizy Kaines as well as some typically mercurial attacks through the centre from Jess Verryt. Then with around ten minutes remaining En Ueda cracked the code to net Stirling’s third goal and put the result beyond doubt. The final whistle blew with the score unchanged after another hard fought and entertaining matchup.
