Hahndorf Soccer Club vs Stirling Districts Soccer Club

A freezing and drizzly morning set the scene for Hahndorf's 9s Round 12 match against Stirling Districts. Due to the weather there was a last minute change for the game to be played at the Bradwood Park Futsal pitch. The first half commenced with both teams battling the ball in the middle of the pitch. Oliver Knight was in the thick of the action showing strong defence and great throw ins. Thomas Gould showed his skills kicking the ball down the field close to Handorf's goals but this was quickly counteracted by Stirling with the ball back soaring close to Stirling's goal. Soren Mickan in goals did a great save to stop one attempt, closely followed by Mason Saywell kicking the ball clear of the goals. The match continued to be tight, both teams fighting for a goal. Hugo Curtis's superb play brought the ball away from the Stirling players allowing Gould to convert a successful shot at goal for Hahndorf. Within a minute Stirling narrowly missed a goal attempt thanks to a great save from Mickan. It was not long before the end of the 1st half that Stirling scored their first goal also.

In the second half Hahndorf came out with strong attacking play from both Joshua Blain and Owen Hoyle. Saywell in goals was unphased by the persistence of the Stirling
team calmly saving 2 goal attempts in quick succession. Levi Neumann and Rowan Gilroy were an integral part of Hahndorf's continual strong play that led to the team scoring their second goal by Gould. The atmosphere was tense as the second half drew to a close, both teams continually defending and attacking well, it was still anyone's game. It was not long before Stirling's persistence paid off and they scored their second goal for the match. Overall, it was a good even match between both teams which
was reflected in the final score of 2-2. Well played Hahndorf and Stirling Districts!

Woodside Warriors Soccer Club Blue vs Strathalbyn Strikers FC Inc White

Woodside Warriors U9 Blue vs Strathalbyn Soccer Club U9 White

The round 3 trip to Strathalbyn White was not a fruitful one for the Warriors, with Strath having some very strong players who were more than a match for the Blues defence. Nevertheless, the Euro 2020 round of sixteen threw up some surprises this week with underdogs Switzerland putting out World Champions France, The Czech Republic ending the Oranjes’ hopes of repeating their 1988 triumph, and even England managing to fluke a result against a German team that is going through a period of renewal. So, there was always hope that Woodside could raise their game and cause an upset here.

Both teams started the first half quite tentatively, testing each other but not creating an awful lot. Once the game settled a little Strath started to push and found a breakthrough. Woodside went looking for a reply and created a few good chances, with midfielder Jock Mills pushing up and getting amongst the action in front of the Strath goal, and midfielder Tommy Garden showing a big improvement in his awareness of the game around him, contributing to some nice passing movements. Sadly for Woodside their first-half efforts went unrewarded, and despite some confident goalkeeping from Lachlan Mitchell, Strath turned the screw again leaving Woodside with an awful lot to do in the second half.

Woodside were very much on the back foot in the second half but despite the pressure Captain Sam Balacco made some crucial interventions to slow Strath progress, as did Austin Levy dropping back from midfield. This was always going to be a tough game and Woodside needed to sit deep and hit Strath on the break to get anywhere, but the Warriors end-of-school-term legs were tired and Strath quickly managed to put the game out of reach, despite Lucas March-Feltham playing the sweeper role very well to frustrate the Strath forwards.

Thanks to Lui for refereeing today. The Warriors have a break for a week and then another challenging game coming up against Hahndorf in a fortnight, so another opportunity to learn about sitting deep, soaking up pressure and hitting the opposition on the break.

Woodside Warriors Soccer Club Red vs Strathalbyn Strikers FC Inc Red

Under 9 Teams Woodside Warriors Soccer Club (WWSC) Red played against Strathalbyn Red on Saturday 3rd July. Both teams met on the home grounds of the Woodside Warriors, with particularly cold and wintry conditions. The rain held off, though the clouds looked threatening at different times. The WWSC Reds were not perturbed by the possible rain peril and held up a strong position of both offence and defence throughout the game. We had successful offence team work from team members, Bastian French, Elliot Stuart, Quinn Klein, Josiah Ambrose and Justin Smith at different times. Following suit with a first-time crack of triumph to Samuel Clifford and sensational goals from Quinn Klein, Bastian French, Justin Smith and Elliot Stewart. On-going team defence efforts supporting the goalies who were ready to stop any ball that came their way by Joshua Clifford (1st half of game) and Logan Bridge (2nd half of game). Many flourishing and animating labours, not to mention developing team passing and encouraging words were shared between the team members. Our Under 9s were thrilled with the outcome of their team achievement.

Torrens Valley Soccer Club vs Mount Barker United Soccer Club Red

The U10 Mt Barker United Red side travelled to Birdwood Park to meet the Torrens Valley team. The teams played 7-aside on a very cold and wet day.

Mt Barker started strong early on in the first half, with a goal within the first few minutes of the game. Torrens Valley worked hard to get the ball up and had a couple of chances at goal themselves. Another fantastic goal came from Mt Barker with the strike being swept up high over the goal keepers head and into the back of the net. The play continued in front of Mt Barker’s goals and a back pass to the keeper rolled in for an own goal from a Torrens Valley player. Torrens didn’t let that get them down and had a good run up towards the goal with an attempt on goal going wide. Another good run up the pitch and strike at goal from Torrens Valley went wide. Soon after the ball hit the back of the net for Torrens Valley with a goal being scoredd for them. The pressure was kept up from Torrens Valley with another attempt at goal saved by the keeper. A great tackle from Torrens in the midfield saw the ball taken from Mt Barker and a quick run and strike with the ball hitting the side netting. Mt Barker had one final attack at goal and scoring before the half time whistle blew.

The second half started slow as a bit of rain had set in and the players were feeling the cold. Mt Barker kept the ball and were having the majority of the possession, some great play and passing between them was keeping the ball in front of goals with the Torrens Valley defence struggling to keep it out. Torrens Valley were successful in winning the ball and another quick run up the pitch ensued which went out for a throw-in. Both teams struggled to get the ball through the midfield with quite a few throw-ins. After some time in midfield Mt Barker got the ball down in front of goal and scored once again. One last run from Torrens saw the ball go over the back line for a goal kick. Well done to both teams on such a cold morning!

Hahndorf Soccer Club vs Mount Barker United Soccer Club Blue

Another cold, and wet day saw an exciting and well balanced tussle between Hahndorf and Mount Barker Blue, at Hahndorf’s home ground on Pine Ave. Both teams had an even share of the ball throughout the match, with defenders and attackers on both sides showing great teamwork and courage. A fitting final result of a one all draw, after a brilliant Mount Barker goal in the first half was matched by an exciting last few minutes goal by Hahndorf.

Woodside Warriors Soccer Club vs Mount Barker United Soccer Club Gold

The pitch was heavy under foot, the air cold and the sky grey and bleak but both teams were full of energy as they contested this Saturday's U10s game Warriors v Mt Barker Gold.  Play was fast, furious and tight in the first half but defence was miserly for both sides with depserate saves in both goals.  Warriors' attack hit their rhythm in the second half while Mt Barker defended valiantly demonstrating increased strength as the season progresses.  Yet another exciting game played in great spirits.

U12

Woodside Warriors Soccer Club (4) vs Murray Bridge United Soccer Club Gold (1)

After juggling the fixtures to get everyone out on the pitch Murray Bridge U12 Gold hosted Woodside Warriors under sunny-cloudy-windy-wet-sunny… skies for a Round 12 Battle Royale. It was the second time that these two teams have faced off, and after the epic Fight Back At The Fortress of Round 7 the atmosphere was thicker than Wimbledon’s famous clotted cream. But if the youngsters were feeling the pressure, they didn’t let it show. It was all smiles and laughter before the match and steely eyed focus when the whistle was blown and white-line-fever took over.

Woodside started strongly, constructing several well-devised attacking raids and setting camp deep in enemy territory for extended periods of time. But each raid was well-thwarted by a very structured and disciplined Bridge Backline who jockeyed well, claimed possession and cleared without flaw for nearly fifteen minutes. This enable them to hack the ball long, behind the Woodside line, to threaten at the other end. But Woodside too looked organised in defense – Each long-ball was mopped up with the efficiency of a Gringotts goblin, steered wide and cleared to a team-mate in a better position. With both sides defending so well, this was going to be a tight and enthralling contest. It was Woodside who cracked first – On the 10-minute mark, Murray Bridge attacked down the right. Woodside stepped forward to challenge and deny safe passage. This stalled the raid and Red and Blue shirts flooded back to fill the space, but Bridge pushed on, finding a chink in the armor to penetrate into the corner and force a cross into traffic. Woodside looked to have it covered but a beautifully timed right-foot shot was threaded through the eye-of-the-needle to evade the unsighted keeper – very nice!

Bridge were elated, the Warriors unphased. A very proud Woodside coach watched on as his chargers did their thing – they responded – something unwanted had happened, it was bad and uncomfortable, but what mattered now was what they did next! Within a minute they had hit back by lifting their focus, increasing their pressure on the ball and working for their mates. These efforts combined to yield a deft pass to space, a great run down the right, a push behind the line, a touch to steady and a drive past the keeper – lovely!

From the ensuing kick-off Woodside managed to reclaim possession, control the ball and score again. This time, their left forward found a sliver of space within range to score his first goal off his unfavored left foot.

Having taken and then lost the lead in such short time, Bridge to took a moment to settle, but they did, gaining composure to reaffirm their solidity through the back-four. This kept Woodside at bay, and when Bridge won the ball, they sent it long to create pressure in their attacking half. But Woodside was gradually becoming the dominant force, creating 18 shots on goal for the match to Murray Bridge’s five. Two more of these found their mark. The first, before the break, through individual determination and composure in front of goal. The second, after the break, through teamwork, structured attacking and clean passing.

Woodside’s front three played fantastically and earnt their accolades for putting the ball in the net, their midfield was disciplined in attack and phenomenal in cover defense and their back four were resolute – they met their opponents when needed, they dropped at the necessary moment to deny Bridge any clean ball behind the line and they cleared with lucid purpose.  Team-effort was required to overcome Bridge today, and the young Warriors from up the Hill delivered in spades. This was a great contest, played in the spirit of joy and fair play and enjoyed by all.

U13 Div 2

Hahndorf Soccer Club White (9) vs Murray Bridge United Soccer Club (3)

It was a muddy pitch and a cold day.  Both teams came out with determination to get the ball.   After 6 minutes Hayden Lien scored his first goal.  The ball spent a lot of time in the air, going back and forth to each side.  Some great teamwork and passing gave the set up for Harry Gould to score his 1st goal.  Murray Bridge had an opportunity to score their first goal, unfortunately it went to the left of the goal post. With some determination though, Murray Bridge scored their first goal. A rough tackle saw Hahndorf get their third goal from a penalty by Hayden Lien.  Hahndorf kept the pressure on and Lien scored his goal.  An unfortunate handball gave Murray Bridge a penalty giving them their second goal.  Just before half time Lien managed to score his fourth goal.

In the second half again, the ball spent a lot of time in the air.  With in 4 minutes though Lien had managed to score another goal. Both teams had some great defence, which saw the ball going to both halves of the pitch. A great corner by Gould saw another goal for Hahndorf.  Soon after Gould made another goal. Quickly followed by another goal to Lien.  Then Murray Bridge managed to get by Hahndorf’s defence to score the last goal of the game

Woodside Warriors Soccer Club Red (7*) vs Woodside Warriors Soccer Club Blue (1)

It was Warriors versus Warriors today on the main pitch at Woodside Warriors Soccer Club. Before the game, all players were friends but when the whistle went, and the match started that’s when it got serious. Both teams out and hungry for the win. Play seemed even in the beginning as both teams tried to work their opponents out. Warriors Red were quick to score the first 2 goals at the 6- and 9-minute mark. Warriors Blue lifted and stopped Reds run at goal by scoring their first goal at the 13-minute mark. Both teams were hungry for the ball and the competition was tough from both sides. Blue kept pushing through but Red’s goalie was not letting them score and deflected every shot that was taken at goal. Red stepped up and meshed as a team and went full steam ahead shooting another 4 goals leaving half time score at 6-1 Reds way. After the break Blue came out hard and fast and shut down Reds attempts at scoring. Seems they were at a deadlock with no score on the board for the first 13 minutes of the second half. Then Red ran away with it scoring another 4 goals in the second half leaving final sore at Red 10 – Blue 1. By no means does the score reflect on the way Warriors Blue played. They applied pressure when it was needed and certainly made Warrior Red work for the win. Was a great game to watch. Well done to both Warriors teams on a great game and great sportsmanship.

Blackwood Forest Soccer Club (2) vs Torrens Valley Soccer Club (4)

Blackwood Forest hosted Torrens Valley Soccer Club at their home ground of Springbank Secondary College at 10.00am on cool, overcast morning.

The first half of the match was most energetic, with the ball travelling from one end of the pitch to the other frequently, most commonly from unconverted opportunities. Ben A opened the match scoring for the Blackwood Team, picking up a loose ball at the 4 minute mark. Torrens Valley were unlucky to score before Cooper M’s goal at 39 minutes having had many attempts on goal that were either thwarted by the safe hands of Blackwood Keeper Austin N, or were off target by the smallest of margins. Blackwood were also unable to find the net again and at half time the teams were one all.

Blackwood’s Ben A looked to start the second half as he had begun the first with an early shot. This one was saved by the Torrens Valley Keeper. As in the first, Torrens Valley took the ball straight into their offensive half and their responding shot on goal just wide. Another attempt followed within minutes from a corner kick, just high of their target. A moment later Torrens Valley’s Harrison P added to their score, capitalising on the Blackwood Keeper moving out of goal a little too early. Hungry to increase their one goal lead, Torrens Valley had a further 2 attempts within 3 minutes, their first attempt wide and their second saved. Blackwood’s attempts to equalise were denied by the Torrens Valley Keeper, including a flurry of 3 consecutive attempts to find the net. In the back and forth play that continued, Torrens Valley’s Cooper M and Harrison P succeeded to score again, as did Blackwood’s Ben A giving each of the game scorers 2 goals apiece.

Final score Blackwood 2: Torrens Valley 4

Woodside Warriors Soccer Club Blue (6) vs Stirling Districts Soccer Club Blue (2)

After another wet week, this week’s game between Stirling Districts Blue and Woodside Blue was moved to Strathalbyn.

With conditions fine and the sun out, the game began on time. Woodside welcomed a new player to its lineup this week who offered to wear the gloves and we thank him for his efforts. For the first 20 minutes both teams worked hard to get the ball into attack but the defense held strong. While Woodside had more opportunities Stirling’s small defense repelled them each time. Woodside finally opened their scoring when their right midfielder managed to get a toe on the ball and beat the diving keeper in a scrappy contest. Both teams lifted their intensity but Woodside’s ball movement was the slicker and they kept finding opportunities out wide but Districts denied shots on goal. Woodside scored again when they applied pressure to Stirling’s goal kick that failed to leave the penalty box and their left winger put the goal in the back of the net for a 2:0 lead, which is how the score was at the half time break.

The second half saw Woodside play into a wind, giving their opponents the opportunity to use it to their advantage. It was however the ball play of Woodside that got the early goal in the second half again from its right midfielder. Stirling Districts were not to be denied and with a great run by their left winger, managed a shot on goal that passed between the keeper and near post and gave them some hope. Woodside’s forwards found the extra gear they needed and replied quickly to again give themselves a two goal buffer. Stirling having scored once were looking for their second and, with long balls out of defense, were running at the Woodside’s defense and moving the ball to create opportunities. When Woodside’s center back was out of position, they managed to get their chance and scored their second for the game. Woodside tightened up across the board and their center forward scored his second for the game. Stirling were not to be denied but a great save by the Woodside keeper at the front post pushing it over the bar denied Stirling from what was a great strike. With little time left, Woodside went on attack and with their speedy forward powering past Stirling’s defense, he took his time and scored his second for the game. When the whistle sounded Woodside again took home the points but they did not have the game their own way and Stirling should be commended for their efforts.

Woodside Warriors Soccer Club Red (4) vs Strathalbyn Strikers FC Inc (1)

Once again, our Woodside Red's gave us freezing, rugged up, social distanced spectators a great game to watch.

They were off to a flying start with two early attempts at goals that unfortunately Strathalbyn were able to stop, However it didn't take long before Harry scored the first goal of the game. Ryan wasn't too far behind scoring the second goal, ending the first half of the match 2-0.

James, who was goal keeper though out the whole game did an outstanding job as always stopping several attempts and his kick out from goals were as always impressive.

We defiantly kept their goalie busy, With Cohenn at one point having a dominant dribble down the field, only just missing with his attempt hitting the goal post.

Riley had great control and Lysiane had some great kicks.

The second half seen the ball down our end a little more with the result of Strath scoring their first goal.  Our defence was really strong, making this the only goal they scored.

Bradley also played a great game with some great touches.

Ryan and Harry worked together upfront to score our third goal, which had all us spectaors screaming with excitement.

Not long after Ryan, who was on fire today scored the 4th and final goal.

Overall, the Woodside team played together beautifully and should be really proud of their effort and how they played as a team with winning the game, 4-1 as a great bonus.

U17

Woodside Warriors Soccer Club (6*) vs Rangers Junior Soccer Club (0)

The association’s limited pool of six U17 teams makes for some interesting match-ups on occasion. When the head or tail two of the ladder play each other the results can be exciting, but when a higher placed team plays a lower placed team it can be everything but. This is the case across most age groups and even across most sports.

Divisions would solve the discrepancy, but even if the likes of Stirling Districts or Mount Barker United managed to field an U17 team each there still wouldn’t be enough for two divisions. There would need to be 12 teams for that to happen and we’re a long way from that level.

On Saturday the Woodside Warriors U17 took to their pitch welcoming Ashton Rangers for their third of four encounters this season. This was the first game on Woodside soil. The previous two games saw results of 3-1 and 6-0 in favour of the Warriors. Naturally all money was on the home team to win, but expectations were on Woodside to do it nicely and to maintain respect of both opponents and supporters.

The game kicked off under the eye of referee, Sam Gray. The AHRB took the opportunity to treat the game as a safe ground for a couple of assistant referees (lines people) to gain some experience. Meanwhile the team’s in-house linesmen relished at the chance to watch the game instead. In addition to that, spectators were treated to a ceremonial start.

Rangers provided competition from kick-off whilst Woodside were traditionally late to the party, something that they’re unlikely to fix before the end of the season. HAYDEN DAVIS and ISAIAH HAMMAT started on and up front, whilst TOBY VINCENT kept the bench warm.

Once the team had warmed up JETT TONKIN opened Woodside’s scoreline on the 19th minute. A second goal from JAMES RENSHAW two minutes later, managing to clear two defenders in the process, simply built on momentum.

The 23rd minute saw Woodside’s keeper, SAMUEL HERMAN, take a penalty after an unfortunate handball by Rangers. Herman has been relocated to the outfield whilst mending a busted thumb. This game marked his last before he returns to goals for the next game. Herman scored, marking Woodside’s third goal in four minutes of play.

Tonkin continued his run, scoring on the 31st minute. A shot on target into the gloves of Rangers’ keeper prevented Renshaw from adding a second goal to his tally. On the 41st minute CASEY GODFREY scored from a penalty, again after an unfortunate handball from Rangers. A couple more shots from Tonkin, both on and off target, saw out the first half.

By half time Woodside were five goals in the lead. The home team made few changes, keeping JOSH VASSOS, ASHER HAMMAT and Godfrey in defense. Meanwhile keeper ANGUS WILKINS traded places with IZEYAH RAYMOND for the second half, hopefully the last time either need to keep this season.

The second half saw a strong and expected performance by LACHLAN MOWBRAY who pocketed himself a hat trick. Tonkin completed his hat trick with  an awkward strike and deflection by Rangers’ keeper. Unfortunately the ball went back into the path of Tonkin who only needed to tap it into goals. Godfrey added his second goal, a bootless belly bounce into the goal.

Goal of the day had to be by Captain Wilkins, who was in full control of two consecutive plays and long strikes at goal. The first long range attempt reflected off the post and into the away team. Determined to see if he could score from distance Wilkins took possession of the ball and took a shot from within a meter or two of the center circle, clearing the Ranger’s keeper.

The second half ended with six goals in favour of the home team, and a final win of 6-0 overall.

“Despite the result it was a difficult game to play”, said Coach BRUCE TONKIN after the game. “This is the highest age group we can play in. Most of these kids are mere games away from playing Senior football. Should the six goal mercy rule be in place at this level? Should Woodside be expected to limit our attack? Is it considered disrespectful to them if we do? I know that Woodside wouldn’t be happy if any opposition held back and we’ve been on the wrong end of strong opposition teams for years.”

Quality performances by the two girls on the Rangers’ team should give them confidence to at least trial for the AHJFA 2022 U16G Rep Team, should they be of the right age of course. Their relentless energy and positivity on the pitch certainly helped keep their team focused on the end game – to simply enjoy playing.

Woodside’s best player went to CASEY GODFREY. Godfrey has been instrumental in a number of games throughout the season and played a key role in this one. ANGUS WILKINS had a notable performance too. As Captain he leads by example with both elegance and grace, easily deserving of the title. Rounding off the list is JETT TONKIN. His hat trick was a treat.

Rangers’ next game will be a challenge against third placed Murray Bridge at Beatty Terrace in a fortnight. Woodside, anticipating severely low numbers due to school holidays, is expected to postpone their encounter against Strathalbyn.

Stirling United Soccer Club (2) vs Murray Bridge United Soccer Club (4)

With Heathfield still unavailable, Murray Bridge hosted a twilight fixture late on Saturday afternoon between Stirling United and Murray Bridge U17. The previous matches between the two teams had been split, so expectations were high for a very competitive match. Murray Bridge came into the game having won 4 of their past 5 games, while Stirling were very competitive in previous outings with some mid season additions to their squad following a number of injuries to key players.

Early on, it was clear that Stirling were on song, with runs down either wing from Ky Henry and Toby Leigh respectively leading to great chances that were either saved by the shot stopping prowess of Jayden Vokes or shots missing the target.

Murray Bridge were always a threat on the counter, but Stirling were clearly on top throughout most  of the first half, missing numerous golden chances before Araby Phelan finally gave them the lead after 30 minutes.

With 3 minutes left in the half, Murray Bridge, against the overall run of play, pushed forward and a powerful shot broke through the grasp of Henry Monaghan in goal to level things up leading into half time.

After the break, Stirling continued to hold sway, and took the lead again when a perfectly executed corner from Monaghan found Phelan on the far side and he slammed it home. However from there, Murray Bridge were let back into the game with a couple of defensive errors seeing them somewhat surprisingly take the lead. When Edward Mato found space with less than 10 minutes left, he used his pace to get around the defence and drove the sealer into the back of the net.

Stirling continued to press to try to reduce the advantage, but with Murray Bridge controlling the tempo of the game to the end, they ended up comfortable winners on the scoreboard 4-2, in a game that Stirling were very unlucky not to get some points out of.

Hahndorf Soccer Club (2) vs Strathalbyn Strikers FC Inc (1)

Hahndorf U17 played against Strathalbyn on Friday night.  Hahndorf came out strong from the get go, with Xavier Kell taking a shot at goals in the first 30 seconds.  The game settled, and it was evenly matched, although Hahndorf had more shots and opportunities at goal.  At the 30 minute mark, a cross from Matt Daly to Kell in front of Strathalbyn’s goal, enabled Kell to punch the ball into the back of the net for the first goal of the match.  This fired up Strathalbyn, who quickly responded with their own goal only minutes later.  At the half time whistle the score was 1-1.

Hahndorf once again came out fighting for the second half, and applied a lot of pressure on the Strathalbyn defence.  It was just a matter of time before Hahndorf were able to get a running break that saw Kell once again sink the ball into the net for Hahndorf’s 2nd goal.  Although Strathalbyn played hard till the end, they weren’t able to increase their score. Hahndorf won convincingly.

U17G

Woodside Warriors Soccer Club (1) vs Stirling Districts Soccer Club (7)

The sun shone and a rainbow appeared for the opening of the girls game with Woodside up against Stirling Districts in the U17 girls competition.

Both teams had a strong start to the game.  Stirling Districts scored the first goal of the game with a well-placed pass to the front and a run on that made it a one-on-one with the keeper.  The composed forward placed the ball well; just outside the reach of the Woodside keeper.  It wasn't long before Woodside responded with a goal of their own from a well-placed corner kick that was headed into the back of the net.

The competitve game continued, but the strength of the top of the table Stirling Districts team shone and they managed to slot a few more goals home.  The Woodside girls fought to the end, but were unable to convert a few opportunities of their own.  The final score perhaps didn't reflect the competitive nature of the game.

Congratulations once again to all the girls on a game well played, in fun and good spirit.
