U9

Woodside Warriors Soccer Club Red vs Stirling Districts Soccer Club

An early start for the U9 Woodside Warriors against Stirling District at Aldgate oval with our warmup in the rain. Once the game started the sun came out. Elliot Stewart was the captain for the team and led them on with great communication skills. Carlos our coach was out encouraging the team with their teamwork, footwork, passes and kicking skills.

We had no substitutes, so all players played a full game rotating between attack, mid field and defence. All players put in 100 % and played with grit and determination. The U9s look very strong playing together working as a team. A great game!

Woodside Warriors Soccer Club Blue vs Bridgewater Soccer Club

Playing the same team home and away and two weeks apart lent a slight air of a cup semi-final second leg to this U9s match on Saturday morning. Similar to the teams’ earlier encounter, this proved to be a close game with a tight battle fought mostly in the midfield. Bridgewater showed once again that they are well-organised and can effectively close-down the opposition, whilst being tricky to deal with on the break.

For their part Woodside defended well, created some good goalscoring opportunities and offered tantalising glimpses of a passing game that they hope to develop through the season. The better of the chances once again fell Woodside’s way and your correspondent suspects that both coaches will take a number of positives from the match and some satisfaction from their respective teams’ performances.

Hahndorf Soccer Club vs Mount Barker United Soccer Club Red

The start of the u9s Round 2 match between Hahndorf and Mount Barker United Red was a little interrupted when Mason Saywell was stung by a bee, bravely taking the sting in his stride, he took a few minutes with the ice pack before joining the team on the pitch.

Hahndorf dominated the first part of play with Soren Mickan breaking out for a first shot on goals, quickly followed by Levi Neumann who took a chip shot from behind the pack, sending the ball up and over getting the first goal of the match. Next up saw Thomas Gould have a shot on goal, which was well defended by Mount Barker.

10 mins in after much tussling in the middle, and with heavy rain settling in, Rowan Gilroy, Hugo Curtis, and Joshua Blain were strong protecting the Hahndorf back line. However Mount Barker managed to continue forward and had their first shot at goal, which was saved by Goalkeeper Owen Hoyle.

Hahndorf continued to make efforts on goal. Curtis shot for goal, which was

quickly followed by Mickan shooting a goal, a left foot beauty. The strong attack continued from Gould’s shot on goal, which hit the keeper and rolled through for another goal.

Mount Barker then capitalised on a slip and trip to take a shot on goal, well defended by Hoyle in goals.

Half time saw the rain ease and evenly matched teams tussle with the ball changing ends often. Curtis went in as Goalkeeper for Hahndorf the second half.

Next saw a strong unselfish pass from Mickan to Gould who was clear, who managed to get past a lone Mount Barker player to convert a goal.

A lot of play through the middle, with Saywell, Blain, Neumann and Gilroy, all contributing well, but finally saw Mount Barker break through and take a good shot on goal that only just missed.

Late in the second half, after a throw in by Blain to Neumann, with another chip shot over to Hoyle who had a good clear run and took our last shot on goal that was defended by Mount Barker.

Well matched play and good sportsmanship by both teams today.

U10

Woodside Warriors Soccer Club vs Murray Bridge United Soccer Club

Round 2 saw the U10s play on home ground facing Muray Bridge again.  Murray Bridge started strong scoring the first 2 goals.  Woodside settled in and by half time had celebrated their own 2 goals.  The second half saw good even play with some good passing and further goals.  Both keepers played very well.  Overall good sportsmanship was displayed by all and it was a great game for spectators.  Well done players!

Hahndorf Soccer Club vs Stirling Districts Soccer Club Blue

Under 10

Round two saw a fast paced and evenly matched game between Hahndorf and Stirling Districts Blue at Aldgate Primary School. The first half saw the ball move from end to end as both teams made charges towards their goals only to be thwarted by the oppositions defensive line. Ashon Broadbent-Shaw made his first attempt on goal only for the goalie to show her skills in saving. A long kick by Zack Perkins saw the ball again return to the Hahndorf forward line where Broadbent-Shaw and Lucca Falvo-Lopez worked together for another shot at the goals. Defence was kept busy making it hard for Stirling to take a clear shot on goal. Jhett Frost lifted the ball over the opposition to Lachlan Gardner and Cohen Whinfield who founded the keepers hands again.

Second half saw Sol Cootes join the field and Gardner don the keeper gloves. Cootes soon scored. Frost had a good cross to Whinfield with another shot running wide of the goal. Connor Ozolins was quick along the lines keeping the ball from escaping the pitch and creating a turn over. Cootes, again in front of goal, kicked a beauty that hit the cross bar and was ruled no goal. Simran Singh in midfield passed back to defender Caleb Earley who put the boot in and returned the ball up forward. Falvo-Lopez was fed the ball a number of times in the final minutes but due to the skill of the Stirling goalie none made it to the back of the net.

U11

Woodside Warriors Soccer Club vs Nairne Knights Soccer Club

Woodside Warriors U11 team played extremely well. Despite the colder than expected temperature, and the threat of heavy rain, the kids showed great signs of improvement and team cohesion compared to round 1. Well played kids!

Woodside Warriors Soccer Club (0) vs Stirling Districts Soccer Club Blue (2)

School Holidays are here and a positive vibe was felt accross the players as they embarked on a beautiful pitch out at woodside , a quick shower came accross before the game, just to remind us that it is soccer season, then following this we had a minute silence to honor a lost stirling player in an accident earlier this week. Players hit the pitch running and pressed on the stirling players making the day look promising that it would be a close contest. Close it was it was 28 minutes in and no goal had yet been scored, brilliance from both goalies and hard pressure from both attaching ends was proving that there is a battle to be had. at the half siren, only one goal was scored gifted to stirling by the umpire in a moment of weakness.

it was still anyones game with only one goal that potentially would be overuled at a latter date.

but no early in the second term an accidental handball in the penalty box has brought out the umpire and given stirling a second goal to their tally . from this point on no more were scorfed, but many a chance tried and lost on both ends of the pitch. At no point was presssure dropped off and options given great work by both teams.

Hahndorf Soccer Club (6*) vs Murray Bridge United Soccer Club Blue (0)

Match report Hahndorf U12s vs Murray Bridge United U12
Saturday 10 April 2021

Murray Bridge United U12’s team kicked off uphill at 9.01 on Saturday 10 April, against Hahndorf U12 at Murray Bridge soccer grounds.  Within 6 minutes Centre Forward Hayden Lien scored for Hahndorf.  Levi Beesley and Emlyn Gilroy worked well with Oli Aylen in driving the ball forward toward goals. Cooper Liddle and Harry Gould grabbed opportunities to strike.  Defenders Daniel Peters, Dante Man, Ben Romaldi, and Lawson Shotton kept control of any balls that slipped past the front line.  Goalie Ryder Hill was ready but had little work given Hahndorf’s excellent play.
Five minutes after the first goal, Lien smashed another one past the Murray Bridge keeper.   Jacob Gardiner provided a series of great crosses toward goals.  Chris Haynes was moving the ball strongly up the wing and at 9.27 Gould finished the charge to score his first goal.  Just 3 minutes later, shortly before half time, Lien scored his 3rd goal bringing the score to 4 - 0 Hahndorf’s way.
Shotton kicked off for the 2nd half with Hill out of goals and on an attack.  Hill’s charge was only stopped by strong Murray Bridge Goal keeping.  Gilroy punched his first goal trough at 9.50am and then Gardener headed a ball past the keeper to secure goal number 6.  Patrick Hinze pushed hard in defence and stopped stray balls slipping through.  Gould punched goal 7 through and minutes later Gardner headed the ball which bounced off the defending team’s boot which brought the tally to 8 - 0.
The westerly wind and strong teamwork by Hahndorf kept the ball in the forward, left of the field during the second half.  Beesley was noticeable in helping move the ball toward goals, and Liddle was a capable defender blocking shots that created a secure defence.
At 10.06am Gould sunk the final goal of the match.

Woodside Warriors Soccer Club Red (6*) vs Rangers Junior Soccer Club (0)

Both teams in position on the pitch and ready to go but unfortunately that’s as far as it got. Seems we had no Ref for the game. After a little confusion and hurriedly trying to figure out what was happening, we managed to find a Ref and the game got started 15 minutes late. Now that the match was underway Warriors made quick work of gaining control and had a quick couple attempts at goal but didn’t quite sink them home. After a quick turnover from Morgan Burroughes, Warriors moved the ball towards goal and with great teamwork James Lunnon scored the first goal for the game at the 4-minute mark.  Matisse Mack expertly blocked a Rangers throw in and accurately passed it down the pitch to James who then ran with it. He waited till the very last second to kick it into goal and it paid off with his second goal 2 minutes after his first. At the 7-minute mark Sidney Cotton came out of nowhere to steal the ball, made an incredible run down the pitch with it and finished it off with his first goal for the game. Domenico Silvestri made his presence known when he scored his first goal from a corner kick in. That got the crowd making some noise. Poppy Thomas was once again a force to be reckoned with in defense and did not let anything past her. Jesse Mewett played well in the middle and placed his passes beautifully to his teammates. Sidney kicked his second goal at the 20-minute mark and not wanting to be left out Israel Maxwell and his fast footwork popped one into the net to score a goal only 1 minute later. Warriors again displaying great teamwork with effective passes saw Sidney set the ball up perfectly for Matisse to power through and kick her very first goal just before half time. With the score 9-0 at half time the Warriors decided to switch it up a little. With a few position changes and Rangers coming back out with determination Warriors had to work a little harder to gain control of the ball. The match seemed to go back and forth with both teams working hard to get it to their goal. No Goals were scored by either team for a good portion of the second half. Israel got a hard knock to the ribs and hit the ground. After getting his breath back and a quick assessment he managed to get to his feet and like the Warrior he is he walked himself off the pitch to receive first aid. After losing a team member Warriors found a fire in their belly and went back at it. Eddie Moylan work tirelessly in the middle and made many passes with conviction. Barnaby Bevan came out from goals to have a run and run he did, with possession of the ball he ran all the way to goal, he shot, and he scored his first goal for the match at the 54-minute mark. Rangers got control of the ball and managed to get to their goals. Oliver Boerth stepped up his defense and blocked many attempts at goal one after the other and any that found their way past Oliver, James cleaned up to stop them scoring. A quick kick out by Oliver saw the ball get passed down the pitch to Max Davis waiting in the wing. Fancy footwork saw him get around his opponent  and with a great kick Max scored the last goal for the match. After a slow start to the game, it turned out to be a fast-paced match. It was a great game to watch.

U15

Blackwood Forest Soccer Club (3) vs Stirling Districts Soccer Club Blue (5)

Blackwood Forest's first home game of the season ended in a 5-3 win for the visiting Stirling Blue side in an entertaining clash at Springbank Secondary.

Blackwood began on the attack and with Stirling a player short in the opening minutes the home team opened the scoring with a quick attacking move in the 10th minute ending with a clean strike into the back of the net by Liam Dodd.

Stirling responded immediately with a goal just a minute later as neat build up play ended with a tap in.

The visitors took the lead with a superb long-range strike by former Blackwood player Jacob Kenning for his new team.

Blackwood continued to create chances and levelled the score at 2-2 on the stroke of half time with a flowing passing move creating space for Dodd to fire home his second.

The second half saw Blackwood again creating chances but it was the visitors who took the lead in the 61st minute with another long-range strike to the top corner giving the Forest keeper no chance.

Stirling extended their lead four minutes later with a fast counter attack catching Blackwood's defenders out of position and forcing the goalkeeper off his line leaving the Blue team's striker to calmly roll the ball home.

Blackwood pulled a goal back four minutes later with Austin Newbold slotting home after a good cross from the left wing.

Kenning made sure of the win for the visitors with another powerful shot in the 79th minute bringing the final 5-3 score line.

Blackwood showed significant improvement from the previous game and kept running and creating all morning while Stirling deserve credit for a hard-fought win, running out the full 80 minutes without having a substitute to call on.

Hahndorf Soccer Club (3) vs Stirling Districts Soccer Club White (9)

A late game today on the Hahndorf home ground. Coach Danny told the boys to head out on to the pitch and have fun, and they did.

We had the initial advantage of the slightly sloping pitch heading into our goal end for the first half. Stirling white however got in first with a goal one minute into the game. Henri Bjordal fired back with a goal 5 minutes later.  The game was on!

Tom Boekel was our star goal keeper we stopped many Stirling balls from getting into the net. His skills impressed all.

Our defence game was strong with Konrad Michael, Elwin Aylen, William Whiting, Alexander Romaldi and Ryley Neumann. All played with strength and persistence. No- one wanted Stirling to win. In the second half Ben Romaldi jumped in to provide some fresh energy.

The attack team was Damon Martin, Jacob Neuman, Stefan Panich andToby Perkins. These boys passed, kicked and ran after the ball. This great team work enabled Jacob to get a goal after a beautiful pass from brother Ryley. Jacobs second goal was after assistance from Damon.

All boys played well and should be pleased. Stirling was the winner on the day, but next time boys we want a win.

Mount Barker United Soccer Club (1) vs Woodside Warriors Soccer Club Red (3)

A much more soccer friendly day of showery autumn weather greeted us for round 2, keeping us reaching for our umbrellas for a fierce tight game.

We were fairly evenly matched at half time, with Mt Barker defending strongly, and Woodside having some unlucky misses at goal.... quite a few posts were given a knocking today!

Second half saw Mt Barker sustain an injury, and Woodside were much stronger at getting past the Mount Barker defence and getting the ball in the net. A well fought battle on both sides but congratulations go to Woodside for their win.

U17

Woodside Warriors Soccer Club (3) vs Rangers Junior Soccer Club (1)

Round Two of the AHJFA U17 League saw Ashton Rangers host Woodside Warriors at Ashton.

Over the years Woodside’s opinion of Rangers has developed from pushover, to cursed, to a current and ongoing threat. It was only three or four seasons ago when a match up against them was an easy victory. This eventually lead to a game against them late 2019 where a draw came as a surprise. Subsequently Rangers games were reclassified by Woodside as cursed, far too close to be considered a pushover. In the 2020 season the first encounter was a mere goal difference in favour of Woodside. At that point they were then reclassified as a threat.

The classification was solidified for the current season, after Round One saw titans Stirling United draw against them, a goal a piece. Woodside can only imagine that Rangers would have celebrated, deservingly so. Meanwhile Stirling United would have been shaken up enough to realise the same of Rangers, being that, quite simply, they cannot be underestimated. Their drive is beyond that of most other teams, and not just within this league, but the association as a whole. Credit to them.

Woodside have become accustomed to performing under challenging conditions. With a Round One win over 2020 U16 Champions under their belt preceded by a solid and unexpected second half of the previous season, Woodside were possibly going in as favourites in a game against Rangers. Despite this they were concerned. They’d never beaten Rangers by much and with the potential of a draw in the back of their mind they were nervous.

Second to that they were entering this game with a single substitute available. Both TOBY VINCENT and HAYDEN DAVIS were away, both of whom the team was at a loss without. Woodside’s coaching crew secretly love minimal substitutes. The phrase “you stay out there, there’s not much we can do” was ready to roll when needed.

The referee’s whistle sounded at 10am for kick-off.

Both team’s meant business, with Woodside’s shot-on-target count through the roof at a count of eight before the 25 minute mark. All times they were under pressure from a relentless set of quality defenders. All times the strikers had little choice but to hope the home side’s keeper would fumble the ball. All times he didn’t, the only possible explanation being a ball magnet stashed in his gloves. Either that or he’s simply good at his job.

On the 28th minute JAMES RENSHAW opened the account for Woodside. The goal came shortly after the coaching crew gave the player a two-minute warning that he’d be off soon. James simply gave reason as to why he shouldn’t be subbed.

At this point, despite the goal, neither team provided solid reason as to why they should win the game. Rangers were unfortunate not to have scored by half time, but held a strong defence. Meanwhile Woodside matched the home team with strong attacks that were too often shut down, but managed to deny anything that Rangers were looking for.

At half time the score stood one in favour of Woodside.

It was only a few minutes into the second half when EDDIE HERMAN scored. A minute later Ranger’s Charles Kammermann managed to get one past Woodside’s keeper and keep on the away team’s tail. A few minutes later JETT TONKIN added a third to the away team’s tally, the last goal of the game despite there being a half hour of play left.

Interestingly Ranger’s 12th man would be their rustic pitch. The home team certainly knew all of it’s nooks and crannies and maximised their chances through the away team not knowing the same. It’s no different than playing on a pitch with a 2 to 3 metre climb or even one with a cricket pitch in the middle of it. This is grass roots football for a reason.

The score ended in favour of Woodside, 3 to Ranger’s 1.

“As is always the case Ranger’s deserve recognition for a very strong performance”, stated one of Woodside’s coaches post game. “Anyone looking to maximise their chances will need to start by not assuming they’re going to win.”

As is tradition Coach BRUCE TONKIN often overlooks his own son’s game, often rewarding others first. Sometimes he simply can’t do that. JETT TONKIN’s performance was memorable with several quality runs down the wing followed by numerous pin-point crosses. There wasn’t too many spectators who didn’t comment likewise, leaving the coach no choice but to name him best player. JAMES RENSHAW and goal-keeper SAMUEL HERMAN had notable performances too.

The entire association now has a short break for school holidays before returning on the 24th April. At that point Rangers will meet Murray Bridge at Ashton, whilst Woodside travels to Strathalbyn for an early game.

Stirling United Soccer Club (4) vs Murray Bridge United Soccer Club (2)

The sun was peeking through at times as the players took to the pitch for this second round match between the teams that finished in second and third place in U16 last year. Murray Bridge started strongly with a couple of early chances, but as Stirling settled, Araby Phelan, playing in the unfamiliar position of left full back, pushed forward and crossed the ball superbly for Henry Monaghan to header the opening goal. Murray Bridge threatened to immediately reply with Edward Mato making a strong run down the left, his powerful shot looking in all the way until it struck the crossbar and went over.

Stirling extended their lead when Monaghan shot the ball from out on the right, drawing a great save from Jayden Vokes but the deflection fell to Toby Leigh who was able to drive the ball past Vokes and into the net.

Stirling continued to have chances to score, with both Emily Bouchereau and Monaghan missing good chances, but it was Monaghan again who controlled the ball beautifully in the box, and then slotted home a right foot shot in the bottom left corner. Mato took a free kick late that just flew over the top to see the score remain 3-0 to Stirling at half time.

Murray Bridge came out with renewed energy after half time, with Mato scoring twice, using his pace to get past the defence and despite great attempts to save from Lachlan Stein in the Stirling goal, scoring twice to reduce the margin to one with 17 minutes to play.

With the tension in the game rising, a delightful cross from Tom Harris was perfectly weighted for Zachary Gardner-Sheridan to run on to and bury the ball in the net from close range, leaving Stirling with their first win of the season.

U14G

Stirling Districts Soccer Club (2) vs Mount Barker United Soccer Club (4)

Following a minutes silence to remember Leif Justham the game commenced with SDFC making the early running and keeping the Mount Barker keeper busy on multiple occasions but none truly threatening. Mt Barker in counterattack ran in one goal and the momentum shifted to be more evenly balanced. The second half saw Mt Barker maintain their composure and remain organised to run in a further three good goals. The SDFC midfield and attack re-established composure late in the second half and despite some good attacks down the left flank were only able to bank a further goal leaving Mt Barker with a good win of 4-2 at the final whistle.

Hahndorf Soccer Club (1) vs Strathalbyn Strikers FC Inc White (5)

U14 Girls, Strath White (5) d Handorf (1)

Sat 10th April, 130pm, Strath Soccer Grounds.

A fast and furious game between Hahndorf Magpies and Strath Strikers at the Strathalbyn grounds today. The first half started to look like a walkover by Strikers with 4 goals scored, but the dynamic changed after half time break, powerful words by coach Georgia Vogelsang with Hahndorf redeeming with stronger defence.

First half saw Strath White with the ball constantly in their attacking goal but Hahndorf’s keeper, Charlotte Fairley worked hard to save many a goal. Hahndorf managed an attempt at goal at 13 minute mark but skimmed the front of the goal crossbar and bounced out.  Strath were quick to turn the ball around, get it to their goal and Layla Frahn scored the first of her 3 goals.  Hahndorf’s Ruby Tully worked hard to get to get the ball to her goal but failed to score this time, Amiel Kerber collecting her rebound, also attempting to score and missing. Strath got the ball into their attack and in a short time, Frahn scoring her second goal at the 20 minute mark, with Hahndorf learning to not kick across their goal.  Hahndorf’s Ruby Tully received the ball quickly from the centre, pushing all the way to her goal with another attempt, thwarted by Strath goalie, Gemma Hansen.  It took Hahndorf just a minute to have another goal attempt, again by Ruby Tully, again with no luck. Strath turned the ball down to their end with a goal attempt by Layla Frahn, but hitting the crossbar and bouncing out.  4 minutes later, Layla Frahn had more success at goal, pushing through 3 Hahndorf players, scoring her 3rd goal. From the centre pass, Hahndorf, once again, controlled the ball into their attack, Ruby Tully still pushing forward to goal, this time with well deserved success, finding the back of the net. With 2 minutes left of the half, Strath’s aggressive play, pushed the ball into their goal line once again, and with Layla Frahn taking a turn on the bench, Brooklyn Rigney took the scoring role with an almighty goal before the half time whistle.

Hahndorf’s half time coaching direction must’ve been successful as their defence cranked up to the next level .  It took 6 minutes for Strath to score again with Bonnie Clothier assisting with a pass to Brooklyn Rigney. And although Hahndorf’s goalie, Charlotte Fairley got a hand to it, she was disadvantaged by height and the ball found the top of the back of the net.  Rigney scoring her second goal and final goal of the match.  29 minutes left of play saw both teams working hard both defensively and attaching but neither team scoring again. Final score, just before rain and wind made the day really uncomfortable, of Strath 5 d Hahndorf 1.

Woodside Warriors Soccer Club (0) vs Torrens Valley Soccer Club (6)

The Woodside Girls played at home again this week. With a couple of new players joining them at training, they were now preparing to take to the pitch for their first game with the team and for some their first game of soccer.  The game started solidly on both sides with a lot of action in the mid-field, and it took some time before the first score of the match was made for Torrens Valley. The Woodside players reset and continued to keep the pressure on their opposition.  The Woodside defenders had to work hard, which they did extremely well and Woodside's keeper must be commended for her solid performance throughout the game.  Credit to Torrens Valley on some good play, and their own solid defence work that kept Woodside from scoring, despite a number of strong runs forward.
