Hahndorf Soccer Club vs Woodside Warriors Soccer Club Gold

First away game for the season and Hahndorf started strong with Miles Hennessey bringing it down for an early attempt at goal. Shortly after, Harris Parkyn drove forward and sent the ball sailing past Woodside’s keeper. The smiles across the pitch showed the joy and excitement at the first goal for the season!

Woodside fought back, but Amelia Ramsey defended the ball spectacularly sending it back down Hahndorf’s end - resulting in a great goal by Hennessey. Hahndorf’s offence was strong, keeping the ball in the forward half with Michael Griggs pulling off a great cross that was saved by the Woodside keeper.

Kealan Atkinson played some solid defence, pushing the ball forward to Charlie Roeszler who brought it down the pitch and passed off to Hennessey for another goal! Woodside brought the ball back down for a kick at goal with a great save by Hahndorf goalie Hamish Glynn. Woodside keeper pulled off some great saves too, but Eric Jager and Angus Clifton prevented Woodside bringing it too far into their forward half.

Glynn came out strong in the second half after a quiet time in goals, with a few great runs down the pitch getting it close to Hahndorf’s goals. Griggs stopped the ball as Woodside brought it back, did a big kick and followed it down to score. After some more tousles in the mid-pitch, Hennessey did an amazing job kicking it into the goal from the corner of the box. Woodside’s keeper did some great saves, not letting any further attempts get through.

Both teams did a great job and showed good sportsmanship throughout the game.

Woodside Warriors Soccer Club Gold vs Hahndorf Soccer Club

After a fun training session this week on holding our position and running with the ball, Woodside Gold were ready practice into action in their match. Woodside started off the game behind with two quick goals scored by Hahndorf. As the first half went on, Woodside began to prove their defensive work. After multiple attacks on their goal, we only conceded one more goal in the first half. It was a great effort by our keeper and all in defense to hald this scoreline and Woodside also came the closest we have come to scoring a goal ourselves.
The second half continued in a similar way as the first half with Woodside defending and getting their bodies in front of the ball and working hard to win the ball back after losing it.
Eventually Hahndorf managed to score a couple more before the end of the game but Woodside fought hard til the end. Well done Woodside on your continued hard work in defense and for putting into practice everything that we have been working on in training. Well done to both teams on a great match.

Round 3 Strathalbyn Vs Woodside u9

Round 3 and we had just scraped together 7 players with one out not feeling well and one gallivanting overseas, this meant that all players were going to have to contribute to keep Woodside in the hunt for another victory.

The weather was looking a little ominous with rain on the horizon, and wind blowing strongly down the pitch.

Game had started with Woodside playing into the wind. We had started well early pushing deep into the forward line, but unable to score as Strathalbyns goalie was on song.

As the half progressed Woodside began to fall out of position and ended up leaving the defence wide open with only one defender left. Strath turned the soccer ball over and a fast run into their attack bang the ball has hit the post and noooooo it had scraped in across the line. An unstoppable goal for the Woodside Goalie.

First Half was over and some half time pep talk was required.

we talked about holding our position and passing the ball to our players and playing as a team. Also we had some boots come into play and the wind was now in our favour.

1 minute into the second half GOAL !!!! scores were level 3 minutes in GOAL !!!! we were now in front 7 minutes GOAL !!!! We now had some breathing space. Who would have thoughtit, but holding space was working and we were becoming very hard to stop . 2 more goals were scored and one of which was a players first ever goal super proud of his efforts. The game really turned into a different match in the second half as we really used each other and played our parts by passing and using space.

Hahndorf Soccer Club vs Mount Barker United Soccer Club Red

The Hahndorf under 9 team put on a solid effort to come out with a draw against Mt Barker United Red.

Hahndorf athletes on their own turf turned on the heat from the beginning, with great balls skills and kicking from Levi Neumann moving the ball down the field with help from Jak Skinner, Carter Hartley and Mason Saywell.

Josh Blain was tough and took control of the ball having a powerful kick at goals. Nic Moran as goalie for the first half took a huge dive and managed to keep out all attempts  by the strong Mt Barker United strikers.

The second half remained intense, Hahndorf dominated the visitors with Danny Morgan and Harrison Whitehead right on the ball, defusing any signs of Mt Barker attacking.

Any attempts from the opposition were unsuccessful with Jasper Christou as goalie in the second half.

The Hahndorf under 9 team wish to thank Mt Barker United Red for the game played in great spirit on Saturday 14th May.

Woodside Warriors Soccer Club Blue vs Woodside Warriors Soccer Club Red

With the Manchester Derby being such a one-sided affair this year, Wednesday and United separated by a division, Newcastle and Sunderland separated by two divisions, and the dark blue side of Dundee relegated this week so putting an end to the UK’s closest derby for at least a season, one has to wonder where your average football fan can find their regular serving of grudges, tribalism and general antipathy these days. Well, one answer to that question must surely be the Woodside Rec grounds. With two U10 teams and a whopping four U8 teams, there are now more derbies at Woodside than anywhere else in Australia*. And this week, it was the hotly anticipated first meeting of Woodside U10 Red and Woodside U10 Blue.

As with most derbies, the game set off at a furious pace. In particular, Woodside Blue Captain Leo Tucker seemed to be everywhere at once and the energy he brought to the game paid off as he broke through the Reds’ defence seemingly by sheer force of willpower to find the net within the first few minutes. This, his first ever goal for the Warriors, set off some big celebrations amongst a large family contingent making up the Blues fans. The game then settled into an entertaining and even contest., with both teams creating chances and the Red team managing to restore parity as half time approached. Forward Charlotte Cosgriff nearly swung the match back in the Blues’ favour with a lovely run down the left wing, with her finish just a little wide of the mark, and the teams went into half time all square.

The second half was more of the same: some very entertaining end to-end football before the Red team broke the deadlock and swung the game to their advantage. To Woodside Blue’s credit they continued to fight with Forward Theo Nicholson working hard down the right flank and finding some good space and chances. In the end it was Tyler Berwick, working hard in the box-to-box midfielder role, who brought the game back level in the dying minutes with a powerful shot into the roof of the net that opened his account for the Warriors and brought the smiles back to his teammates’ faces. At this point the Blues’ coach decided to “park the bus”, making sure the team didn’t concede in those critical moments of vulnerability just after scoring. The Blues followed the instruction well, defending resolutely and second half goalkeeper Jock Mills pulled off a real stunner of a save to keep his team in the game, with both teams remaining level as the final whistle sounded.

There was a lot to be positive about in this match – good positioning, excellent passing movement and plenty of chances created, giving encouragement for the stern test our U10 Blues will no doubt face at home to Stirling Districts next week. The first derby of the season is over, but fear not fans of what is fast becoming one of the hottest rivalries in football: there are only five teams in our division so our sides will meet on average every fourth game this season. It will seem like Roy Wood has finally had his wish granted and it is Christmas every day.

*This is patently untrue. As a wise man once said: “88.2% of statistics are made up on the spot.”

Hahndorf Soccer Club vs Stirling Districts Soccer Club Blue

It was a drizzly start to the match but all players from both Hahndorf and Stirling Blue were ready and eager to play. As the game warmed up both teams were handling the ball well with Thomas Gould taking a corner kick towards goals, while it came close unfortunately it wasn’t quite there. This was quickly followed by Hugo Curtis making another impressive attempt, only for the ball to rebound off the post. While Hahndorf’s offence players Ashton Broadbent, Gould and Curtis fought hard with midfielders Jack Gaskin and Rowan Gilroy to keep the ball, Stirling were eventually successful at scoring the first goal of the match.  As the game continued, we saw Hahndorf’s defence team, Mason Sickerdick, Alice Cannavo, Eli Parkyn and Pearl Beesley in goals work together in preventing Stirling take another goal. Subsequently Broadbent went on to perform a great pass across to Gould who secured Hahndorf’s first goal for the game. Soon after a quick change over of players we were witness to many more impressive plays including Parkyn and Oliver Ramsey working hard to move the ball away for their opponent resulting in another goal by Freer. As the game continued one standout feature was the great communication and dedication from both the teams which was reflected in their success on both being able to score again including the success of Cohen Whinfield’s score after some fast-paced movement across the pitch. As the second half began it was clear that both teams were just as determined as they were at the start and with the aid of his teammates Broadbent was the first to take a goal for this half. Stirling were quick to retaliate, however Sickerdick was strong in his position as goalie. Play once again moved back and forth across the pitch in an evenly matched game, with both teams taking another goal each. Well done to all players on an exciting game to spectate!

Mount Barker United Soccer Club Red (6*) vs Rangers Junior Soccer Club (0)

Round 3 saw Mt Barker's U12 Red team travel to Ashton Oval to take on the Rangers.
From the opening whistle, the pendulum of momentum was undecided as to which way it would swing; it was a tight wrestle for ascendency, with both teams stringing together some good passes and fighting for possession. The Rangers struggled to test the Barker 'keeper Tyler Raven, but when they did he put in some fine saves to keep a clean sheet.  Raven was well supported by the formidable backline of Alec Belsey, Rylan Henke and Danny Paterson, who guarded their goalie with vigor and valiance. The Reds' midfield of Eric Liemareff and Max Barrljung-Hummel, supported by wingers Lincoln Denley and Harry Betts, worked well as a unit to create chances for Beau Curran up front. Both teams fought fiercely in tough windy conditions, but at half time the score was 2-0 in favour of the Reds - both goals courtesy of Curran.
In the second half, the momentum pendulun swung in favour of Mt Barker, as the reds upped the intensity. Arlo Turner provided a well-rounded performance in the midfield, helping the defence when required and kicking a goal as well. Harrison Burt was added into the defensive unit, supplying some extra pace and power to the backline. Captain Jeremy Sprau slotted into the left midfield, making some terrific runs up the line and assisting Paterson for his sole goal for the game. The Crusaders' joy didnt finish there though, as Betts sent a superb shot over the keeper for his first goal at Mt Barker. Henke moved into attack in search of an elusive maiden goal, but it was Curran who ended up doing the damage; 3 goals in the second half left him with a second 5-goal haul in a row!
To top off a fantastic match for the Reds, Lincoln Denley conjured up some magic and curled a blinder into the top corner, surprising even himself.
Credit to the Rangers for showing great sportsmanship and determination throughout the match. Another fantastic performance from an exciting young Mt Barker squad, who hold top spot on the ladder going into Round 4.
Next week, Rangers will host Mt Barker Blue, while Mt Barker Red will lock horns with Woodside.

Hahndorf Soccer Club (6) vs Stirling Districts Soccer Club (0)

Bradbury delivered a crisp autumn morning with bursts of sunshine welcomed by a large crowd.

Hahndorf left the blocks early with a quick attempt at goal but Stirling's goalie was fast to react and save.  Ryder Hill and Blain Balcom held the defence line, with Balcom's strong kick into attack allowing Harrison Gould two quick attempts at goal, followed up closely by Hayden Lien to finish off Hahndorf's first goal of the match.

Cooper Liddle passed well in the middle with a swift pass to Gould, and while Stirling held a tight defence, Pepe Zahra cleared the contest to re-set.  Liddle kept his eye on the throw in and was able to convert and celebrate with high 5s.  Lien was accurate in his attacking passing to Levi Beesley who sent through another goal, making it 3-0 to Hahndorf.

Jett Zahra showed his skills with a header towards attack, Stirling with quick reflexes was able to save another goal attempt but Lien's eagle eye used the rebound to finish off the first half with another goal.

The second half saw Daniel Peters as goalie with many gutsy saves.  Ryley Neumann up forward kept within reach of quick passes and was able to send the ball into the nets for Hahndorf's fifth goal.  Stirling had some great run along the wing, but Patrick Hinze, Ben Romaldi and Luci Tinsley-Smith kept their passes at bay.  Oliver Aylen and Jacob Gardner stuck closely to their opponents with some good hustles, followed by another attempt at goal by Beesley.  Gould, always amongst the pack, was able to pass to Beesley once again who, with a cracking kick sealed the game with another goal, making it 6-0.

Woodside Warriors Soccer Club Red (0) vs Woodside Warriors Soccer Club Blue (2)

It was Woodside V Woodside for the local Derby at the Warriors’ Fortress. And both sides were primed for a classic, with bragging rights up well and truly for grabs.

Both sides jumped out of the blocks hard with impressive passages at both ends of the ground. If either side had the early edge, it was Woodside Red, who were controlling the ball and dominating territory. But Blue snatched the early goal after just seven minutes, as Red afforded them time and space just outside the box. And with the right foot from hell, Blue’s striker didn’t need to be asked twice, driving one from 22 yards out to stretch the back of the net. After a tough couple of weeks, this gave his mates the lift they needed, and belief was blossoming amongst the newly-formed group! The remainder of the first half was an arm-wrestle. Again, Red looked good, controlling the ball and sharing possession neatly around the group, but they couldn’t deliver the final kick, finding the keepers gloves with a number of fine, if ambitious, shots and several ill-directed crosses.

The second term was a carbon copy of the first with Woodside Red taking the points on possession and territory but unable to trouble the scorer as Blue scrambled well and their keeper put in a truly classy performance with the mitts! If anything was lacking from Red’s game it was front-half pressure. Time and again they gave their opponents time and space to play easily out from the back to relinquish the territorial advantage that they had fought for. At their defensive end they were applying solid pressure, but a momentary lapse ten minutes into the second half gave Blue a two-goal lead as their striker bagged a brace with another clean strike into the top corner from 22 yards out. This deficit was almost cut back by Woodside Red twice, first when a beautifully timed free-kick sailed inches wide from 25 yards out, and then when a beautifully struck corner curled in and hit the cross bar. But near misses aren’t recorded on the scoreboard and Blue were able to run the game out without conceding.

With a win on the cards and the team starting to gel, Woodside Warriors Blue look set for a fine season. Woodside Red also look primed for a great season and could easily have taken the choccies on this occasion if a few things had gone their way. And if the young lads and lasses from both Woodside outfits stick with the game, we can look forward to many enthralling derbies in the coming years. Bring It On!

Hahndorf Soccer Club (4) vs Stirling Districts Soccer Club Blue (2)

Blustery weather welcomed the teams as Hahndorf faced Stirling Districts Blue in a fast paced and evenly matched game. The Hahndorf Under U15 team put in a strong effort to win 4-2 against a very capable and determined opposition.

Hahndorf started strong with an early attempt at goal by centre forward Lance Pope. Stirling Districts kept up the pressure and Angus Mifsud covered a lot of ground in defence. At the 12th minute, Toby Thomas netted the first goal of the day. Stirling Districts replied with an attempted goal which was well defended by Hahndorf goalie Thomas Boekel. Oscar Johnson worked tirelessly in the midfield with some fantastic passing displayed and Hahndorf managed to maintain control of the game with a second goal coming from Lance Pope. Stirling Districts replied with their first goal of the game soon after.

In the second half both teams kept up the pressure with strong defending from Zara Tinsley Smith and Rhys Davies. Alexander Romaldi shone in the second half with some very smart play from the backline. Jesse Powell scored Hahndorf’s third goal which was followed closely by a goal for Stirling Districts. Left forward, Mitchell Stribley demonstrated some great play and set up some fantastic shots. Boekel was kept busy with several spectacular saves as Stirling Districts fought hard to gain control, but another goal from Pope with only 5 minutes remaining in the match left Hahndorf victorious.

Congratulations to both teams on a well fought game, that was exciting to watch.

U17

Woodside Warriors Soccer Club Blue (4) vs Woodside Warriors Soccer Club Red (3)

The two Woodside teams faced off this weekend in what was likely to be a good contest. With injuries and illnesses in both squads, both teams required the assistance of players from our U15 team. For the Blues it was a speedy fourteen year old who usually played forward but today was required to put his skills to good use in the defensive line.

Both teams started at a frantic pace with each trying to create opportunities. The Blue team managed to get its first corner and with a well placed kick from the Blues striker he found the head of Blues centre back who was free to clearly nod it home for the opening goal. Red though were not to be out done, and when a long ball caught the Blues defense napping, their centre forward managed to slot the ball home to even the score. With scores even, both midfields stepped up a level and fought hard to get the ball forward to awaiting strikers. Half way through the half, Blues struck again with a well placed kick from its left midfielder. Again Red struck soon after conceding and the contest was on. Through good soccer, the Reds were gaining the upper hand and scored their third to take the lead. This lifted the Blue team and they started to find space outside their opponent's box but the blustery conditions saw many of their shots sail over the crossbar. Red though continued to add pressure and just before the half time break the Blues centre back got an unkind bounce with the ball hitting his hand in the penalty area and Reds were awarded a penalty. Red's skipper took the penalty kick but the Blues keeper guessed the right side and got a foot on the ball and pushed it wide. That’s how the first half finished with Woodside Red 3 Blue 2.

After the half time break both teams came out to resume the competition with Blues looking for that elusive goal to get back in the contest and Red looking to increase their lead. Five minutes after the restart, the Blues striker found the back of the net and we were again tied. As the minutes ticked down the game was beginning to get more physical with every player Red and Blue fighting to win that ball that would give their team an opportunity to score. Blue though looked the more composed passing the ball around to get themselves out of trouble and were starting to get behind the Red's defense. With still 20 minutes to play, the Blues striker scored his second for the game and give them the lead, but all the spectators and coaches knew that this game was not finished with both teams playing good competitive football. As minutes ticked away both teams came close to scoring and as the final five minutes approached the Red’s pushed players forward while Blue strengthened its back line with an additional player. When the final whistle sounded Blue had managed a narrow win over their team mates from Red.

It was an exciting game and I am sure coaches, players and spectators look forward to the next three times these two teams will compete against each other in a home derby. A huge thanks to the Blues keeper who stepped in and played the whole game this week after short notice. We look forward to competing hard with this team again next time.

Stirling Districts Soccer Club (1) vs Strathalbyn Strikers FC Inc (1)

Slightly breezy but mild conditions brought a lively start to the game with Stirling mounting many attacks particularly through Ruby Tully, Flossie Baker, Zora Huang and Auriana Healy. Strathalbyn defence held firm however and was able to shield their keeper from too much pressure – thwarting most forays around the edge of the 18-yard box. Strathalbyn in return mounted several good attacks but strong defence from Isabelle Bailes and Evie Reid combined with good keeping from Zoe York never saw the Stirling side too troubled.

The second half saw the Stirling side running with the breeze and it was not long before their persistent attacks were rewarded through a goal to Evie Reid. Shortly afterwards an unfortunate hand ball on the edge of the 18-yard box gave Strathalbyn a penalty which was very ably taken by Bethany North, leaving Stirling keeper En Ueda with no chance, to bring the game back to 1-1. There after the game continued very much like the first half with some notable attacks down the left wing by Eviemae Kaines rattling the Strathalbyn goal posts several times. Strathalbyn returned fire but again Stirling were up to the task leading to a draw at the final whistle.

U17G

Woodside Warriors Soccer Club Red (2) vs Mount Barker United Soccer Club (2)

Woodside U17G travelled to Bradwood Park looking to atone for last week and eager to get a result on the board against the team from Mt Barker. No doubt both teams were keen to kick start their seasons. Generally, it was an overcast day but the threat of rain did not eventuate and conditions did not unduly affect either team.

Mt Barker were missing some players and so it was agreed to play 10 a side with Mt Barker borrowing a player from Woodside. Thanks must go to Sofia who volunteered to help them out and ensure a fair match and more than held her own in the contest.

Woodside kicked off the first half. Things started evenly with both sides working their way into the game. The ball moved from end to end with neither side really finding an advantage. It looked like it could be a tight and entertaining game between two evenly matched teams. Defences appeared to be dominant although both teams did make inroads into attack. The game continued to ebb and flow with no clear chances.

Then disaster struck for Woodside with Mt Barker finding themselves behind the defence and beating the keeper to take a 1 - nil lead. This set Woodside back on their heels and Mt Barker suddenly appeared to be the dominant team. That dominance was assured soon after with some clever play delivering a second Mt Barker goal. It seemed Woodside may be headed the wrong way down a familiar path. Players were flat footed. They did not seem to be able to get any flow back into their game and held on by their fingernails to make it to half time.

The first half ended and a group of disappointed players made their way to the sideline for a break and to regather for the second half. Despite the scoreline, the players were reminded of the positive moments from the first half and that if they stuck to the game plan it was possible to turn things around. Players recharged their batteries, rehydrated and tucked into the array of sugary lollies supplied by Team Manager - Christina. It is amazing what the combination of sugar and red food colouring can do for a team.

A revitalised Woodside team took to the field for the second half with a few positional changes. Alice moved to the right wing to provide an alternative path into attack. Sophie switched to a more sweeping role, in behind Rosie, Sarah and Alexandra in defence. Karina and Tilly dropped into the midfield to assist. Woodside immediately began to chip away at the Mt Barker defence, putting them under more pressure in the hunt for the elusive first goal of their season.  Grace and Star began to get on the end of some through balls and looked dangerous, streaming towards the goal.

The midfield began to provide a better link between defence and attack. Some real positives began to emerge. Leila ran all over the field. Karina provided stoic resistance and pressure on the player in possession. Tilly patrolled the left hand side providing valuable defence. Alexandra kept competing hard to thwart the opposition.

Finally the moment arrived and Grace was able to get behind the defence and charge towards the goal. A terrific shot found its way past the keeper. Woodside had pulled a goal back and was now firmly back in the game.

Woodside spirits lifted. It seemed like Woodside were on top and that the equaliser would come. However despite Woodside continuing to attack, a number of chances came to no avail.

It was by no means all one way traffic. Mt Barker also had chances and found themselves deep in attack at times. Nonetheless the reliable Woodside defence held firm to continue to deny Mt Barker and Evie in goals pounced on any balls that came her way. Evie began to be the initiator of some good Woodside play, quickly distributing the ball to free teammates and allowing Woodside to build from the back and counter attack down the right hand side.

Finally, Grace was again able to beat the Mt Barker defence and get a second goal past the keeper to score her brace. Scores were tied once again.

Suddenly, Woodside could sniff the chance of an elusive win and they continued to attack. Mt Barker were surprised by many fine moves. The chances continued to come for Woodside but they were thwarted by the keeper. A corner and a free kick from the edge of the box also provided hope.

Both teams were becoming weary but they continued to fight hard, each team desperate to finish the game with a win.

Then in the final moments of the game Grace had one last chance to score but the shot was parried by the Mt Barker keeper in what proved to be the last play of the game. The final whistle sounded.

So close and yet so far. It was a spirited performance from the players and they showed great heart to come from 2- nil down and almost snatch an unlikely win. All players contributed in a whole team effort. The positive second half shows that they should believe in their own abilities and that with hard work and effort they can continue to improve and play smart and skillful football. After playing all other teams once, Woodside should be confident that at their best they will provide stern competition.

Thanks again to Alice, Evie, Grace, Rosie and Sarah who also played in the earlier U14G game.
