Match report

Well done to Woodside Red who surprised Mt Barker that obviously were expecting an easy match. We proved quite the opposite. Everyone played to the best of their abilities, and it was great to see the improvement just keeps coming. We could see from the line that all players gave it their all, and the pressure we put on the ball meant they really struggled to find space to play, and thus the game looked much more like a game that could have gone either way.

The midfield provided by Sam, Lysiane and Flynn was outstanding. Sam was on the ball, and the space left when he was not in the middle was obvious. Lysiane put in some very strong tackles that had the opposition cowering in fear, looking for her when they got the ball just to be sure they weren’t next! Flynn showed his skill at ball control and positioning, doing a great job in covering defence when there was no one in the middle, crossing over with Ruby at times and clearing the ball on multiple occasions. Ryan played an inside forward position, helping out the midfield at times, but scoring an amazing goal at a difficult angle with a keeper in front of him.

Our defence played amazingly. Cooper was strong in centre defence and tackled hard and cleared, keeping his position well covered at all times. Bob played his usual no nonsense game shutting down Mt Barkers wingers easily. Ruby was fast and pressured the ball, stopping any chance of the wingers getting any room to play. Finally, Cohenn did an amazing job somehow managing to cover two positions – sweeper and centre defensive midfield – both at once. I’m not sure how he knew just where to be, not only to clear the ball from defence but also to move forward and push the ball past our midfield.

It was great to see Riley V, Banjo, Riley T and George all pressuring the ball in attack and pushing the ball past their defence. George played some great tackles, Riley V played some nice passes and Banjo just ran and ran. Riley T and Banjo both had some great saves in keeper, both stopping multiple goals!

Overall, it is satisfying to see that everyone enjoyed the game, and all are having fun whilst they are improving. If we keep working on our individual weaknesses whilst playing to our strengths, our last games will surprise some of the opposing teams. Well done Reds!
