Match report

Excitement filled the air as Woodside Gold arrived to play Nairne at the Nairne Primary School on Saturday. Six of the 10 Gold players were either new to the game or the club and it was quickly evident a few had arrived with trepidation. Nairne had only 6 players so it was agreed that Gold would lend them a player. Ashley Hendrie was quick to offer as he new his opponents who are fellow school buddies. Gold dominated the first half and when the ball entered Nairne's half, "captain of the day" Charlie Dvorak sent it back with force. In a brilliant back and forth passing sequence by twins Toby and Jo Smith which bewildered the defence, the final pass went to Stefan Sims who slammed the ball into the net. Zaion Lorefice and Toby Riemann were also contributing well to push the ball forward as the half ended with Gold surprised they had the upper hand. With players reluctant to join Nairne for the second half, Jo Smith was sent over and with his twin as goalkeeper Gold had their two most experienced players out of the field of play. Nairne began to take control of the game despite the exhuberance of Logan Pielago while Jack Hogan did some good throw-ins down the line. About five different Gold players had a clear shot on goal in the second half only to lose control at the last second or see their shot go just wide. It was a better-than-expected start to the season and was a promising indication that the Gold team will be competitive against some of the other teams.
