Woodside Warriors U13 Blue held the season opener at their home ground, hosting Mount Barker United.

On a beautiful autumn morning, play was underway and both sides slowly started to find their touch and shook out the pre season cobwebs. Elliot Klein opened the scoring for the Warriors in the 10 minute mark and the team began to settle and control the game. Rojo Nambiar started the game at right midfield and started dominating his forward thrusts and he too, opened his account bringing the score to 2-0.  Luke Somes playing his first game for the Warriors got some touches in defence which helped stopped the surging United attacks, alternating with Deagan Arnold, the Warriors were getting caught out with the long balls and Mount Barker pulled a quick answer goal. Xavier Varelias also played his debut game for the Warriors and linked up with midfielders Jamie Spooner to register his first goal for his new team. Nambiar started to dominate again and registered another quick answer goal to steady the Warriors however, Mount Barker, dug deep and refused to allow the game to get away from them. They rallied again and put another goal past Warrior’s keeper Axel Vassos. The sides went into the half time break 4-2.

Jordon Virgara played a pivotal role from defence, and was supported strongly by Sid Cotton and another debutant Thomas Constable. The defence allowed the Warriors midfielders to supply the forwards with slick passes and which allowed Nambia to register his first hattrick for the year. Finn Craddock played up front for most of the game giving the forwards many opportunities to score and the Warriors became agonisingly close to blowing the game wide open. Mount Barker scored again quickly but, Barny Bevan’s ball movements down the right wing provided some delicious crosses for Varelias and Josh Constable who both scored goals to ensure that any more comebacks from United were answered in quick succession. Both sides played extremely well, a thoroughly entertaining 7-4 victory to the Warriors over a Mount Barker side who scored some wonderful goals through some brilliant transitional play.
