Match report

A beautiful sunny Winter’s day made perfect conditions for the first game of the season at Torrens Valley’s home game.

The game kicked off after Woodside winning the coin toss and Valley starting with possession. Within the first few minutes of the game Woodside were on the defence applying pressure to Valley’s forward players but were taken by surprise as Valley scored their first goal of the season. But it wasn’t easy; Woodside’s goalkeeper was at the ready saving the first shot on goal. It didn’t take long for Valley to turn over possession soon after kick off and scored their second goal. It was here where the Woodside girls realised they had to start playing smart. Apprehending this, Valley had to quickly seek any opportunity to take the ball up front as quick as possible and shoot from outside the box. However Woodside’s keeper read the play all too well and applied the pressure one-on-one with the shooter. Woodside’s defence were quick to support the goalkeeper and were able to clear the shot on goal. It wasn’t long until the Valley girls turned the play back into their possession and were quick to run back into the box. This swift more didn’t go unseen as Woodside’s defence were strong and caught Valley offside.

After a substitution from both parties and a couple more goals scored by Valley, the game continued to play out with Woodside on the defence applying the pressure. Soon a glimmer of light shone over the pitch and Woodside’s midfielder Maya took possession. After saving it from Valley’s shot on goal and clearing it up the pitch, she was quick to take it up to Valley’s goalkeeper. With support of her fellow midfielders, she ran upfront and contested one-on-one with Valley’s goalkeeper. Valley’s keeper was ready for action and held her ground saving the goal. Valley were quick to get the ball back in their forward line and score their next goal.

Half time saw Valley hot on Woodside’s tail and winning possession. Woodside were at the ready playing defensively and making their players. Another three goals scored in the last half of the game by Valley and the last few minutes of the game were in sight with Woodside on the defence and the ball in Valley’s possession.

The final score did not reflect the game. Both teams were on the ball after a belated start to the season. With no cards given, it was respectful game where both teams were just happy to be back on the pitch playing the game we love.

“Great first game for both teams, despite the loss Woodside fought to the end applying pressure on Valley. The girls did really well for their first game playing together” Woodside’s coach, Katrina Rose.

Thank you to Torrens Valley for hosting the game with Covid19 restrictions also in play. Thank you to the referee who did an amazing job and to the supporters who came out to cheer on the girls from a distance. Bring on the rest of the seaon.
