Match report

The weather proved to be as much of a challenge for this Cup match as our opposition, as the Under 12s dug deep in driving rain and miserable conditions to face off against Stirling on Wednesday night.

The defence had their work cut out for them, and had to find inner reserves as they tried to negotiate some very fast Stirling players, a slippery ball and pitch, and soaking uniforms.

One goal snuck in early in the first half off a Stirling player and Woodside rallied towards the end of the half, managing to dominate possession but unfortunately could not find the back of the net.

Dom Silvestri had a good crack at goal from the wing and Oscar Maguire also came close, but there were few opportunities for our strikers as Stirling mobilised their defenders in front of the goal area amongst a tangle of legs and players.

With the conditions and morale deteriorating in the second half, the fierce battle continued. James Lunnon ran his legs off down the wing several times and the other defenders, including Sid Cotton, Max Davis and Israel Maxwell kept the pressure on to try and minimise Stirling’s chances.

By the end of the match, Barnaby Bevan saved a dozen or so goals, and even had an impressive one-two save as Stirling relentlessly pushed forward, exploiting any holes they could find in our defence. Two more goals from Stirling secured their 3-0 win.

The players were all relieved when the final whistle blew, and are hoping the weather improves for this weekend’s matches. No doubt many parents will be investing in some base layers for under uniforms so the kids can play their best no matter what the weather throws at us for the rest of the season.
