Match report

In drizzly intermittent rain Woodside Under 10 Reds took on Mount Barker Blue. Last time these two teams met the final result was a hard fought draw.

The first half was a story of many opportunities to open the scoring but with Mount Barker opting to start their best players in defense, all scoring opportunities were off target. Charlie Barrat provided a good assistant to Josh Constable allowing Josh to have

many attempts on goal and was unlucky he didn’t have a handful of goals before half time. The hard work between them took pressure of our midfielders when the ball was in dispute after a Mount Barker kick out which allowed us to reset and keep the ball in our attacking half.

Mount Barker started to link up some nice passing in the midfield and by towards the end of the first half had managed to string a success of forward attacks deep into our defense.

Unfortunately just before half time an amazing strike from the left wing spilt our defenders and the pace of the incoming strike caught Axel off guard. Mount Barker went into the half time break 1 goal to nil up.

The half time huddle was full of hope as the effort in the first is close to the best that we have seen year to date. Jamie Spooner’s work in midfield was the best we’ve seen all season and he earnt a well earn rest at half time.

Axel Vassos , who despite having some talents between the sticks begged to be released from goal keeper duties. His persistence paid off and Axel started in the midfield at the beginning of the second half. Some great forward pressure from our midfielders and then a sublime pass from Jamie resulted in Axel having a shot on goal and converting to tie the game. The Warriors who were the better side for a majority of the match smelt an opportunity to take control of the game and minutes later Axel scored his second goal and was relieved that debt owed on the first half conceded goal had now been repaid.

Josh was unlucky with multiple shots on the tiny goals just going wide – on any other ground he would have 3+ to his name.

Mount Barker rallied and started piling the pressure on our defense however, Nate, Finn and Rojo held firm. Finn provided the forwards with countless opportunities with some amazing runs from deep in our defensive half to beyond the half way line. Elliot Klein was everywhere as usual busy in both defense and attack and had many shots of goals.

Some great link up play between Josh, Axel allowed Elliot to find some space in front of goal and within the blink of the eye the ball was firmly in the back of the net. Elliot’s goal created a much needed buffer and for the remainder of the game the Warriors defended valiantly to the end resulting in a hard fought and well earnt 3-1 victory.

A very solid team effort, the win was thoroughly deserved -the boys should be very proud of the result against a strong opposition.
