Match report

The first game of the season between these two teams was played at Strathalbyn on a cool, sunny day. There was a gentle breeze and a small crowd of spectators had gathered along the pitch or were watching from their cars.

The game started and both teams took a while to settle and get into their rhythm. It was obvious that players were rusty and adjusting to new team structures. The Woodside Rams were the first to really pressure Mt Barker's defence and scored through Grace Quane after the 7th minute of play. Mt Barker were quick to respond though, getting behind Woodside's defence several times. A fast break in the 9th minute saw them level the scores at 1-1 and then they drew ahead when an excellent long shot deflected off of the cross bar and was tapped in by a Mt Barker player who had made good position in the 11th minute.

The game settled into an arm wrestle with both teams creating some good chances. It wasn't until the 32nd minute that Woodside Rams were able to score through a strong strike from Louise Isitt. Woodside Rams and Mt Barker were into their rhythm now and working hard. The forwards were making good ground but the defensive lines of both teams were working hard to regain control of the ball and suppress attacking options. Half time came with no further score from either team and the score at 3-2 in Woodside Rams' favour.

The second half started as the first half had ended with both teams creating opportunities but neither able to score. A tense game unfolded- mids intercepted, forwards created opportunities and made their shots, goal keepers and backs defended and repelled. Woodside Rams were able to control the last few minutes of the game with a numbers of attacking moves and shots on goal, but Mt Barker were able to keep the ball out at every turn. The second half ended with neither team able to find the net and the scores remained at 3-2 with Woodside Rams able to grind out a narrow victory over Mt Barker.

Players from both teams should be proud of their first effort for the season and giving us a taste of an exciting competition to come.
