We were treated to another beautiful Autumn morning for Round 7 against Stirling at our home ground. We were missing a couple of players this week but decided to play all our players in a 5v5 game to allow them optimal pitch time. After a round of rock paper scissors woodside won the opportunity to start the kick off.
It was evident from the beginning that this was going to be a tight game with Stirling showing a good defensive line. However, after the first 5 mins Everett managed to find the back of the net and there was celebration from all, especially the great parental support group on the sidelines. Woodside continued to try and put into play what coach Woody has been practicing with them in training and showed great improvement with their kick ins, passing and spreading out. But the most improvement was shown in their defensive line with them racing to stop Stirling’s attackers’ attempts at goal. Woodside managed to keep Stirling from scoring for most of the first half with some great defensive saves, in particular from Lincoln, Harvey and Ted, however at the 17th minute Stirling levelled the score.
By half time it was warming up and with no subs Woodside was ready to have a break and catch their breath. After lots of watermelon, oranges and water they were ready to go back out there for some more fun. The second half saw more great defensive work from both teams. Jack and Everett had some great attacking kicks but Stirling managed to block these sending it back toward their half. The Woodside boys persisted, giving it their all despite starting to show obvious signs of tiredness. Stirling managed to find the back of the net again in the second half with the game finishing with a very tight margin. It was a great game from both sides. Coach Woody and the Woodside parents were so proud of the determination and improvement that all the boys showed with every player playing their best game of the season so far.
