Round 15.                        Hahndorf vs Woodside u9

It had been a wet couple of weeks with approx 200mm of rain falling in the past fortnight, and Hahndorf’s oval was sodden, and heavy. It was going to be a hard, physical game under foot.

The whistle blew and game was underway, minutes in and the realisation that one of Woodside’s players had only sneakers on as they slipped and slid every time they were trying to press on the ball was evident and the opposition took advantage of this running rings around our attack and pushing deep into our defence early. Woodside was ready for this kind of pressure as our defence had developed into possibly the best defensive side in the u9 competition. Every time Hahndorf drove in to the Woodside defence, they would jockey and push them wide leaving easy options for the goalie to stop or goal kick opportunities.

Hahndorf would keep that pressure on us but then a slip up by them and a poor throw in out in front of goal and bang Woodside converted first putting them one up ahead of a well drilled Hahndorf team.

Second half Woodside was looking like they had had some weeks off the pitch with some tiered legs as the pace of the game slowed to a marathon style game.

Number 7 from Hahndorf was somehow still running as he seemed to be trying to do everything for the team and finally he kicks a big ball over the goalies head and manages to score. 6 minutes to go and scores are level.

It was looking like Hahndorf might get over us but our goalie in second half made some unbelievable saves diving and clean catches, a kick out and away from a close range shot. It was really a fine effort to hold off a team of such calibre to a draw.

Final score 1/1
