Match report

Woodside Red had a hard fought match today against our frienemies Woodside Blue! The improvements from last week were easily seen from the sideline, with a lot less silly defensive errors and more convincing tackling and clearances. Many players clearly were starting to settle into their abilities, and the strong first half showed just what we are capable of. Sam took on a familiar role in central defence, and although we missed him in midfield, his defensive prowess saw him getting some great tackling and clearances in the most important position. Cohen played a new position for him, sweeper, and the combination of his determination, speed and tackling shut down a lot of the Blues attacking motions. Flynn played in left back, and shut down many winger runs and crosses. Banjo and Riley both worked hard in right back, and showed their want to get the ball on many occasions. This defensive line of 4 opened up our game compared to last week and the strength of our defense today was a joy to watch. Riley T had a cracker of a game in keeper (again), covering the goal with great skill and saving many goals! Riley (for his defensive determination), Flynn (for his strength) and Ruby (for her relentlessness) received players of the match.

Lysiane played very strongly in central midfield with a lot of movement and strong tackles. George ventured out of defense into midfield, and by the second half was showing his want to get the ball and ability to lay off some strategic passes. Ruby was a little firecracker and just ran and ran, and although her kick lacks strength, she more than makes up for it in passing accuracy and thought. Manny and Ryan struggled to get the ball, but on the occasions they did it was moved artfully and creatively between them.

It would be easy to say that we did not do well, but the final result does not show just how strong and improved we played in the first half. Most of the goals were scored against us in the late second half, when our lack of any reserves saw us all tired (even me!) But if we look at how much we improved in just a week, we just need to keep learning how to work together in a positive way. Our positioning is better, but there is still some crowding we need to work to avoid. Well done all!
