Lashing rain offered no deterrent as the U13 Magpies secured a convincing win over the Ashton Hills Rangers at home. A deep penetrating kick by Harry Wood in the opening minute moved Hahndorf deep into the Rangers half. The Ranger’s defence was tidy, but after a missed first attempt at goal, Louis Moran exploited a second opening in the opposition’s defence and scored in the 20th minute. Sonjae Cook and Rigby Barnes provided a strong midfield with highly accurate connecting passes, and despite much of the game being played in the opposition’s half, defenders Jack Gaskin, Caleb Earley, Noah Duggan and Sam Griffiths remained as sentinels, ever watchful but quick to react when the Rangers applied pressure. Five minutes later a clean cross was buried by Flynn Menzies, who then successfully returned fire from a Rangers Keeper save to lift the Magpies lead to 3-0 at the break.
The 7th minute of the second half saw a neat header by Tom Gould find its mark, and the Magpies never took their foot of the pedal from there. Eli Parkyn showed prowess with a long-range strike which was right on target, and after copping a ball in the mouth Gould got his own back 2 minutes later, lifting the score to 6-0. Hahndorf then found another gear, with further goals provided by Menzies, Gould, Moran and three by Jackson Bidgood. With injuries on the Rangers side and their numbers depleted, class was shown by Oliver Ramsey, Parkyn and Griffiths who pulled on Rangers colours so play could resume. Gaskin and Ramsey helped ensure any attempts to penetrate the Magpie’s defences were thwarted. 11-0 at the final whistle.
