Match report

On this cool and overcast Hills Saturday morning in Basket Range, the entire team of Hahndorf U7s took on Bridgewater Blue in a 7v7 ‘scratch match’, with Hahndorf’s game captain Avery Buchanan winning the coin toss in front of a crowd of approximately 30 eagerly awaiting parents, siblings, family, and friends. After a frantic reshuffle, Hahndorf players Axel Pym, Asa Bartsch, Buchanan, Hamish Holmes, Patrick Griggs, Victor Bartsch, and William Moran (goalkeeper) made their way on field, with Ryan Glynn donning a blue bib and joining the Bridgewater Blue side. Hahndorf started off with the downhill advantage, with most of the game being played in Hahndorf’s forward. An early (unsuccessful) attempt at goal from Holmes seemingly opened the floodgates with A Bartsch scoring the first, followed soon with a goal from V Bartsch, kicked from around the halfway line! At the ten-minute mark, Hahndorf substitutes Alfie McConville, Chloe Pippos, and Finn Bond took to the field with Glynn returning to the Hahndorf side and A Bartsch joining Bridgewater. The Hahndorf attack wasted no time continuing their ferocity at goal throughout the first half with Buchanan, A Bartsch, Bond, and Glynn making a number of attempts, all unfortunately either missing the mark, or thwarted by the Bridgewater Blue goalkeeper.

Returning from half time saw a change in goalkeeper to Holmes and Moran joining the Bridgewater side. Holmes, McConville, and Pym were excellent in defense, clearing the ball as well saving several runs/kicks on goal, including a save by Holmes at full leg stretch! The second half was quieter, but included several runs down the pitch by Hahndorf, with numerous attempts at goal by the Bartsch brothers that unfortunately just did not hit the mark. Moran was persistent in offense, scoring a goal for Bridgewater while on loan. At the 10-minute mark the Hahndorf side had another reshuffle, with Moran and substitutes Glynn and V Bartsh returning to the side and Griggs joining the Bridgewater side for the final quarter of play. Bridgewater inadvertently scored a goal for Hahndorf, no doubt confused with all the changes. With rain threatening, and already starting to drizzle, the game wound down with some back and forth from both sides, and quite a few throw-ins. The Hahndorf team and officials would like to thank the Bridgewater Blue team and officials for a great game.
