The Under 8s Round 13 match between Hahndorf and Mount Barker United Blue provided a minute silence prior to kick-off in memory of Rob Kilpatrick.
Hahndorf started the game on the front foot with Joshua Blain testing the Mt Barker
defence. Ali Semple managed to get a shot away that just missed the post. Hahndorf
showed some great individual skill, with Oliver Knight going on a mazy run when
released by a pinpoint pass from Levi Neumann. Owen Hoyle thought he made the
breakthrough with a long-range effort though a crowd of players, but it just missed
the target. Rosie Semple was in good defensive form and was able to release to Hoyle
who hit the target, but the keeper was able to save the shot. Mt Barker started to push
forward but were stopped by an alert midfield. Carter Hartley was involved in a heavy
challenge but was able to dust himself down; and showed no fear in getting back
involved in the game. In the second half Soren Mickan found his feet with some
great runs that had the Mt Barker defence on the backfoot. Mt Barker thought they
had a chance to take the lead with a breakaway counterattack, but a last ditch tackle
by Carter Hartley saved the team from going behind. The final minutes of the game saw Hahndorf
mount the pressure with multiple shots by Neumann, Mickan and Hoyle that had the crowd
on their feet. With the final whistle about to be blown Mickan fired the ball into
the back of the net for a goal. Hahndorf showed persistence and finally their determination was rewarded.
