Match report
Woodside U13 Blue hosted Mount Barker for the opening round of the newly split Div 1 competition. Woodside, still waiting on players to return from injury, shuffled the pack again and welcomed junior player Cody Hill for his first run in u13’s. Traditionally these two teams have played with a very similar style, both exhibit an exciting attacking flair which leads to a high scoring affair which has often proven to very entertaining to watch. This match started in a similar fashion, Joshua Constable opened his account for the morning with a 3rd minute goal followed by Elliot Klein’s 5th minute goal which indicated that we were about to witness another thoroughly  entertaining match. Oliver Boerth headed up the Warrior’s defence and was under immediate pressure as Mount Barker pressed forward with electric pace, cutting through a stunned Woodside defence and expertly registered their first goal through J Burzacott. Woodside, sensing the threat of how easily Barker could counter attack dug deep and reloaded their own pressure back on Barker. Rojo Nambiar was his usual busy self, intercepting the balls in dispute and carrying the ball deep into attack to allow the Warrior’s strikers numerous attempts to pepper the Barker goal mouth. Nambiar was rewarded for his high work rate with an 18th minute goal which allowed the Warriors some well needed breathing space. Xavier Varelias guided a ball into the back of the net which allowed the Warriors to go into half time with a 3 goal advantage. The second half started positively for both teams, the Warriors sensing that Barker could score with any counter attack. Axel Vassos, the Warriors keeper, proved to be the a nuisance to the Barker strikers as a number of the shots on goal were mopped up which allowed Troy Murray to start dominating the ball delivery to the Warriors midfielders. Murray chalked up his first assist and Contestable’s forward pressure was too much for Barker to absorb and he added another 2 goals registering yet another hat trick for the season. Jordan Vigara pilled on the pressure from the right wing and Varelias also lifted and was also able to add another goal to put the game just out of Barker’s reach. Their 2 goals pushed the Warriors all the way to full time. Final score Warriors 7 and Mount Barker 3.
