Woodside Rams  (blues) VS Mount Barker  u17 Girls

The  game was at Strathalbyn on a cold but sunny winters day. The girls were keen to finally get to play after a long preseason almost a full squad present and excitement in the air.

Captains were presented and expectations of crowd, coaches, managers and players were high, with a bunch of girls in their first ever game and the Woodside and Mount Torrens still finding their feet as an amalgamated team Woodside Rams. 

The game started and it was expected to be a tight encounter as history has shown this. 

And the game did not disappoint. Woodside Rams took the lead early, with a beautiful run from our forwards making a brake and converting. Mount Barker replied quickly and pushed back into the lead after some loose balls got pounced on and pushed into the net. 

Half time was drawing close and the blues pushed into the lead, leaving a 1 goal lead at the half time brake. 

Some important pep talk, strategy was had, some position changes made and of course lollies eaten and the team took to the field again.

The tightness of the game increased with both teams working out what was needed to hold back the other team from scoring. There was some close opportunities where the goal post were hit or the ball past by its near side.  Even a face saving a goal, talk about putting your body on the line. 

Tension were high and so was my heart rate just watching, I can’t imagine how stressed the girls would have been playing. The clock seemed to be on slow motion, but eventually the whistle blew and the game was done. Well done to both teams as it could have gone either way at any point. What a great way to start the season. 

Congratulations to all the girls that played there first ever game today and I hope it is the beginning of many more as we look forward to the season ahead.
