Match report

It wasn't that long ago that everyone was querying whether the AHJSA 2020 Season would even kick off. It wasn't long before that when people had no clue about the pandemic that lay before them. And prior to that there were fires that came uncomfortably close to a couple of clubs, Woodside included.

To indicate that the eventual season kick-off was a relief is a gross understatement. The efforts it took by all clubs as well as the association to get everyone out on the pitch makes every other season look like playschool. To also have the weather switched on for the season opener made it ever so splendid.

On Saturday, 27th of June, Woodside played host to Stirling United. This was at Stirling's request after realising their pitch wasn't adequately prepared for such an important event. Woodside, happy to oblige, has always had a strong relationship with this team. Rivals, for sure, but in the nicest possible way.

Both Woodside and Stirling United fielded an encouraging mix of experienced and new players. Meanwhile both sets of supporters welcomed the season whilst honoring the social distancing guidelines. The referee was clear on player expectations and everything was set. The game kicked off at 9am.

Despite Woodside's reformed defensive line Stirling's relentless attacks were sure to find an opening. Sure enough HENRY MONAGHAN found that gap, opening the score line for Stirling early in the game.

Woodside, knowing that the game was always going to be a challenge, acknowledged their inadequacy and tried to balance the play, at least for the next 30 minutes. Whilst there was no scoring it was still in Stirling's favour with multiple solid strikes at goal. It was Woodside's goal keeper, SAM HERMAN, who was directly responsible for the nil scoreline during this time.

Stirling's PATRICK SMITH managed to find the net before half time, putting his team in a 2-0 lead going into the break. A 40 minute half, new to most of the players, is a long time and the break was welcomed.

The second half continued much in the same vein. A lot of action, particularly by Stirling's attacking players and Woodside's goal keeper. It wasn't until PATRICK SMITH sunk another one for Stirling, not long before full time.

The end result, 3-0 to Stirling United, sees them open the season second on the ladder after Strathalbyn White's easy win over fellow team, Strathalbyn Red. Meanwhile Woodside lands them in the bottom half with 0 points.

"Outstanding perfomances by both teams", stated Coach BRUCE TONKIN post game. "Obviously with the result we had the action was all within our defense. SAM HERMAN and MASON DUNOW were integral in preventing the game from being different. Man of the match was IZEYAH RAYMOND, who brought more than was expected of him in the midfield."

Next weekend Woodside will take on the newly entered BHS Forest team after their loss to Rangers, whilst Stirling United will meet Hahndorf after their draw with Murray Bridge.
