Match report

Parents braved the cold and windy conditions at Birdwood this morning for the U12 match between Torrens Valley and Woodside Warriors Blue. The conditions didn’t seem to bother the players though. Warriors started hard and fast at the first whistle keeping the ball in their forward half and putting the goalie to work blocking a few attempts. Torrens Valley quickly warmed up though and snuck one past Warriors players. Torrens Valley C.Mugford shot for goal slipped past Warriors goalie B.Bevan and scored the first goal for the game at the 3-minute mark. Warriors responding with S.Cotton hitting one to the back of the net and scoring Warriors first goal only 2 minutes later. Both teams seemed to be well matched with lots of tussles for the ball. Goalies at both ends had their work cut out for them but both were working hard and stopping the many attempts at goal. Warriors defence J.Lunnon and M.Burroughes covering lots of ground and applying pressure to Torrens players on the run. O.Boerth picking up those that got passed. M.Burroughes went down with a knee injury and after being carried off left Warriors one player down on the pitch. That wasn’t enough to stop Warriors though and with determination they pushed through. Well placed pass from M.Davis set D.Silvestri up for Warriors second goal only 2 minutes before the whistle for half time. Half time score was Warriors 2 Torrens 1. In the break, Torrens coach checked on Warriors injured player and decided to also play with one less player to even the playing field (great sportsmanship). Both teams started the second half with fires in their bellies and determination on their faces. Great plays were seen by both sides and the goalies were kept on their toes with many attempts at goal had by both sides. Some great saves were witnessed and had spectators roaring on both sides cheering both teams on. M.Burroughes felt ok to get back in the game and Torrens put their extra player back out there also. Warriors P.Thomas was standing strong in forward and was in there with the play working with her teammates M.Olsson and E.Moylan trying to keep it at their goal and slip it into the net but was met with the brilliant goal keeping from Torrens. Play seemed to be locked in a constant back and forth with players on both teams working hard and never giving up. Warriors goalie M.Olsson blocking every attempt and saved some great shots at goal but Torrens N.Witter managed to sneak one passed and scored the only goal for the second half with only a few minutes to go in the game. Warriors played their hearts out and never once gave up, very proud of all of them. At the final whistle the scores were tied at 2 all. Was some great football played by all players and was certainly a great game for the spectators to watch. Well done to both teams.
