Match report
Woodside U13 Blue headed down to Strathalbyn for this week’s feature. An early 9am start on a beautiful mild morning in perfect conditions saw the game get underway. The Warriors had a number of mid-week injuries that led to a shuffling of the team which featured a new starting line up of Sam Colla in defense and Matt Hacquoil in right midfield starting their first game. The Warriors started the game positively, and were on the scoresheet within the first 2 minutes thanks to a wonderful strike from Rojo Nambiar. The Warrior’s midfield kept the pressure on Strath through Elliot Klein and Jordan Virgara who, for the second week played a higher attacking role which provided a lot of acceleration to the forward line. Xavier Varelias continued his run of good form and also opened his account for the day shortly after. Nambiar notched up his second goal thanks to the great midfield supply and Klein, Virgara and Josh Constable all rattled the net imposing enormous pressure on Strath’s defenders. Strath who fought hard, launched a number of counter attacks which were negated by the ever reliable Deagen Arnold. Luke Somes absorbed some pressure movements and successfully held up the Strath attackers to allow for the reinforcements through Charlie Knipe and Troy Murray to help mop up any potential threat to the Warrior’s goals. Murray moved the ball impressively out of defense and debutant Hacquoil carried the ball dangerously up the wing to provide the Warriors’s forward with constant opportunities. Noah Frahn, the Strath keeper did a superb job in keeping and expertly stopped many waves of attacks from the very hungry Warriors strikers. Axel Vassos, the Warrior’s keeper watched his reps team mate Frahn from the Warriors goals and was lucky to not have too many scary moments and successfully mopped up any Strath attacking attempts. Knipe playing her first game for the Warriors, calmy intercepted the Strath strikers and allowed relentless forward press back into the Warrior’s attacking half. The Warrior’s corner and crossing delivery was near perfect and it was no surprise that this led to a number of great chances deep into Strath’s penalty area. Josh Constable secured his first header for the year much to the elation of the Warrior’s coach Jason Vassos who noted that it was a long time coming after the practice that Constable had put into achieving this milestone. The end of the match resulted with Nambia, Klein and Constable each registering hattricks which contributed to a resounding victory and a testament to a very well rounded team effort.
