Match report

Round 5 of the AHJFA U13 league had Woodside Warriors Red heading down the slopes to face the young but dangerous Strathalbyn Strikers in what promised to be a tight and enthralling encounter. Unfortunately for Woodside, Covid, state trials and injury had their regular lineup reduced to 9 players, a number that was slightly bolstered to 10 at the last minute by a brave U12 goalkeeper who stepped forward to take the challenge.

An early goal from Strath after just a few minutes caught Woodside off guard when a rolling ball deflected off the keeper and crossed the line. But Woodside rallied immediately, striking back within minutes to balance the ledger. From there the game seesawed with both sides creating opportunities but unable to capitalise. And so the game hung precariously in the balance, as both sides desperately strived to show their mettle. With one less on the park and no chance of a rest for the young Warriors, their legs began to tire and space began to open up. But Woodside was full of resolve and goaled next, scoring through a brilliant run down the right and a clean finish. But the excessive workload was slowly taking its toll as the young Warriors became unable to finish the chase and apply pressure – On the stroke of half-time Strath kicked the equalizer.

The second half proved a bridge too far for the tired Warriors, but not for a lack of trying! Within a short period many were out on the feet, and the talented Strath Strikers took full advantage of the time and space they were being afforded. This led to a flurry of goals in the middle of the second half and ensured that Strath would be the victors, but in a show of shear grit and determination the ten Woodside Warriors on the park stood up and defended their lives out. Thus, they stemmed the flow in the final ten minutes and so walked of the field with their pride well and truly in-tact.

Congrats to Strath on a well-deserved win! A bright season awaits…
