Woodside Warriors Soccer Club Red vs Nairne Knights Soccer Club

U8 - Round 5- 27/5/2023

Nairne Vs Woodside Warriors Red

Nairne – 9:00am

We're back, and the everyone was obviously quite excited for this week's match as they lined up after having last weekend off.  Although there was a some rain about, the boys were ready to rumble.

Our first half got off to a fast start with a flurry of shots on goal, many of which were successful. Jesse was able to keep the ball moving forwards and give the forwards possession by making a few breakaway runs through the midfield.  It was impressive to see how we maintained our defensive positions despite the lack of action in the back half.  This guaranteed any forward moves from the opponent were stopped before they could turn into anything serious.  It also left our forward line open to allow the ball to be moved freely creating so much dangerous play.

This week's goalies were once again rather quiet, but Owen and Daniel were able to stay focused and weren't taking any chances with anything going past them.  It was encouraging to hear them giving instructions to the defenders and midfielders from between the posts.  Letting them know if they had moved out of place & setting them up to ensure there were no gaps for the opposition to get through.

In order to generate strong attacking options, the team's focus in the second half was passing the ball and moving to dangerous areas. In just a few games, Freddie, Eddie, and Owen have all made significant progress & today being the target of plenty of offensive plays. Working hard through the midfield and up forward, Scott, Nathaniel, Archer, and Mitch are providing plenty of ball to the top of the square allowing the forwards to do their thing. Another great performance boys. Its good to see some of the team plays starting to come together.

Hahndorf Soccer Club vs Strathalbyn Strikers FC Inc

With kick-off at a much more civilised time this week, the game started with the teams battling in the mid-field. Strathalbyn managed to push the ball forward, but it was then stolen by Brooklyn Karamanov who dribbled it down and finished with a great kick, scoring the first goal of the game. A strong throw in by Eric Jager led to a great shot on goal by Carter Karamanov, stopped by an excellent save from the Strathalbyn keeper.

Strathalbyn went on the offensive, leading to a good save by Hahndorf’s keeper Will Neelawala. This was followed up by another close attempt on goal by Hahndorf, unfortunately from just inside the box. Strathalbyn pushed forward again but Hahndorf defence folded in with Kealan Atkinson stopping their progress. A big defensive kick by Jager ended up with Zeek Neelawala who brought it down to Hahndorf’s end. Great passing by Z. Neelawala across to C. Karamanov and onto captain Charlie Kilpatrick finished with a shot on goal saved by the skilful keeper.

Strathalbyn pushed forward again, this time finishing off with a great kick into the back of the net. Erupting cheers broke out on the pitch and along the sidelines in celebration. At the next Strathalbyn throw in, a header by Jager was followed up with some great defence. Z. Neelawala made a steal and brought the ball down for a great shot on goal, again saved by the Strathalbyn keeper.

Starting the second half, an early shot by Strathalbyn was saved by Z. Neelawala who had moved into goals. Some tough battles in the mid-field were followed up with great passing by Atkinson. Strathalbyn drove the ball forward and despite some awesome defence by Kilpatrick, Strathalbyn pushed on and kicked it past the keeper, unfortunately from just inside the box. They continued to attack, with another strong kick at goal expertly saved by Z. Neelawala. Another powerful kick at goal soon after went just down the side.

Fighting back, C. Karamanov showed great control bringing the ball down for a shot at goal. W. Neelawala, Jager and Atkinson were putting the defensive pressure on, with Z. Neelawala making another excellent save. W. Neelawala took a great run down the pitch with a tackle pushing the ball out of play. The throw in taken by W. Neelawala made its way to B. Karamanov who didn’t waste any time, kicking a goal in the last couple of minutes of the game.

Woodside Warriors Soccer Club Gold vs F.C Summit White

For the first half Woodside Gold and Summit were evenly matched with no team able to score. Toby Reichmann as goalkeeper pulled off some brilliant saves to keep Gold in the match. Toby Smith, Charlie Dvorak and the ever-improving Ashley Hendrie made Summit's keeper come up with some saves but plenty of other shots went wide of the small-sized goals.

The ball was whizzing up and down the field and all Gold players were challenging for it in a fine team effort.

Midway through the second half Summit broke the deadlock with an amazing sharp-angled strike from their State League player in Harvey Fairhead. Despite this, Gold continued to press  with Mason Payne and Jack Hogan getting plenty of kicks through the midfield. Jo Smith put in some threatening runs down the right only to see his shots go wide. Stefan Sims as goalkeeper was becoming more busy as Summit pressed forward with a barrage of shots on goal and in the dying minutes they hit the back of the net.

This was the first game this season that Gold failed to score but what is encouraging is that they had lots of chances to do so.

Hahndorf Soccer Club Black vs Stirling Districts Soccer Club Blue

Hahndorf’s U9 Black team took on Stirling Districts Blue at Mylor oval on Saturday morning.
The game got off to a flying start, with goals coming in quick succession scored by Michael Griggs and Miles Hennessy.

When Stirling were able to push the ball forward, Hahndorf defenders Angus Clifton, Charlie Roeszler and goalkeeper Harris Parkyn had them covered. Some fancy footwork and great communication were used to get the ball back into Hahndorfs attacking half. The sun shining at all the right moments, including when Hamish Glynn received a beautiful pass from Hennessy to score a fantastic goal.

Stirling kept up a great defensive game and their hard work paid off taking a high shot at goal soaring the ball over Parkyn’s out stretched arms. Leo Davies and Saxon Sulskis worked hard through the midfield and back line which then saw further goals scored by Griggs and Hennessy.

Kicking off the second half was a great goal save by Griggs, followed by some goal box confusion. Clifton pulled out some fancy footwork to push the ball forward.
Parkyn & Roeszler fought hard for the hotly contested ball in the final few minutes of the game, which came to a triumphant end with a final goal by Hennessy in the dying seconds.

Stirling Districts Soccer Club Blue vs Hahndorf Soccer Club Black

What a stella morning it was on Peramangk land. The rain cleared and held off for our home game at Mylore oval against Hahndorf this morning.

Our U9 Blue team has had a challenging start to the season, playing some very strong teams in the first few rounds. This time, skills were more evenly matched, in spite of some strong goal kicking by Hahndorf.

We had an early shot on goal by our Eloise, which was well defended by our opponents. Fergus successfully blocked many goal attempts as keeper. Some were just too strong for us at this time.

Later in the second half, the team assisted Caleb in securing a spectacular goal straight through the centre line. Well done to all players who assisted in this goal. It was truly amazing to watch.

This was possibly our strongest game so far, with lots of eager tackling and passing to team mates. Some special thanks to Ajay, from the U7 side who stepped in to help us out. We were two down due to illness. Ajay did an amazing job down the left wing, looking completely at ease in the U9 side.

Well done to all!

Special Thanks goes to…………………………………..

Our referee Jon, who stepped up to the job when required. Thanks Jon.

To Rosie for keeping the kids in refreshments and our team under control.

To our coaches Michael and Baptist, who came out in spite of their own children being sick today.

And to all the parents for getting their kids to the game on time today.

Woodside Warriors Soccer Club Blue vs Bridgewater Soccer Club Blue

The Blues were down Hamish and Gage for this home game, with only 1 sub. But Bridgewater were down a few players and only just making 6 a side with a latecomer to the game. Caleb Ryan stepping up and offering to help out saw him playing against his team in the first half and both teams with 7 a side. He proved to be a valuable asset for Bridgewater and scored his first goal for the season against the Blues. A bittersweet moment, but certainly one to feel proud of.

Great plays were emerging from the Blues attacking players early on with multiple passess and back to back shots on goal. Bridgewater struggled to get out of the defensive postiion for most of the first half.

Highlights were seeing the Blues set up their plays from midfield and making multiple passes accross centre to score. Adam Masters showing his determination early on with several shots at goal resulting in a few wins for the Blues.

Will Highson snuck in a quick goal from a throw in.

Liam Harding showed off his teamwork and strategic skills with excellent passes as well as a few shots at goal himself.

Solid defending from Daniel Ebdell in the first half. Team mate Caleb experiencing what it's like to be on the recieving end of his big boot and copping a ball to the face for Bridgewater. Bridgewater didnt manage to break through in the first half and the Blues went to the sidelines feeling confident at halftime.

Will Highson stepped up and crossed over to Bridgewater for the second half.

Bridgewater developed a more solid attack in the second half, breaking through the Blues defence to make a number of attempts at goal. Daniel as goalie, disappointed that a few managed to sneak through from very solid kicks, but mutlpule saves were had.

The Blues stepped up in the midfield with Ryland defending hard and making some break throughs for the team.

The second half saw Liam convert one of his many attenpts into his first goal for the game, followed soon after by his second. More excellent passing from Liam this half, resulting in goals from Quinn and Adam.

Another solid game for the Blues!

Woodside Warriors Soccer Club Red vs Bridgewater Soccer Club Blue

It was an exciting game for the Under 10's this week. Bridgewater kept us on our toes throughout the match but we managed another win.

Aussie was on fire with his attack and goal scoring, Justin got one in for the team too. Max and Bobby worked hard to keep the ball down at Bridgewater's Goals which supported our goal kickers. Our mid-fielders Ilkoo, Banjo and Eva were kept busy running back and forth keeping the Bridewater players on their toes. Our defence members Zac and Ryder kicked a few balls far and high away from our goals, while Hannah and Theo moved the ball around on the ground and up the line.

Our Goalies this week were Ryder and Theo. They did a fabulous job and saved many goal attempts by Bridgewater. They all deserved their fresh oranges at half time, and lollies at the end. Can't wait to see what next week brings.

Woodside Warriors Soccer Club Red vs Stirling Districts Soccer Club

It was a cold drizzly morning at Woodside for the U11's this week. Stirling came out of the gates with an early, a goal from a well-placed ball high into the back of the net got them on the board. Woodside used this to fuel their fire and spur them on, with first time goal kickers Miller and Harley contributing one each, and Sam and Griffin also adding to Woodside’s first half tally of four.

Stirling tried valiantly to counter the attack they had endured in the first half but a strong team defence by Woodside held them to just two goals for the game. Woodside’s ability to work together in both attack and defence was commendable especially considering the soaking they received throughout the game, and the fact that they had no one on the bench to give tired legs a rest. Great work Woodside Warriors.

U12

Stirling Districts Soccer Club Blue (4) vs Murray Bridge United Soccer Club (1)

A cold and early morning start for these two teams. As the whistle blew to start off the match Alex Wilson took his energy to score the first goal of the game with a swift kick from the left hand side to land straight into the back of the net in the first minute.

From there both teams were evenly playing across the field both defending and attacking with skill and agility. An unfortunate own own goal at the goal line had the teams level for the half time break. And then the rain started to show just how much colder the game could get.

A quick break and wise words from the coach had Stirling Districts fighting for their goals again. The tries for goal kept raining in with the back of the net found by Rigby Barnes in the 47th minute. From there Stirling found their feet and the back of the net in quick succession with another goal from Alex Wilson in the 51st minute.

With constant pressure from the defending team and constant pushing forward Aidan Kirby secured the last goal in the last minute of the game.

Thanks Murray Bridge for doing the time in your cars to come and visit us at Stirling Districts home ground - we can't wait to see you next time!

U13

Hahndorf Soccer Club (2) vs Murray Bridge United Soccer Club (0)

The Hahndorf Under 13 team played Murray Bridge at the Summit stadium this round and played a strong game winning the match 2-0.

The weather was sharp from the opening whistle, and we saw strong play from the Hahndorf attack with Eli Parkin, and Emlyn Gilroy making strong attempts and the first goal of the game from Lawson Shotton. Jackson Bidgood was in goals for the duration of the match and successfully defended multiple shots from the Murray Bridge attack. The Hahndorf defence was well supported by a strong game from Chris Haynes as well as good play from Louis Moran.

In the second half of the game the weather turned to an icy drizzle. Both teams continued to play valiantly, including Ashton Broadbent who split the defence to deliver Shotton the ball for his second goal of the match. Leaving Hahndorf with the 2-0 victory for the round.

U15

Willunga Phoenix Soccer Club (5) vs Hahndorf Soccer Club (6)

Fantastic back & forward game with lots of goals & exciting passages of play - it looked liked Hahndorf would run away with it when they scored the first 3 goals of the second half, but Phoenix fought back to lose by only a single goal. Well played to both teams!

Woodside Warriors Soccer Club Blue (3) vs Murray Bridge United Soccer Club (2)

Depending on your point of view, the Round 5 thriller between Woodside Warriors U15 and Murray Bridge United was either delight in the dying minute or despair at the death.

For the first ten minutes of the match, Woodside appeared to be in complete control of this one, creating five shots on target, only to be denied by some of the best goal keeping you’ll see in junior football. And despite the relentless pressure, the Bridge backmen clearly had no intention of backing down. Results may not have gone their way in recent weeks, but it is clearly not from a lack of will. Every single player in a yellow shirt fought desperately to protect their nest, covering one another when beaten and haring back with impressive speed to save the day and prevent further shots on goal. In football, it is the accumulation of these smaller, oft-overlooked acts that create a true team performance. And before long, Bridge had found a way forward and were lining up a corner for their first real chance of the day. They went low and hard, sneaking the ball into the six yard box, before a deflected ball bobbled up and was headed from waste-height between two defenders. Somehow, they’d done it! After absorbing a black hole of pressure, they were ahead – And their blood was up! But Woodside responded in the way we have come to expect, resuming the pass-move style of play that had established their early dominance. It took another three attempts for them to find the back of the net, when their center back stepped up to nod one home from a corner on the twenty-minute mark. This threatened to relieve the pressure for Woodside and open the floodgates, but Bridge were having none of it, continuing to scramble in defence while the goal-keeper kept up his show. And so we went into half-time with the game locked at one goal a-piece.

Again, Woodside jumped out of the blocks in the second term, with the Bridge gloveman put to work in the opening minute of play. But again, it was Bridge who hit the scorecard early. And again, Woodside found themselves behind, despite enjoying a sound advantage of territory and possession. This was testing the nerves of the home crowd, who were both astounded and infuriated by a keeper who is winning more admirers with every performance. But you can’t save them all and finally, after 54 minutes of play, Woodside’s left wing sent one into the onion bag on his umpteenth attempt of the day, to bring the scores level… Twenty-six minutes were left on the clock… Woodside were dominating, but Bridge were keeping them out... Who would break the deadlock? With twenty left to play, Bridge created another opportunity, driving one on target. But the Woodside keeper got his mitts in the way. Woodside then missed from a free kick with ten minutes left. And the clock ticked on... With each defensive effort and every miraculous save, Bridge looked certain to hang on, until… With a minute left to play, Woodside surged forward for one last chance. Surely Bridge could keep them out one final time. The ball was played through the line, Woodside’s striker got there first, the keeper came forward, and the ball was struck with precision and grace to curl past the gloves and stretch the net in that glorious and elegant way that it does. This brought elation for the Warriors, but it was a bitter pill for the visitors, who had given every ounce of themselves to get the result.

When the ref brought a close to proceedings, Bridge were gutted. Their disappointment was palpable, but they should surely carry their heads high. Not only did they fight like lions protecting their pride, their structural discipline was also impressive, and will carry them to any destination they crave, if only they can keep the faith. For the Warriors, it was relieved elation that should now provide a springboard as they move forward with new-found confidence.

Hahndorf Soccer Club (6) vs Willunga Phoenix Soccer Club (5)

It is a crisp morning as the mighty magpies take on the majestic Wine flies in the picturesque Willunga oval. Official attendance 46 and two dogs, which is not bad considering we are right next door to the Willunga markets with such temptation as hand rolled french pastries and the aroma of barista made  coffee and  bacon and egg rolls floats across the oval.

Sorry I lost myself for a moment. Back to the soccer
And we are underway with hahndorf winning the toss and shooting to the Southern end. Jet Zahra is tripped and earns a penalty in the first few minutes but narrowly misses to the left. Zahra has another shot at goal a few minutes later but this time misses to the right. And another by Zahra and misses to the right. No 8 for Willunga strikes and flies over the cross bar, and another shot that is well saved by the keeper. Fourth time lucky for Zahra as he stretches to score the first goal of the game. Levi Beesley narrowly misses to the right then Luciann Tinsley-Smith's shot is saved. Beesley strikes strongly but is saved. No 3 for Willunga runs half way down the pitch and scores. Zahra has scored another goal after a spilled save by the goalkeeper. Beesley nearly scores just misses to the left. Again a great strike by Levi is saved. Zahra has another shot at goal that is saved. Cooper Liddle shoots and misses to the right. Another good save by hahndorf goalkeeper Hayden Lien. Joash Ng shoots from long range and narrowly misses to the right. Harrison Gould strikes but is saved. Isaac Bonilla-Killey shoots and is saved. 28 from Willunga scores and It's all tied up at 2 all. Beesley shoots but well saved. Ng runs and shoots but well saved again. Another good save by Lien. And that's half time folks in a fast paced entertaining first half.

And the second is underway as the sun begins to shine. Liddle scored the opening goal after a spilled ball from the keeper. Good aggression by Tinsley-Smith as she hip and shoulders no 3. Ng strikes and is well saved by Willunga goalkeeper. Ng scores a great goal flying past the goalkeeper. Great strike by Gould and an even better save by the Willunga goalkeeper. Ng shoots and misses to the right. Zahra shoots a powerful goal. And Ng shoots and misses again to the right. Liddle shoots and its well saved. Good save by Beesley who is now in goals. Ng shoots wildly and narrowly slides over the cross bar. Great defending by Bonilla-Killey all day saves another goal. Good save by Beesley. Great defending by Angus Mufsud saves a certain goal. Tinsley-Smith and Zahra both take shots at goal in a frenetic minute of soccer. No 3 for Willunga scores a good goal. Gould strikes well but is denied by the keeper. Spectacular run down the wing finishing in a goal. Misfud (the ROCK) solid in defence again saves a goal. 15 for Willunga scores. Gould strikes well but hits the right post.
Ng shoots but well saved again. Great save by Beesley in goals. No 8 for Willunga scores a good goal. And that's the end of an entertaining game that sees Hahndorf take the win 6 goals to 5.

Hahndorf Soccer Club (0) vs Woodside Warriors Soccer Club Blue (6)

The Hahndorf under 17 team put in a valiant effort to lose 6-0 to the Woodside Blue team at the Summit sports ground in Mount Barker.

Starting with only 10 players, Hahndorf took up the attack and Toby Thomas had an early attempt on goal which was saved by Woodside. Despite some excellent goal keeping from Tom Boekel, Woodside managed to score 2 goals in the first half. Rhys Davies and Oliver Combe both did an excellent job in defence. They were all over the field, with Davies repeatedly chasing down attacks from Woodside’s players. Oscar Johnson and Mitchell Stribley provided solid support in the midfield, intercepting and putting pressure on the opposition. From 20 minutes in, Hahndorf now with their full complement of 11 players were strong in defence and managed a number of unsuccessful attacks on goal, including by Toby Thomas, Lewis Johnson and Nicholas Brown.

The second half started with 3 quick goals from Woodside as they repeatedly broke through Hahndorf’s defence. Hahndorf responded with multiple unsuccessful attacks led by Thomas, Zara Tinsley-Smith, Charlie Zorkovic and Stefan Panic. A final goal to Woodside late in the second half brought the score to 6-0. The skillful save of a penalty by Boekel prevented a further goal in the dying minutes of the game.

Hahndorf played well but were outplayed on the day. Congratulations to Woodside Blue on their win.

Woodside Warriors Soccer Club Blue (6) vs Hahndorf Soccer Club (0)

A last minute change to the schedule saw Woodside Blue head out to the Summit on Saturday morning to play Hahndorf's U17's for their first encounter this season. With Hahndorf starting the game with 10 players, Woodside matched those numbers and put an extra player on their bench.

Both teams started fairly strongly, with a fast initial attack from Hahndorf, which was saved by Woodside's keeper. This was countered fairly quickly by Woodside, with the team playing the ball down the pitch for the first goal of the match from Melville at the 4th minute mark.  He knocked in his second goal by 10 minutes, however that would be the last score for the first half, despite some speedy runs from Diaz on the right wing and strong mid-field play from Mclean.

After the break Woodside came out firing and for the most part kept the ball in their attacking half.  Franchi in the mid-field seemed to be in the right spot at the right time often and guided the ball back to Woodside's attacking front line. Silvestri, Cotton and Bauer all managed to net one for the game, with valiant efforts also from Johnston and Humphries.

Hahndorf's defence played a strong game overall and didn't give up, although the advantage of players on the bench for Woodside could be seen by the end of the game.

Thanks Hahndorf for a game played in good spirits!

Woodside Warriors Soccer Club Rams (1) vs Strathalbyn Strikers FC Inc (3)

Round 5                    Strathalbyn Strikers VS Woodside Rams

It was another day down on the flats of Strathalbyn, wind was blowing and girls were happy and hungry, I myself was feeling weary, but keen to get into a game.

The girls had a light warm up, but still looked ready to play. We had three ring ins from the Mixed division so our team looked a little different than normal.

Our mid field our forwards and our base line was looking different, and the squad from strath was looking like normal to an untrained outsider eye.

Game began and it was looking close our goalie had made some good saves and like wise the Strath goalie also made a bunch of saves.

Strath had the ball in our defensive  end and  were looking organised like they were setting up a play they had practiced. Oh no a pass back and fired upon Strath had their first breakthrough, our goalie looking absolutely devastated.

A change was made to Woodside and our attacking line was looking a little more threatening. Return fire was taken and scores were back level. Minutes later we thought it was going to happen again, but the Strath goalie was in a class of her own defending the one on one attack.

Second half was here and scores were tied. looking like we might have a chance of keeping our winning streak going. We now were playing into the wind and we could definitely see the legs of the girls were starting to tire.

It was late in the half and scores were still level, but then a lucky goal from a forward press and Strath were in the lead.

Woodside Rams were not going down quietly though. It felt like 10 corners down our attacking end, and all attempts just missing by the near side of the goal, but no equaliser then 1 minute was left and Strath got a ball past the half way and broke free made a beautiful cross and scored a perfect play again.

The siren went and Strath were the victors this time around.

Stirling Districts Soccer Club (3) vs Mount Barker United Soccer Club Red (1)

Cool and overcast, SDFC were running with a good breeze in H1. Despite this it was tough going with the Barker midfield and defence proving nearly impenetrable and its goalkeeper only getting light work for much of the early stages and most of the battle being confined to the midfield. In reply Barker were able launch some good but less frequent attacks. Most of these were easily covered. One however resulted in a good goal with two attackers and a lone defender leaving the SDFC goalkeeper stranded on the goal line and Barker’s striker taking a well-aimed and executed shot to the low LH corner. Stung by the deficit SDFC managed to achieve more penetration into Barker’s 18-yard box and one such occasion hit the mark. 1-1 at half time.

The second half saw a well-balanced match with both sides making good attacks against the other. SDFC, into the breeze, achieving this mostly with higher numbers while Barker, running with the breeze, typically more high paced entries involving just a handful of players. Sustained pressure and a high work rate saw SDFC force two more hard won goals. Barker however were left rue what might have been with three excellent one-on-one chances against SDFC’s keeper pushed just wide on each occasion.
