Hahndorf Soccer Club vs Bridgewater Soccer Club White

The Hahndorf Under 8’s soccer team put on a strong effort against Bridgewater on Saturday morning.

It was a crisp overcast morning in Hahndorf, making for perfect game conditions.  Hahndorf kicked off, Hamish Glynn and Jasper Christou were quick to let the opposition know they meant business by persistently working the ball towards and into the Bridgewater frontline.

Hugo Dahmke and Michael Griggs kept the pressure on the Bridgewater back line by manoeuvring the ball swiftly between them. Taking the ball from the half way mark up and into position for Hugo to take a shot at goals. The powerful kick was too much for the Bridgewater goalie, giving Hahndorf their first goal. Carter Hartley in goals saved many strong attempts, and holding Bridgewater scoreless at the half time whistle.

During the second half Angus Clifton’s determination and never give up skill work kept many attacks from Bridgewater from being converted.  The great trio team work, of Paddy Coffey, Samuel Gardener and Fernando Palma tirelessly kept running the ball into the Hahndorf forward line, as Brooklyn Rohde and Carter were able to push the ball forward on many occasions.

Michael positioned in goal was kept busy with the ever persistent Bridgwater forward line and was able to level the match just before full time.

Both teams played with great spirit, fun and teamwork, providing the supporters with a great game to watch.

Woodside Warriors Soccer Club Red vs Hahndorf Soccer Club

The Woodside Warriors under 9s played Hahndorf for the first time. It was a challenging game with many battles had between both teams.
Referee Josh Stewart took control of the heated game with some time outs to sort out disagreements.
By half time it was clear there was a battle to be had and spectators were impressed with the outstanding performances by the defence and miraculous saves by the goalies! Arlo Areamkaew managed a kick save while in goal which had everyone applauding.
Both sides displayed remarkable skills in attack with sublime passing and technical footwork.
It was an exceptional game to watch and the Warriors really lived up to their name.

Hahndorf Soccer Club vs Woodside Warriors Soccer Club Red

It was a tight u9s Round 6 battle between Hahndorf and Woodside Red at Woodside Oval. It was a closely fought battle right from the first kick off.  A strong defensive effort by the whole team, with great goalkeeping by Oliver Knight, in the first half kept Woodside to one goal.  Both teams were evenly matched and  Hahndorf had chances.  Hugo Curtis and Thomas Gould played solidly in the mid-field, blocking and pushing forward. Levi Neumann, Joshua Blain and Soren Mickan were strong in attack too, each narrowly missing goals to equalise. Tyson Bancroft and Rowan Gilray played well, defending with good passes and Owen Hoyle found space to help team-mates.

It was Mason Saywell's turn in goals for the second half. His great goalkeeping helped to stop Woodside going further ahead.  Gould was hurt late in the match, which was soon forgotten when from a free kick he kicked a superb goal to level the score.

A great competitive match from both sides, with soccer the winner!

Hahndorf Soccer Club vs Woodside Warriors Soccer Club

Hahndorf hosted Woodside today at home in an 8-8 match. Kick of sent the ball Hahndorf’s end where it bounced around between Lucca Falvo-Lopez, Sol Cootes, Connor Ozolins and Jhett Frost. Woodside’s defence prevented any clear shots on goal. Ozolins lifted the ball to try clear the defence line and a beautiful header was made by Cootes. Frost soon fed the ball to Falvo-Lopez for Hahndorf’s first shot on goal but the opposition goalie’s hands were there. Defenders Simran Singh, Caleb Earley and Cohen Whinfield prevented Woodside from moving the ball much past half way. Ashon Broadbent-Shaw with fresh legs caught a Woodside rebound and put one through the goalies legs. Woodside were hungry now and ventured down towards their goal with ferocity. One attempt went wide, the next saved by Whinfield and the final of the half by a strong Hahndorf defence team.

The second half saw an early attempt by Woodside keeping goalie Lachlan Gardner on his toes. Zack Perkins, fresh out of goals centred a pass to Broadbent-Shaw for another goal attempt. A massive kick by Woodside’s goalie returned the ball to play in the centre before Perkins crossed the ball to Frost for another Shot at the Woodside goalie. Third time lucky and Broadbent-Shaw crosses to Perkins who found the back of the net. Play again returned to Hahndorf’s end with Singh taking a big cross that ended up again in the goalies gloves. A surprise attack by Woodside saw goalie Garner protect the net perfectly and the ball returned to Hahndorf’s end with Broadbent-Shaw’s big kick on goal over ruled by the umpire. In the dying minutes of the game the goalie kick was turned over at the halfway line by Broadbent-Shaw who ran on goals and slotted the final goal of the match. Well done to the Hahndorf boys for a hard fought game.

Woodside Warriors Soccer Club vs Hahndorf Soccer Club

Woodside came up against Hahndorf on Hahndorf’s home ground for round 6.  The players had their work cut out for them with longer halves and narrower goal nets.  The opposition were tough, but Woodside defended well and showed good resilience throughout the match.  Some exciting play occurred in our attacking zone with a couple of cracking shots for goal which only very narrowly missed their mark.

Torrens Valley Soccer Club vs Stirling Districts Soccer Club Blue

A brisk morning at Aldgate Primary School saw Stirling Districts Blue host Torrens Valley. Stirling Districts were quick to show their skills after kick off with a goal attempt early. Another attempt was shortly after displaying Stirling Districts eagerness to get the game going. The ball was slow getting through midfield but eventually did break through for Stirling Districts and giving them a corner. They took the opportunity and showing great skill scored their first goal. The Stirling Districts midfield displayed their skills with some brilliant turns and tackles picking up the tempo about 15 minutes in. Continued pressure from Stirling Districts with two more goal attempts before the half time whistle.

Stirling Districts did not let up in the second half with their midfield players stopping and turning the ball around at each Torrens Valley attempt to get it up to their forwards. Stirling Districts turned the ball around and powered a shot towards goal with a fantastic save from the Torrens Valley keeper. The game slowed once again but Stirling Districts kept the Torrens Valley defence busy, the perseverance paid off with another goal for Stirling Districts. Torrens Valley kept the attack up with a long kick towards goal needing a quick response from the Stirling Districts keeper. Stirling Districts defence was too strong for a final attempt at a goal from Torrens Valley before the final whistle.

Stirling Districts Soccer Club Blue vs Torrens Valley Soccer Club

A great game was expected between these two teams. Although, they hadn't played each other before the warm up sessions being held were a show that both teams had been practicing hard and were ready to go out and play in a fired up match.

With clever foot work and awesome power on field the game was exciting and had the crowd loud and cheering for both teams and their efforts.

Great work from all players and all coaches - it was well worth the watch!

Hahndorf Soccer Club vs Strathalbyn Strikers FC Inc White

The under 11s travelled to Strathalbyn to take on Strath White

Strath White started of the better with the Hahndorf players taking time to adjust to the pressure Strath was putting them under. Strath had more of the ball for the first 10-15 min of the game but Hahndorf’s defence held up well with Jensen Ingram, Sonjae Cook and Edward Bjordal holding up strong. Hahndorf started to get more ball as the game continued with Samuel Whitehead having a great shot at goal, but was stopped by the Strath goalie. This effort seemed to inspire the Hahndorf players. Joel Bateman was able to intercept the ball, dribble half the field avoiding several tackles then scoring a goal, almost against the run of play. Not long after, William Tully in the box passed the ball across the front of the Strath Goalie to Harry Wood who scored the next goal. This took us into half time

The second half saw William (Billy) Cook go into the midfield. This changed the momentum of the game. W Cook along with Nyasha Muradzkwa controlling the ball in the midfield and forward areas, they did not allow Strath to get much ball. This pressure built up on Strath which allowed Bateman to secure the ball at half way, he dribbled the ball then passed it to Jensen who scored the next goal. From here Hahndorf completely controlled the game with Strath having very little time in there forward half. When they did Cooper Newman was there to stop their forward enters, with one great stop with his body. He would then send us back forward. The last goal was the best goal of the season free kick taken by Wood 20m out from goal. With a little push pass to Bateman who blasted it in to the goal. This goal is going to be hard to beat for goal of the year.

Strath played well and pushed our players, but the longer the game went our skill level and passing skills wearied Strath down.

Woodside Warriors Soccer Club (7) vs Stirling Districts Soccer Club White (2)

After a few light showers through the week the Stirling Districts faithful stepped through the high gates of Bradwood Park and onto a damp but firm outfield to watch their young guardsmen defend their home turf. But the Warriors from Woodside had brought a host of Red and Blue fans from across the freeway and were ready to put on a show.

A fine show it was! After some early to-and-fro to feel each other out Woodside gained a sound, if not resounding, advantage – pressing firmly at their opponent’s goal to create the early running. But their accuracy let them down and Stirling clung desperately to the match despite the relentless duress accosting them. Clinging to a match under constant pressure is not an easy thing to do, but the home side showed their mettle, turning back numerous raids to desperately keep their net intact. Eventually they did crack. An emerging star of Hills Football bagged a beautiful goal, that quickly became a brace, as he combined with his mates on successive occasions to push the ball through the defensive line, share possession and finish with poise. The brace soon became a hat-trick, to give him a hat-trick of hat-tricks over the last three weeks (and earn him goal-keeping duties in the second half…). His partner-in-crime shared in the action soon after, overcoming some early “yips” in front of the woodwork, to slide one, and then another, home. But while the front-men were reviling in the accolades, it was the back-men who were grinding it out and underpinning the visiting side’s dominance. Hard work and diligence kept their card clean, team work carried the ball forward, while ambition and flair gave their mates up front time space and to finish the job.

The second half brought a change in fortunes for the home side as they stuck to their task, structured up and backed themselves going forward. Woodside may have looked stronger for the duration of the match, but the locals were far from outclassed. In the second half they matched their guests on the score card by creating two lovely goals and finding a confidence in attack that heralds their future in the comp. Woodside took a well-deserved victory out of the encounter, but there’s a lot of youngsters in this Stirling team, and they’re drinking in the experience of full-field football – priming themselves for a lifetime of success and joy in the Beautiful Game. And when it’s played simply for enjoyment and pleasure, it is The Beautiful Game!

Hahndorf Soccer Club (9) vs Murray Bridge United Soccer Club Blue (3)

For the first time at the new Mt Barker sporting hub and for most of the team it was the first time on a synthetic pitch. The team were full of optimism, the windchill was high, and Mt Barker won the toss.

The game was quick paced, with lots of fancy footwork early. Hahndorf were able to move the ball through and down the pitch, with Gould passing a lovely through shot to Gilroy who capitalised on a rebound shot and converted it to a goal. Hahndorf on the board early.

Hahndorf kept the pressure up, managing the play and keeping the possession down their half, with strong passing, this time to Gould who made a long shot attempt on goal, but was not successful.

Mount Barker were doing what they could to clear the ball, but unable to move it past the centre line, Hahndorf again with quick passing, saw Little take a shot, when it didn’t quite go in, he was well backed up by Lien who took the rebound and converted it to a goal.

Play continued to be dominated by Hahndorf, Mt Barker making a number of good intercepts but unable to move the ball far down the pitch. Play was deep into Hahndorf’s end, resulting in Gould taking 2 corner shots in quick succession.

Hahndorf defensive players – in particular Little and Gilroy were strong in their positions, making sure the ball did not break through.

The next shot for goals was a pass from Gould to Beesley who made sure of the next goal.

With all of the team playing an important role, we saw Haynes, Aylen and Hinze all make great defensive plays, pulling the ball out wide and sending it back down the line for their team mates.

When Mt Barker did break through, with a very quick run to a striker, Shotton and Peters were in hot pursuit and tackled the ball back and sent it straight back to the Hahndorf scoring end. Hahndorf, not able to convert this time, the ball was won back again by Mt Barker and their player Turner was taken on by 5 Hahndorf players, who eventually managed to get the ball back into Hahndorf control. The play was out wide, Gould taking control and passing to Little who converted a great goal from the right side across the face of goals and in.

Lien and Gardner were well tested with tackles too and fro, play moved to Hahndorf’s goal square and when the opportunity presented Gilroy was able to make a quick goal.

Scores 5 – nil at this stage, when the ball did get to the Mt Barker end, our amazing goalie Hill protected the zone and foiled the Mt Barker attempt.

Hill with a big kick out, saw Gilroy take control of the ball in the middle, pass to Gould who made a quick little pass to Lien who was on the move and then shot for goal and succeeded.

Momentum did then shift, late in the first half, seeing Mt Barker press forward, breaking quickly out of the middle, a strong kick to a very fast Mt Barker player, who made a goal and saw Mt Barker now on the board.

This play was repeated, like a carbon copy and Mt Barker now had 2 goals, in very quick succession.

Unlucky for Mt Barker, the half time whistle then went, giving both teams a chance to regroup.

Half time scores; Mt Barker 2 Hahndorf 7

Second half saw Romaldi right in the play with some important intercepts and passes, Beesley, Peters and Shotton needing to all be on top of their game with heavy pressure coming from Mt Barker. Great play by the boys saw Shotton at the top of the box, ready when the kick came to convert another Hahndorf goal, just 3 minutes into the second half.

Next to shine was some great play from Peters, who controlled the ball and space and did a tricky back heel pass to Romaldi who was ready and sent the ball into the goal square but was unlucky not to score. Shotton remained front and centre and in the play, he made a great pass to Lien who made sure the goal went in this time.

Haynes and Hill – who was now out of goals and in the middle making a strong impact, moved the ball through the middle, sending the ball down to a well positioned Shotton who took a spectacular shot from the top of the goal square and converted yet another goal.

Mt Barker continued to pressure Hahndorf, the score board didn’t reflect the effort of their team, they were great at intercepting and remained focused with high energy. Mt Barker did make a break through shot, but were not able to get the ball past the strong defence of Romaldi, who was ready and didn’t waiver.

Play seemed to slow a little at this stage, the ball moving back and forth, nobody able to clear it sufficiently until Beesley was able to capitalise on a moment, but sadly not able to make the goal, quickly followed by Little taking another shot on goal, but Mt Barker were able to defend.

Hahndorf were again rewarded for their efforts when Gilroy took control after a hard fought tackle for possession and converted a goal.

Mt Barker, digging deep, managed to get through a strong defensive line seeing their player Turner convert a goal.

Mt Barker with some spring in their step, passed to their strong player Turner who almost broke free, however Hill managed to stop him in his tracks and get the ball back in Hahndorf control and back down to the Hahndorf end. Contributions from Gould, Peters, Hinze, Aylen and Shotton all moving well with the ball but not able to convert.

With the ball out of play, Gould took prime position to make a corner shot, indicating that he would shoot for goal, he connected well with the ball, that hit the near side pole and unfortunately ricocheted straight into a Mt Barker player. Luckily for Hahndorf, the ball moved out of the playing field and Gould was again lined up to take the corner shot. Gould with 2 corner shots this year already, indicated for the goal and connected well with the ball, that speared through the air and went into the goals.

This saw the Hahndorf team really moving their play, continuing to press forward, poor Man not seeing much action from the Mt Barker team down in their goals. Next to make a goal was Haynes who was quick in the pack and converted.   Then Beesley taking a shot, that first hit the cross bar, he was quick to keep control of play and sent the ball back in, this time making the goal. Hill, still making his mark on the game, joined the goal kickers – attempted a goal, that was well defended by Mt Barker.

Mt Barker were then able to make a break when Turner and Gould tackled, but Turner broke free and ran on to make a shot for goal. Well done to Man who did not let it past!

Last to make a shot on goal was Beesley, sadly it didn’t quite go in as the final whistle went, ending the Hahndorf run.

Mount Barker United Soccer Club (8) vs Nairne Knights Soccer Club (2)

A cloudy, brisk and fresh morning greeted players and spectators at the new Summit Sports and Recreation Park. This was the first time both teams had played at this magnificent facility and what a treat it was shaping up to be. The full sized pitch was surely going to create a lot of room for both teams to display their skills and test their fitness.

Mount Barker were coming off a 3 game winning streak and Nairne were keen to get their season underway and take the points.

The game started with both teams passing the ball around well. Each team was adjusting to the new surface and possession often changed hands. Mount Barker started to settle and press the ball forward. Mount Barkers striker, Archer Hawkins took numerous shots on target but each was successfully dealt with by the Nairne keeper. Eventually something had to give and after a period of relentless pressure, Mount Barker found the back of the net at the 13th minute with a well-timed shot by Mount Barker striker, Archer Hawkins.

This goal was quickly followed by another 2 mins later by Archer Hawkins and Mount Barker were 2 to the good at the 15th minute. The game threatened to get away from Nairne.

The game now settled into a see-sawing affair with Nairne finding their rythm. The game swung end to end with both teams penetrating the oppositions defences. The players were beginning to find their space on the large pitch. Nairne begun to string a succession of passes and hold their shape. At the 29th min they opened their account with a well-earned goal by #8 Mitchell Stribley. Nairne lifted and only 2 mins later were rewarded with a penalty.  #31 Ned Morgan confidently strode up to the spot and claimed a solid goal at the 31min mark. This leveled the score at 2 all and Nairne had their backs up!

This seemed to sting Mount Barker back into action. They began to hold their mid-field shape and after a lovely combination of passes, Remarni Puiatti slotted a killer pass onto a flying Rupert Curran who deftly slotted pass the keeper to take the score to 3-2 on the stroke of half-time.

Half Time Mount Barker 3 - Nairne 2

At the second half kick-off Mount Barker quickly pressed and took possession deep into the Nairne half. It wasn't long before Mount Barker's Centre Midfielder, #22 Beau Riddle began to find space and he was rewarded with an early goal. From the ensuing kickoff Mount Barker took possession and pressed hard. Another goal by Beau Riddle and Mount Barker were surging at 5-2.

Nairne were valiant and competed hard, they certainly were not going down without a fight. The large pitch was starting to expose some players fitness levels and opportunities were being explored by both teams. However it was Mount Barker who began to dominate field position and hold their structure. After a good lead up period a lovely ball was slotted through the Nairne defence and Archer Hawkins pounced, bagging a hat-trick at the 49th min. 6-2

With players beginning to tire, Mount Barker brought on fresh legs. This had an immediate effect with Mount Barkers Lawson Handley playing on the left wing beginning to find space out wide. A clean shot by Lawson found the net and the game was slipping from Nairnes grasp. 7-2

With players tiring the game began to open up. Mount Barkers defensive line pushed forward to increase their numbers. A clearing kick from Nairne rolled toward Mount Barkers cente back, Liam Hawkins, who took an opportunistic long range shot. The ball sailed long, high and true and the back peddling Nairne keeper could do little but watch it sail into the net.

At fulltime Mount Baker took the game 8 - 2. Nairne were valiant in defeat and played with heart and determination. Nairne certainly made Mount Barker earn their points.

Next week Mount Barker take on Strathalbyn at the Strath Polo Grounds and Nairne will line up against Torrens Valley at Birdwood.

Hahndorf Soccer Club White (3) vs Stirling Districts Soccer Club (5)

Hahndorf U13 v Stirling District U13

It was an overcast morning when each team took to the field for what turned out to be an engaging game for spectators. Pepe Zahra kicked off the beginning of a fast-paced first half and Stirling District were quick to demonstrate good passing that led to the first pressure on Diesel Aho in goal to achieve a good save early in the game.  Hahndorf also kept pressure on the opposition throughout the first half which was well defended by Stirling District. The defence line was eventually overcome by the opposition when Samuel Muffet from Stirling District scored the first goal for the opposing team. Joash Ng soon followed this up with Hahndorf’s first goal despite solid efforts by Stirling District’s defence line. Jet Zahra demonstrated some fancy footwork and kept the pressure on the oppositions defence line and Angus Mifsud managed a huge kick from the back half to the goal square that was solidly stopped by the opposition goalie. J Zahra pushed on hard to just miss another attempt on goal, which was closely followed by Ng’s second goal for the home team. Luca Cannavo kept the pressure on the oppositions front and mid lines and Liam Sickerdick and P Zahra displayed solid efforts with teamwork. Blane Balcom and Logan Maxwell put in solid efforts to keep the ball in play and away from the home team goal. Sickerdick kicked a great cross that was well defended by Stirling District’s goalie. The opposition’s, Taj Gore, equalized the game and this was quickly followed by a third goal by John Hewitt for Stirling District. Oliver Dahmke took a fall following excellent tackling efforts and managed to shake it off quickly to get back in the game.  A fourth goal was accomplished by Joshua Verryt despite solid efforts made by the home defence team. The score at half time was 2 – 4 for Stirling District.

The opposition kept up the high pressure on goals from the start of the second half and Aho was put to the test. Hahndorf’s defence were working well together and numerous goal attempts were stopped in their tracks. Hahndorf worked hard at moving the ball to the other end and this was eventually rewarded with a third goal for Hahndorf by Ryley Neumann assisted by Dahmke and Ng. Will Viller played his first game for the team and displayed a willing attitude to get amongst the tackles and managed several clearing kicks. Reilly Bowden also put in solid efforts whenever he was near the ball. Harry Mumford kept pressure on the Stirling District defence line and Balcom made an attempt at goal that was well-saved by the opposition goalie. The opposition scored a fifth goal and Hahndorf continued to work hard at moving the ball up the pitch. Stirling District kept the pressure on the Hahndorf defence line with Aho displaying excellent skills as a goalie, stopping most attempts made in the second half. Overall, both teams seemed evenly matched and put in excellent efforts throughout the game with a final score of 3 – 5 to Stirling District.

Blackwood Forest Soccer Club (5) vs Hahndorf Soccer Club (4)

Blackwood hosted Hahndorf at their home ground of Springbank Secondary College with kick off at 10am.

The teams displayed an eagerness for the ball right from kick off. It was passed frequently between the teams, travelling up and down the pitch in the opening 9 minutes, before Blackwood's Ben A captured the ball in midfield and dribbled it through the Hahndorf defence for an early goal. A few minutes later Liam D received the ball from a Blackwood corner, passing to Elisha S who added a second to their tally. Hahndorf responded immediately, sending the ball into their attacking half, only to be shut down by Blackwood at the last moment. Blackwood soon had another opportunity from a corner, but Hahndorf defended and ran the ball up the pitch, their own shot at goal too high. Possession swapped back and forth again between the teams, with the ball shot wide on each opportunity until Scott C made it 3 for Blackwood. Hahndorf were deprived of a half-time score by some excellent keeping by Blackwood's Angus D at the half’s end.

Blackwood started off strong again in the second, earning an early corner kick that led into a further 2 corners. Hahndorf made the most of the loose ball after the 3rd corner kick and sped down the pitch. A penalty was awarded to Hahndorf, which was saved by first-time keeper Zac V.  Blackwood raced straight into the attack, and the Hahndorf keeper doing well to prevent another Blackwood goal. Within a minute Hahndorf were awarded a corner, their set play delivering their first goal for the match. Blackwood wasted no time in attempting to bolster their winning margin, with another 2 attempts on goal. Winning possession back, Hahndorf’s further attempt was denied by the Blackwood keeper. Again, Blackwood went on the attack, and again they were denied by the Hahndorf keeper until Ben A snuck another into the net for Blackwood bringing the score to 4-1.
Moments later Hahndorf delivered 2 more fast goals to reduce the margin to 1. The Blackwood keeper was able to defer the equaliser by saving a further attempt soon after, but it did indeed come 13 minutes later. With approximately 10 minutes left in play, and score line even, Blackwood's Liam D landed hard and awkwardly from a fair tackle and was removed from the pitch with what has since been confirmed as a broken collar bone. With no subs available, Blackwood were reduced to 10 on field for the remaining minutes. In a nail-biting finish, Ben A once again found the net to bring the final score to Blackwood 5 – Hahndorf 4.

Blackwood were greatly saddened by the news of Liam’s fracture, as this is the second major injury in as many games. It has been confirmed that Lachlan S will require surgery to repair a nasty break to his nose as a result of taking a high kick to the face in the previous round.

Hahndorf Soccer Club (4) vs Blackwood Forest Soccer Club (5)

U15 BHS Forest hosted Hahndorf at Springbank Secondary College in Pasadena.

A well contested first half saw some great play from both sides. Hahndorf midfielders Toby Perkins and Will Whiting feed the ball up through the field but Hahndorf was finding it difficult to score even with some good solid shots towards the net. Despite a strong Hahndorf defence line up of Konrad Michael, Elwin Aylen, Alexander Romaldi and a welcomed addition to the team Manning Broadbent BHS Forest managed to score 3 goals by half time.

Hahndorf came back on the pitch full of energy and enthusiasm to put in a strong effort in the second half. A corner kick in resulted in the Hahndorf team getting their first goal but BHS responded with a 4th goal. Hahndorf found momentum and quickly evened the scoreboard up with a goal each from Damon Martin, Stefan Panich and Jacob Neumann.

Awesome saves from Hahndorf goalie Tom Boekel saw a nail biting finish to the game and BHS scoring again in the final minutes to win the match 5-4

Mount Barker United Soccer Club (0) vs Strathalbyn Strikers FC Inc (6)

It was a good morning for soccer...a crispness in the air that made you glad to be alive. There were many great moments at today's match against the mighty Strathalbyn team. The efforts of defence against the onslaught of the opposition was joyful to watch. Our keeper's dives and leaps legendary. The spirit amongst the attackers from the sidelines appeared intact despite the final score. Injuries and illness did not deter our team...a mostly valiant effort!

Woodside Warriors Soccer Club Red (1) vs Stirling Districts Soccer Club Blue (3)

The Woodside under 15 Reds played a hard fought match against Stirling Districts blue yesterday, and although play was mostly in our favour, we couldn’t convert multiple opportunities, with a soft penalty awarded against us, that ultimately saw us go down 1-3. This being said, there were multiple passages of play that saw us very strong in defence, and the strength in midfield did move the ball forward on several occasions. It was also good to see several of our players recovering from their ailments that left us with less holes.

There was commendable play from our defence with Bob closing up their left wing, and Flynn on the right. Stirling were clearly used to runs down the wing with crosses in to the centre, and Cooper was well protected by our two defenders. In fact, Cooper had a relaxing game as very few through balls were sent due to the speed and pressure we applied at all times, not giving them any time to create. They had a very strong creative midfielder (number 12), and Bradley was successful in not allowing him to create any play by marking him out of the game. James had an exceptional first half in keeper, reading the play beautifully and covering the shots with determination. Banjo played a great second half in keeper, with good ball reading and positioning seeing him have a reasonably easy second half compared to some games.

Our midfield was a bit hit and miss, but the majority of the time kept the opposition honest. Riley owned the ball in his space, and fed some creative outside right foot passes unpredictably down the left wing. For ‘not a midfielder’ he covered his position very well. Sam, although a little slow at times, most of the game was his usual, reliable middle cover with pressure being placed, a few runs, and some creative forward passing. Lysiane coped well given her ankle injury, and solidly covered the right midfield with her usual strength. Banjo played out of position from his usual attack, and put in a strong effort to get the ball forward. Ruby played her first full half in midfield, and worked very well at creating opportunities and space, pushing forward and switching with Maya at times.

Ryan tried to be creative in forward and got a few shots off, but his colour isn’t back yet, most likely related to the fact he was marked by 3 players out of the game! Harry had several runs down the left wing with great pressure and a few good shots, and James although very creative, struggled as anytime he got the ball, Stirling had multiple players shutting him down. We couldn’t make space in attack, but it will come.

The two outstanding players of the match were easy to see. Cohen continues to move from strength to strength with amazing ball ownership anytime the ball comes within his space. He is able to understand when he has time, and when he doesn’t and can read the game ahead of him. His speed and focus just didn’t stop. He moved forward at safe times, and was quickly back without leaving any holes in defence. Finally Maya played an outstanding game, covering the centre midfield beautifully. She was able to get the ball regardless of who was there every time, and created her own space, allowing her time to look around and move the ball with intelligence.

Ultimately, our defence was tight and midfield improving nicely which will lead to stronger attacking play. Despite their strength, we held and played a strong game back, and it was not easy for them. We did not give up, or get upset thus although they won, we did not lose. Our potential is there. We will keep working on our fitness as this is the obvious place that allow us more space and time in the play on the field.

Woodside Warriors Soccer Club Red (1) vs Stirling Districts Soccer Club Blue (3)

Playing at Stirling Districts’ home turf, Woodside’s U15 Reds opened the game with an early attempt at goal. Stirling Districts quickly replied with a few attempts of their own, putting Woodside keeper James, who seemed to have sticky gloves that day, under intense and sustained pressure. Midfielder Flynn headed off one such attempt at goal before James booted the ball past the halfway mark and temporarily out of danger. The pressure was kept up with several speedy attacks down the wings, the ball switching rapidly back and forth between the two teams, until Stirling Districts finally got one through Woodside’s defence and into the net. Stirling Districts didn’t pause to celebrate, but continued to pepper Woodside’s keeper with shots, who, in heavy congestion and with rebounds ping-ponging recklessly around the box, shut down the play with a dive over the ball, keeping the score to 1-0 until half time.

The intensity in the second half mirrored that of the first. A long kick through and chase down the pitch from Stirling Districts was deflected by Woodside’s defence just short of the goals, followed immediately by a barrage of shots which flew over the crossbar, hit the post, went wide and hit the post again - the pressure on Woodside’s defence was intense! Woodside second-half keeper, Banjo, did well to withstand these attacks, helped by centre defence Cooper, who twice got between the ball and a certain goal for Stirling Districts. Twenty minutes into the half an accidental hand-ball led to a penalty shot for Stirling Districts – who slotted an unsavable bottom left corner, bringing the score to 2-0. Five minutes later Stirling Districts scored again with a beautiful shot into the bottom right corner, bringing the score to 3-0. Woodside counter attacked with a sweeping long left cross from left wing Harry, finished off by James with a sensational sliding touch, getting Woodside on the scoreboard for the first time in the match. This was no doubt the play of the day. In the closing 15 minutes of the match Woodside kept the Stirling Districts defence working hard, narrowly missing a long right cross into goals and two more nerve-wracking attempts, the last of which ended with bodies from both teams strewn across the ground!

Not for the lack of trying by both teams, the score remained unchanged to the end of the game, finishing at a hard fought 3-1 victory to Stirling Districts.

Woodside Warriors Soccer Club Blue (4) vs Blackwood Forest Soccer Club (0)

In 2020 these two teams were the two top teams with BHS Forest and Torrens Valley also in the mix, but it was Stirling Districts who took home the silverware by two points from Woodside. So both teams knew that this was their first chance to see whom might be the likely contender for the 2021 trophy.

Fitting for the contest, we were provided with all three officials so this was an opportunity for all supporters to shout loud and players to bring their A game to the contest and that’s what coaches and spectators got for the first 20 minutes. From the first whistle both teams tried to find that passage of play that would get them into their opponent's attacking third and a shot on goal. Teams defended hard but Woodside seemed to clear their defensive lines with composure and purpose. As the game approached the midway mark of the first half, Woodside were applying the greater pressure with some great shots on target but as one shot hit the crossbar Woodside knew they had the upper hand. For the Warriors, today was about waiting for that opportunity and defending hard and that’s how they played. As they approached the 30 minute mark of the half Woodside’s defense held tight and a long high ball by their keeper found the Woodside striker in a foot race for goal. Taking his time and choosing his spot, the striker put his first goal home for the game. Stirling Districts then found an extra gear and applied their own pressure but Woodside's defence and midfield worked even harder to deny their opponents an opportunity. As the first half finished Woodside has a solitary goal lead and knew that their opponents were not out of the contest.

The first 10 minutes of the second half started off as it had finished with Stirling Districts pushing hard to find that elusive goal. Woodside though remained firm in defense, closing down opportunities and denying any shots on goal. Woodside was also creating opportunities getting behind Sterling’s defense and getting crosses into the box putting their opponents under great pressure. When one cross came into the back post two Warrior players were waiting and Woodside's striker scored his second for the game. Woodside had their tails up and not soon after the restart their defensive midfielder was left some space outside their opponent's 18 yard box. Taking his time he took the shoot and fired it into the back of the net. Woodside now had the upper hand, they still defended hard and repelled any Stirling attack. Woodside continued to attack down the flanks but a collision between a Woodside player and two District's players saw the game halted for some time as the Woodside player received some attention. Parents from both sides supported the injured player who felt dizzy from the knock. With a substitution made, Woodside managed to score its fourth but for the remaining 20 minutes the game was much more subdued. Woodside took the points this time but now as ladder leaders they know the next time these two teams meet the contest will be on again.

Woodside would like to thank the Stirling District parents and players who offered support to their injured player who finished the game sitting on the sideline supporting. It was good to also see his friends and former teammates in opposition shirts stand by his side as the final minutes counted down. Woodside looks forward to the next round when these two teams meet.

Hahndorf Soccer Club (4) vs Woodside Warriors Soccer Club (3)

It was a grey and chilly day with a cold wind blowing across the Woodside oval as The Hahndorf Magpies faced off against the Woodside Warriors in Round 6 of the Under 17 season.

At 9:02 am the Warriors kicked off to find that Xavier Kell had taken the ball straight up the wing and almost scored in the first 20 seconds.  Woodside found their form and carried back with Hahndorf relying on Charlie Hodgson and Matt Daly with help from Daniel McArthur to keep reversing the flow of play.

Jye Martin drove at the Warriors goal finishing with a beautiful cross which just missed getting in.  The Warriors managed to return in fine form and scored the first goal of the match with a clean head off of a corner kick. In return, Edward Hardingham  and Tyler Weyland aggressively challenged and took another shot on goal, just missing.  Followed by a long outside shot from Matt Daly off of Edward Hardingham’s pass which grazed the Warriors’ Keeper’s nose as it just missed the mark.  The Warriors, meanwhile, did not let Hahndorf run the game.  Their finely honed teamwork and aggressive offence had them scoring off of another corner kick.

At this point, with a score of 2/nil in the Warriors favour, Hahndorf had to do some soul searching and get back into the game.  Following strong and sometimes “last-minute” defence by Daniel McArthur and Josh Rayner and some good saves by the Hahndorf Keeper, Toby Boekel, Hahndorf finally scored with a drive from Kyle Fenlon to Jye Martin and crossed to Matt Daly who kicked it in.

Now, with a goal on the board, Hahndorf found some spirit.  David Nielsen stepped up with some great saves while Daniel McArthur was all over the field always just where the Warriors did not want him.

The moment arrived again.  The Warriors found themselves in the position of having another corner kick, just suiting their skills at converting these into marks on the board.  It was up and beautifully placed, but the Hahndorf team had found themselves and managed to keep this one from getting in.  The Warriors, undeterred, drove it back with the Hahndorf Keeper, Toby Boekel, making a great save to keep the score at 2 to 1 at half time.

The second half started at 9.51 with darkening clouds and two teams “fired up” to take control of this game.  This excitement turned into some challenging play with a yellow card to Hahndorf.  This was followed by Matt Daly being fouled and given a free kick which he brought home beautifully, making the score 2 to 2, and the tension mounted.

Hahndorf feeling that this could be their chance had Daniel McArthur nearly converting a corner kick.  Tyler Weyland and Josh Rayner led the defence keeping the Warriors’ strong and precise offence from scoring; while, David Nielsen seemed to come out of nowhere, at times, just managing to upset the attack.

The moment came with Xavier Kell, once again, driving up the wing, passing to Kyle Fenlon who passed to Jye Martin, and it became 3 to 2 in Hahndorf’s favour.  The crowds erupted with the turnover, and the players increased the intensity leading to a penalty kick against Hahndorf. With Toby Boekel focused, reaching for it and barely missing the ball, the score became 3 to 3 and everyone held their breath with just six minutes left in the game.

In the final minutes of the game Hahndorf found themselves in the position of a corner kick, just the position that the Warriors had found so successful against them.  Matt Daly kicked.  Kyle Fenlon found the ball just at the outside corner, and it was in.  Hahndorf pulled ahead 4 to 3 with three minutes left.

The struggle continued, as neither of these proud teams would give up, but Hahndorf managed to hold their lead with a final score in Hahndorf’s favour.

Hahndorf would like to thank Coach James Kerr, Manager James Kell and Narelle Hardingham for their support, and The Woodside Warriors for a good match on the day.

Woodside Warriors Soccer Club (3) vs Hahndorf Soccer Club (4)

It was a tough day in the office for the Woodside U17 team. With a clean run through the first leg of the league, including Hahndorf, the boys were sitting comfortably on top of the ladder. They had started the league with a 5-4 win over HSC and were keen to repeat that again for the sixth round.

If anything Woodside were too comfortable. This was the case when Hahndorf lost to Woodside in 2020, their only loss for the season. They were expecting an easy win and unfortunately didn’t convert, tainting their season with a single loss. Woodside didn’t want that to happen to them and took to pitch with the aim to protect their sacred spot on the ladder.

As per usual the AHRB assigned a referee, but they also threw in two assistant referees as well as a mentor to manage any issues. Naturally, given it was a 1st vs 2nd game, it was going to be bringing some passion.

The game kicked off at 9am on a cooler, but appreciatively dry morning at the Woodside Recreation Ground.

HSC were unlucky not to convert from kick-off over an ill-prepared Woodside team. The home team needed a wake-up moment and this was it. They found form, and control, which eventually allowed LACHLAN MOWBRAY to open up the account for his team on the 10th minute.

With the ball constantly changing possession at an almost 50:50 split between the two it was only a matter of time before the next goal would be scored. Woodside’s left-back and star corner taker, CASEY GODFREY, was given an opportunity to prove his worth on the 15th minute. His precision saw Mowbray score his second via a header, and some requests for a keeper swap by the away players, naturally denied by their coach.

On the 23rd minute HSC managed to claw themselves back into the game with a play culminating with Matt Daly managing to get one past Woodside’s keeper. The last 15 minutes of the first half saw some quality football from both sides, however nothing substantial enough to change the scoreline. They entered the break 2-1 in favour of Woodside.

The second half saw both teams take to the pitch with intent. The away team, still feeling the burn from Round 1, had a little more vigour and scored on the 49th and 67th minute, giving HSC a goal in the lead.

Despite a couple of injuries to key Woodside attackers, JETT TONKIN and EDDIE HERMAN, Mowbray managed to score his third goal on the 74th minute, levelling the score once again. This goal also gave Mowbray the infamous Golden Hat Trick, with goals on his left, his right and a header.

HSC maintained the drive and concluded the game with minutes to spare. HSC’s Kyle Fenlon found the ball just at the outside corner albeit in the hands of the keeper, and it was in, giving the away team a goal up on the final whistle.

“This makes for a great competition,” said Coach BRUCE TONKIN. “The result sees both teams on 15 points, both teams scoring 23 goals, but a mere 2 goal the difference against them. It’ll be an exciting season.”

Best and fairest went to right-back JOSH VASSOS who thrilled the crowd with some beautiful pieces of defending. LACHLAN MOWBRAY and ISAIAH HAMMAT collect notable mentions.

The next round sees Hahndorf take on 3rd place Strathalbyn at Pine Avenue, whilst Woodside will travel to Ashton to meet Rangers.

Stirling United Soccer Club (1) vs Rangers Junior Soccer Club (2)

With temperatures starting to drop, an 1130 kick off was a blessing for the U17 match at Ashton Oval, with local rivals Rangers and Stirling United battling it out for the second time this season. First time round saw the teams draw 1-1, and matches between the teams over recent seasons have almost always been tight affairs, with Stirling United holding the upper hand in the head to head count.

The match started with both teams playing tight, contested football, with few chances at either end, but a good chance for Rangers was only prevented from opening the scoring by a brilliant save from Lachlan Stein in goal. Stirling started to take more control of the game from that point on, and had a number of good chances missing by small margins before a free kick taken from well beyond the D by Henry Monaghan soared over the goal keeper and into the back of the net to give Stirling a well deserved lead.

Rangers defence otherwise held strong, led by Tom Playford who was reading the play superbly and repelling attack after attack.

After half time, Stirling continued to press forward, but a counter attack from Rangers saw them draw level with a lovely finish past Stein in goal. With renewed confidence, Rangers had further opportunities, drawing another brilliant take from Stein to prevent Stirling going behind.

As the match passed the one hour mark, Stirling started to take control, and saw multiple opportunities for goals go begging with shots going over the top or wide. It seemed a matter of time before they would score, when almost out of nowhere, after a scuffle at the defensive end saw Stirling temporarily a player down, a quick long ball downfield was pounced on by the Rangers attack and score to pull ahead. Despite protestation from the Stirling players, the goal counted, leaving only minutes remaining for a late equaliser. Alas that wasn’t to be, and Rangers held on for the victory and bragging rights until the final encounter later in the season.

Near perfect conditions saw SDFC start quickly and take the early running. Sustained pressure eventually told with a goal to SDFC in the 8th minute. Despite several good counter attacks Strath White were unable to get past some bold keeping from SDFC. SDFC countered and ran in another goal just before half time to lead 2-0 at the break.

The opening of the second half saw Strath White, despite a slight head wind, really take the game to SDFC, but again were unable to make good their control. SDFC rebounded later in the second half to regain control and run in a further goal, with another disallowed for offside, to take the game 3-0 at the final whistle.

Hahndorf Soccer Club (0) vs Torrens Valley Soccer Club (5)

The weather was kind to both spectators and players alike and a nice pitch to play on.

Hahndorf had a substitute coach, Scott Fairly and new players which created subs on the bench. Hanhdorf anticipated  a tough match ahead.

The match started out ferociously with Torrens Valley scoring in the first minute of the game. Goal scored by Grace Quane. Hahndorf goalie, Charlotte Fairley, working hard to stop further attempts.

Hahndorf’s new players Zara and Luciann Tinsley-Smith, showing some expert skills against friendly rivals Torrens Valley.  Torrens Valley Clare Levy scored their second goal at the 17 minute mark. Another 10 minutes of strong play from both sides saw Torrens Valley score again, this time at the 27 minute mark.  Jamie-Lee Strauss finding the back of the net.

After a half time pep talk, Hahndorf found strength to play a tougher game in the second half with many girls standing stronger against their players. Defence was strengthened with Amber Klose, Z Tinsley-Smith and Charlotte Fairley coming out of goals. Hahndorf held strong until the 22nd minute mark where Torren’s Valley’s Strauss, once again scoring.

It looked like the game was done but in the last minutes, a goal attempt by Torren’s Valley’s Emily Tziros met with Hahndorf Goal keeper Morenike Kelly, with the ball deflected off fingers and back into the goal. Final scoreline of 5-0 didn't represent the strength of the competitive play by both teams.
