Woodside Warriors Soccer Club Blue vs Nairne Knights Soccer Club

Well done to our u8 Blue team winning their first match of the season!!

Jonah and Samuel showed great improvement! The team is really trying hard and its showing!

Hahndorf Soccer Club vs Mount Barker United Soccer Club Blue

Anembo Park was home for the Hahndorf Magpie's windy round 4 match against Mount Barker United Blue.

Both coaches set the game with positivity after "elbow touches" to get the game going.  The whistle blew and within the first minute Soren Mickan ran a long stretch and scored Hahndorf's first goal.

Josh Pettitt came out firing and attempted his first goal of the day however it was saved by Mt Barker's goalie.  Pettitt's strong kicks to mid fielders Mickan and Carter Hartley led to another attempt at goal.  Owen Hoyle showed wonderful confidence and foot skills through the middle of the pitch.  Pettitt's strength continued and a hat trick was scored by him in the first half.

Indie Dunning had some quick running with the ball and a great shot at goal but was unable to score.  Levi Neumann spent the first half as goalie and saved Mt Barker's attempt.  The first half finished with Oliver Knight scoring a ripper.

Fresh legs from Neumann gave good run through the second half with some attempts at goal.  Mt Barker scored their first goal of the game and Violet Mitchell provided good passes allowing Hoyle to score Hahndorf's final goal of the match.

Great to watch the kids enjoying themselves on the pitch!

U9

Hahndorf Soccer Club Black vs Mount Barker United Soccer Club

Mount Barker United started the kick-off against Hahndorf U9 Blacks on a mild, slightly breezy Saturday morning.

Some good early movement from both teams saw the ball down both ends frequently with displays of some fine passing and defensive skills. Both sides found some opportunities to get a shot on goals, only to just miss or be saved by the keeper. Conor Castle, picking up goalie position in the first half, saved several early goal attempts before Mount Barker United got one past him at the 8 minute mark.

Not to be deterred, Hahndorf pushed the ball up the offensive end with several good goal attempts throughout the first half. Displaying strong defence, both teams made attempts on goal in the latter part of the first half, with Rowen Gilroy finding an opening and hammering home an equaliser a few minutes before half time.

Hahndorf taking the kick-off to start the second half also saw a change of Hahndorf goalie to Caleb Early. Hahndorf were hot on the attack early on with an quick  goal attempt running just wide of the goal post.

The second half showed some signs of energy levels reducing as ball movement slowed from both teams but a good spread of players including Zack Perkins still allowed the ball to make its way to both ends frequently. Shot attempts for goal slowed down as the defence by both Hahndorf and Mount Barker appeared to strengthen.

The remaining time for the match saw some fantastic defence from Hahndorf’s Gilroy and Lachlan Gardner and good attacking from Mount Barker. With some final goal attempts by Hugo Curtis, Lucca Falvo-Lopez and Jhett Frost from Hahndorf just unable to convert. A great game played by all and thanks to our stand by coach Graham Phillip for leading us through this weeks game.

Woodside Warriors Soccer Club Blue vs Bridgewater Soccer Club

U9 Blue vs Bridgewater

A fantastic game of football today for the Woodside Under-9 blue team, and first clean sheet against Bridgewater at home.

After a few weeks of finding their feet and a couple of heavy losses to Stirling in previous rounds, the U9 Blues are beginning to gel as a team and showed some promising link-up play between midfield and the forwards.

The game started pretty evenly but the Woodside team soon showed their tenacity and a strong desire to win the ball in midfield and turn that into attack. This resulted in some period of reasonably sustained pressure from Woodside in their opponents’ half and a goal coming from Sam, who struck the ball well to beat the Bridgewater keeper. Despite a couple of Bridgewater free-kicks in dangerous positions, Woodside defended well and went into the break ahead.

Woodside maintained their focus for the second half, adding a couple of goals and restricting the Bridgewater team to counter-attacks, which the defence and keeper closed-down quickly and efficiently.

This win was the confidence boost the U9 Blue team needed. They showed promise in all areas of the field and can hopefully develop from here into a team that is difficult to beat.

Woodside Warriors Soccer Club Red vs Murray Bridge United Soccer Club

We were ready and excited to play today. The first half was tightly contested with the ball going up and down the pitch. We managed to get the ball in the open and scored an early goal. The team showed some great defence and tackling which Murray Bridge matched to enable them a couple of chances at goal but they missed by a whisker.

The second half the pressure was still on and Murray Bridge managed to sneak a goal past our goaly. From then on each team had several attempts at goal but only Woodside managed to convert them. I was a great match with each team showing outstanding sportsmanship. Well done.

Mount Barker United Soccer Club Red (2) vs Stirling United Soccer Club (5)

A clear but  windy day greeted players and spectators at Anembo Park for the Round 4 - U/12 clash between Mount Barker and Stirling United. Mount Barker were coming off 2 consecutive wins whilst Stirling United were yet to lose a game this season. A good game was looming as Mount Barker were chasing a hat-trick of wins whilst Stirling were looking to cement their position in the Top 4 on the competition ladder. A good crowd of family, friends and supporters were in attendance.

Mount Barker started proceedings and quickly penetrated into the Stirling defensive line. The Stirling defence were up to the task and confidently delivered the ball forward to their fast running midfielders. After a good combination of passes, Stirling #19 Corby Tucker, directed a good shot on goal and found the back of the net after only 4mins. Mount Barker were a little shocked to concede such an early goal.

From the kickoff, Mount Barker surrendered possession and Stirling threatened to add to the scoreboard. The Mount Barker defensive line was solid and after some good scrambling, managed to clear the ball to their fast running midfielder, #7 Rupert Curran. With a well timed pass the ball was fed to the fleet-footed Mount Barker striker, # 27 Archer Hawkins who with a good turn of speed broke away from the Stirling defensive line and directed the ball into the back of the net

At the 10min mark scores were locked at 1-1

Mount Barker's goal seemed to jolt the Stirling team into action who responded almost immediately with a fast goal by the skilful #10 Samuel Doyle, who shot calmly to put his team back in the lead 2-1. After only 11mins the crowd had witnessed 3 goals! This game was entertaining to say the least.

The next 15mins belonged to Stirling who grew in confidence, dominated possession and field position. At the 16min mark a second goal to #10 Samuel Doyle threatened to open the floodgates He was now running rampant through the Mount Barker defence. This goal was backed up shortly before half-time when  #19 Corby Tucker also claimed his second goal for the game. A couple of substitutions by the Mount Barker coach saw Billie Goedecke pull on the keepers gloves and Sophia Canova enter the fray.

At the halftime break Stirling were confidently leading 4 -1

The second half began a little slower than the first. Mount Barker were now more composed and structured in their play. This however did not stop the Stirling United #2, Aiden McKenna from increasing his teams lead with a good shot into the back of the net to take them to a 5-1 lead.

From the kickoff Mount Barker responded almost immediately with the ball pressed hard up into the Stirling defensive line. After a period of scrambling in front of goals, the ball found its way to the feet of Mount Barkers ever reliable striker #27 Archer Hawkins, who shot true for his second goal of the game.

The scoreline now read 5-2 in Stirling Uniteds favour and 3 players were vying for a hat-trick of goals!

In the windy conditions both teams now struggled to maintain possession. The game now swung end to end without any further score

At the full time whistle Stirling United were victorious (5-2) and maintained their unbeaten run of 4 games

Stirling United must now feel very confident going into their Round 5 clash next week against Murray Bridge Blue. For Mount Barker, they must now compose themselves and focus on their next clash against Hahndorf White

Both coaches agreed the game was played in good spirits and was an entertaining spectacle

Woodside Warriors Soccer Club Red (6) vs Rangers Junior Soccer Club (0)

Woodside U12 Red hosted Ranges fixture this week with a 9am crisp start. Woodside started the game slowly and it was apparent that the early start and perhaps the second week of holidays had it made it a challenge to tempo the momentum of the game as we grinded through the first 5 minutes.

Elliot Klein opened the scoring in the 7 minute mark and it was the trigger point for the Reds to kick back into gear. In the blink of an eye Elliot had notched up his second goal and this sparked goals for the usual suspects Rojo Nambia and Josh Constable who also opened up their accounts for the day.

Finn Cradock fresh from holidays spent the first half in unfamiliar striker territory and assisted with constant forward presses for the first half. Of the few times that the opposition found their way into our defensive territory were expertly negated by Finn Randell who, each week is going from strength to strength. As Woodside settled and started to control the game, Nate Dealtry the defensive general, was convinced to wander forward beyond the sacred half way line territory and found himself deep into the forward line. Looking a little nervously back to the half way line, Nate took a deep breath and took the plunge and ran at the ball just outside the box and registered his first assist by setting up the 4th goal for the half.

In the second half Gracie Lloyd had convinced the coach that she was keen to get on the score sheet so, a shuffle was made and Gracie slotted into the left striker position. It wasn’t long before Gracie was leading into dangerous forward spaces and was unlucky not to score her first goal for the year.

Jamie Spooner worked hard on the right wing all day and prevented the opposition from getting the ball out of their defensive half on many occasions. Jordan Virgara was everywhere as usual and provided good run out of the midfield and provided plenty of opportunities for Josh Constable who worked hard and peppered the goals with many near goal scoring opportunities. Rojo’s usual relentless attack on the ball led to a well deserved first goal for the second half. Elliot worked tirelessly all day often dropping back to sweep up in defense as the Rangers regrouped and put pressure on Woodside’s defense. As Elliot pressed forward again he was well rewarded with another goal which notched up a well deserved hattrick. In the last 15 minutes of the game, Woodside were playing more in their defensive half and  Axel Vassos appreciated the defensive stubbornness and wasn’t required to make any saves for the day. Thomas Honner and Deagen Arnold linked up well in defense making it difficult for the Ranges attackers to find any space and all shots on goal were well wide of the goals. Full time score was 6-0.

Hahndorf Soccer Club Black (6*) vs Hahndorf Soccer Club White (0)

The overcast day started out with a guaranteed win for a Hahndorf team as the under 12 White met the under 12 Black team in the first showdown of the season.

Both teams moved quickly with some great initial offense by Jacob Neumann and Riley Neumann, supported in defense by strong kicks from Joash Ng.

First goal was converted by Neumann, J and was followed by some good action up and down the pitch, seeing Toby Perkins, Henri Bjordal and Zack Schwarz showing great team work to move the ball down toward their goal end.

Defence was strong from Ng, Angus Mifsud and Blane Balcom and some long kicks saw the ball remain in strong play. A great save by Neumann R led to the set up of a second goal for Hahndorf from Perkins. Luca Cannavo was in the thick of the action leading up to the half time break, securing many good interactions with the opposing team.

The sun briefly broke through the blackening clouds to start the second half. The Hahndorf black team of Zahra P and Perkins effectively moved the ball up the pitch to the goal area, with Hahndorf White responding by returning the ball to their side with good offensive play.

Neumann R showed some great control to return the ball to the black end, with some good intercepts by Schwarz. A big kick from Bjordal resulted in a goal for Hahndorf Black. Neumann J showcased some formidable kicking which was backed up by good intercepts from Ng. A long kick from Neumann R resulted in a goal.

Perkins played an excellent running game, consistently returning the ball to the Hahndorf Black goal end. A further goal was converted by Bjordal as strong teamwork saw Hahndorf black move ahead. Hahndorf white again displayed a good running game, to return the ball to play down their end.

A further goal was converted by Zahra, P, followed by some great saves from the opposition goalie. Hahndorf black finished strongly with a goal from Ng shortly followed by a goal from Neumann J. Jet Zahra did strong work in the goals, with great saves preventing a goal from Hahndorf white.

Some good running up and down the lines saw the ball move quickly between ends before the final siren. We would like to thank the Hahndorf White team for a match played with great vigour.

Woodside Warriors Soccer Club Blue (2) vs Torrens Valley Soccer Club (2)

Parents braved the cold and windy conditions at Birdwood this morning for the U12 match between Torrens Valley and Woodside Warriors Blue. The conditions didn’t seem to bother the players though. Warriors started hard and fast at the first whistle keeping the ball in their forward half and putting the goalie to work blocking a few attempts. Torrens Valley quickly warmed up though and snuck one past Warriors players. Torrens Valley C.Mugford shot for goal slipped past Warriors goalie B.Bevan and scored the first goal for the game at the 3-minute mark. Warriors responding with S.Cotton hitting one to the back of the net and scoring Warriors first goal only 2 minutes later. Both teams seemed to be well matched with lots of tussles for the ball. Goalies at both ends had their work cut out for them but both were working hard and stopping the many attempts at goal. Warriors defence J.Lunnon and M.Burroughes covering lots of ground and applying pressure to Torrens players on the run. O.Boerth picking up those that got passed. M.Burroughes went down with a knee injury and after being carried off left Warriors one player down on the pitch. That wasn’t enough to stop Warriors though and with determination they pushed through. Well placed pass from M.Davis set D.Silvestri up for Warriors second goal only 2 minutes before the whistle for half time. Half time score was Warriors 2 Torrens 1. In the break, Torrens coach checked on Warriors injured player and decided to also play with one less player to even the playing field (great sportsmanship). Both teams started the second half with fires in their bellies and determination on their faces. Great plays were seen by both sides and the goalies were kept on their toes with many attempts at goal had by both sides. Some great saves were witnessed and had spectators roaring on both sides cheering both teams on. M.Burroughes felt ok to get back in the game and Torrens put their extra player back out there also. Warriors P.Thomas was standing strong in forward and was in there with the play working with her teammates M.Olsson and E.Moylan trying to keep it at their goal and slip it into the net but was met with the brilliant goal keeping from Torrens. Play seemed to be locked in a constant back and forth with players on both teams working hard and never giving up. Warriors goalie M.Olsson blocking every attempt and saved some great shots at goal but Torrens N.Witter managed to sneak one passed and scored the only goal for the second half with only a few minutes to go in the game. Warriors played their hearts out and never once gave up, very proud of all of them. At the final whistle the scores were tied at 2 all. Was some great football played by all players and was certainly a great game for the spectators to watch. Well done to both teams.

MATCH REPORT

A cool and overcast morning saw the Hahndorf U12 derby. Hayden Lien, Dante Man and Emlyn Gilroy were suitably aggressive strikers. Harrison Gould, Ryder Hill and Jacob Gardner pushed forward to support the attack. Jasper Jones, Captain Patrick Hinze, Zoe York and Levi Beesley spread across defence with Reilly Bowden in goals. Oliver Dahmke and Simran Singh cheered their team on from the bench.

Whites showed a promising strong attack from the starting whistle until Blacks quickly retaliated. Bowden ran out to defend the goal. Blacks were granted a corner which was skilfully cleared down the wing by York. Blacks intercepted and continued with pressure on goal. Bowden's kick from the top of the square was picked up with a breakaway Lien with support from Gilroy up the wing. Two goal attempts by Whites were skilfully cleared by Blacks. Whites’ strikers made some good passes with Beesley keeping the ball in Whites attacking half. Great footwork by Gould! Blacks retaliated and were met with a good clear from Bowden which was picked up by Hinze and returned to the attacking half down the wing. Working the wing and passing by midfield and strikers looked promising. York and Dahmke were subbed off and replaced by Singh and Man.

Again Bowden cleared Blacks attempt on goal with Hinze picking it up and sending it back down the wing. Blacks returned pressure resulted in a corner and the first goal of the match was conceded. Gardner took the centre passing to Gilroy. Whites defended Blacks corner and as they moved through centre field Lien took a ball to the face and insisted on staying on the pitch. Bowden took another save, clearing the ball to Lien. As Blacks returned on the attack, Jones powerfully returned the ball to Whites' attacking half. Once again Blacks continued their push on goal and a second was conceded. Following the centre pass, Whites were again in defence with an excellent clear by Beesley. Blacks’ next attempt on goal was offside although expertly saved by Bowden. Jones demonstrated some good defending and another save by Bowden. Young Singh really stepped up to the challenge, stopping and clearing the ball to the wing on several occasions, passing up the field. The first half ended with another great save by Bowden, despite Whites being 2 down.

At the start of the second half Bowden and Singh supported from the sidelines, supporting their team. Man valiantly elected to be in goals. The kick off resulted in the ball being in Whites defensive zone which was forcefully pushed back by York. Blacks’ sustained a mild injury and good clearing by Gilroy lead a push on goal Beesley. Return fire saw Hinze stop Blacks’ attack, backed up by a strong defensive team effort. Man conceded a goal twice his height.

This provided good opportunity to substitute Dahmke off for Singh and Gardner for Bowden. York and Singh quickly picked up and demonstrated some exceptional team work. Unfortunately another goal sailed above Man’s head. Another corner was taken with a goal conceded. Man backed this up with an exceptional save!

Gardner was promptly subbed for Singh and Gilroy for Dahmke. Blacks’ thrown in resulted in a goal conceded by Whites. Beesley and Dahmke showed good team work and passing with great kicking by Gould. Two great saves by Man, unfortunately the second was not cleared sufficiently and resulted in a goal. At this point Gilroy subbed for Bowden and Singh for Bowden. Another great save by Man was quickly followed by the 5th goal conceded. Hill and Gilroy made a spectacular attempt on goal, demonstrating the very best of team work and communication. Unfortunately it was thwarted. Blacks continued to dominate which gave York a great opportunity defending goal. Excellent leadership was demonstrated by Whites’ more experienced players supporting those new to the game and full pitch. Some of our players who have recently come up from U10s are learning to appreciate the difference in game play from a half to full-size pitch and it will be exciting to watch as they develop over the season.

Final game score was Blacks 8 to Whites 0. Some useful learnings and improvements to communication were demonstrated in this match suggesting an exciting season ahead. Hahndorf Under 12 White wish to thank Hahndorf Under 12 Black for the game played Saturday 18 June 2020.

Woodside Warriors Soccer Club Gold (1) vs Mount Barker United Soccer Club Blue (2)

After kicking 25 goals in their first three encounters, Mt Barker U12 Blue must have had some confidence when they travelled to the mighty Warriors Fortress for their Round 4 encounter. They may have been expecting another goal fest, but the hosts had other plans…

Right from the outset, this was a tight contest. Time and again Mt Barker surged forward with an air of well-deserved confidence, but time and again they were repelled. The Warriors, kicking into the wind, repeatedly turned defense into attack, and when they advanced they looked dangerous! For 28 minutes, the game maintained a frantic rhythm as the ball surged from end to end. Eventually, it was Mt Barker who broke the deadlock, capitalizing on a scrappy ball in the 6 yard box to hack one past the keeper. Moments later the whistle sounded and we went to the break.

The second half started with a completely different momentum. The pendulum had now swung in favor of the home team as they pushed the ball forward and created multiple shots on goal. Soon enough one found the net and the game hung in the balance at 1 – 1. The game held this momentum as the home side repeatedly attacked the goal, but the visiting keeper’s mits kept getting in the way. Not once, but nine times, the keeper was put to the sword, and nine times he got in the way. This herculean effort was enough to keep the visitors firmly in the race and as the game wore on and legs got tired, small spaces opened up in front of the home net. Eventually a well guided shot slid past the keeper to put the visitors up 2 – 1. But the Warriors, keen to live up to their namesake, kept pressing. Every one of the 12 home players strove for victory with every ounce of their being. But although they finished with 10 shots on target to the visitors 4, it was Mt Barker who got the choccies with a 2 – 1 victory.

MATCH REPORT

BHS showed a high level of skill and teamwork to gain the win. Hahndorf fought hard with the defence line especially Matthew Knight , Konrad Michael and Orland Rettig assisting goal keeper Tom Boekel who was under relentless pressure. At the attack end, midfielders Gabe Aylen and Julian Hack worked hard to set up several shots at goal by forwards James Austin and Harry Williams but they were unlucky on all but one occasion in the last 30 minutes - with James Austin scoring the only  goal for Hahndorf. Hahndorf wish to congratulate BHS on a comprehensive win and for inspiring our team to continue to improve.

Woodside Warriors Soccer Club Blue (7*) vs Woodside Warriors Soccer Club Red (1)

There was no cross town rivalry as occurs in most derbies when Woodside Blue played their friends and past teammates the Woodside Red team on Saturday. There were just two teams out to demonstrate good football skills and determination and that’s what the spectators saw from beginning to end.

With a number of games at the Warriors home ground the start was moved forward 30 minutes to ensure that the teams could play on the main pitch before the Senior fixture.

The Woodside Warrior Blue team had much to be cautious about as the Reds have proven that if they are given opportunities then they can certainly score goals and make it a tight tussle. The start of the game and much of the first half was indeed a tussle with both teams having good passages of plays in their attacking end. The Reds quick movement and speed upfront put pressure on the Blues defense but they stood up to the task again and again. Likewise their opponents were strong in defense matching the run of the Blues wingers and applying pressure at the right times to stop shots on goal. After a well contested 20 minutes Woodside Blue finally found some space and scored the opening goal, but the Reds were not to be denied and after breaking through the defense the Reds center forward slotted the ball home to draw the game. Woodside Red continued to defend well catching the Blues off side numerous times but as the half was coming to a close the Blues managed another goal. At the end of the first half Woodside Blue 2, Woodside Red 1.

The Blues started off the better in the second half with a much more measured level of play. Playing into the wind they started to find feet and space behind their opponent's defense creating more opportunities in front of goals. It was still 20 minutes into the second half before another goal was scored, this time the Blues Centre forward found a little space and slotted his first of three for the afternoon home. The other two came soon after and the Blues finally were finding their target players up front. The Blues though started to lose their shape and the Reds stepped up their pressure in defense clearing the ball through the midfield and onto their attackers. This had the Blues defense scrambling on numerous occasions but the back four managed to close down their opponents and clear the ball back up to their midfielders. For the remainder of the game the Blues midfield found their shape and worked hard scoring the last three goals of the game. The final score was Woodside Blue 8, Woodside Red 1.

At the end of the game Woodside Blue had come away with another win but their opponents should be commended for their efforts from start to finish. Playing with just 11 players they demonstrated the Woodside Warrior spirit.

Woodside Warriors Soccer Club Red (1) vs Woodside Warriors Soccer Club Blue (7*)

Woodside Red had a hard fought match today against our frienemies Woodside Blue! The improvements from last week were easily seen from the sideline, with a lot less silly defensive errors and more convincing tackling and clearances. Many players clearly were starting to settle into their abilities, and the strong first half showed just what we are capable of. Sam took on a familiar role in central defence, and although we missed him in midfield, his defensive prowess saw him getting some great tackling and clearances in the most important position. Cohen played a new position for him, sweeper, and the combination of his determination, speed and tackling shut down a lot of the Blues attacking motions. Flynn played in left back, and shut down many winger runs and crosses. Banjo and Riley both worked hard in right back, and showed their want to get the ball on many occasions. This defensive line of 4 opened up our game compared to last week and the strength of our defense today was a joy to watch. Riley T had a cracker of a game in keeper (again), covering the goal with great skill and saving many goals! Riley (for his defensive determination), Flynn (for his strength) and Ruby (for her relentlessness) received players of the match.

Lysiane played very strongly in central midfield with a lot of movement and strong tackles. George ventured out of defense into midfield, and by the second half was showing his want to get the ball and ability to lay off some strategic passes. Ruby was a little firecracker and just ran and ran, and although her kick lacks strength, she more than makes up for it in passing accuracy and thought. Manny and Ryan struggled to get the ball, but on the occasions they did it was moved artfully and creatively between them.

It would be easy to say that we did not do well, but the final result does not show just how strong and improved we played in the first half. Most of the goals were scored against us in the late second half, when our lack of any reserves saw us all tired (even me!) But if we look at how much we improved in just a week, we just need to keep learning how to work together in a positive way. Our positioning is better, but there is still some crowding we need to work to avoid. Well done all!

U16

Hahndorf Soccer Club (7) vs Woodside Warriors Soccer Club (1)

Saturday’s game against the Woodside Warriors saw a blustery early morning start for the yet

undefeated Hahndorf U16 squad. Hahndorf opened strongly with a beautifully placed header by Kyle

Fenlon in the first five minutes that resulted in the ball finding the back of the net. Hahndorf kept the ball down the opposition’s end throughout most

of the first half and attempted numerous crosses, assists, and shots on goal. Fenlon had a number of

further attempts, ably assisted by Xavier Kell and Hayden Abrahams. The mid-field stayed rock solid,

ensuring the ball stayed down the correct end. A second goal by Jackson Doley, coming up from the

mid-field, closed out the half. In the second half, Woodside rallied to gain a bit of ground but

Hahndorf again peppered the opposition’s goal, resulting in two more goals by Fenlon, two by

Edward Hardingham, and one by Kell. Defenders Toby Bockel, Alex Montagu, Oakley Lockyer, and

Josh Rayner made sure the ball kept heading up the right end.  The return to the team of keeper James Bagley meant that the rest of the players could focus on the job in front of them and they showed great stamina and determination throughout the entire game.

Woodside Warriors Soccer Club (1) vs Hahndorf Soccer Club (7)

Woodside’s encounter with Hahndorf on Saturday morning fulfilled expectations.

The game was played at the Woodside Recreation Ground at 9:00am with the away team travelling the short distance to Woodside. The conditions were cold and blustery, although surprisingly dry. After a sunny week the pitch was in top condition for a mid-winter’s game.

The Woodside team knew the game will be difficult with the Hahndorf Under 16 team having a number of players with more than two years experience in the division. One in particular began in the Under 16 division way back in 2017. Meanwhile, at that time, the majority of the Woodside boys were in the U12 division. The odds were certainly in Hahndorf’s favour.

The first half of forty minutes was surprisingly shy of even. Hahndorf opened their goal tally in the third minute with ex-Stirling United player Kyle Fenlon scoring off of a header. Two minutes later Woodside was able to equalise with a particularly pleasant cross to JETT TONKIN who easily hit the back of the net. By half time Hahndorf managed to score a second, taking them into the break 2-1 up.

At half time Woodside was ecstatic with the first half’s performance, expecting to be much further behind the eight-ball than a single goal. If anything they had enjoyed it but knew they’d enter the second half ready for Hahndorf to open up.

As expected Hahndorf delivered an extra five goals over the second half, ending the score 7-1 in their favour. With a bit more in their tanks Hahndorf were able to sustain the 80-minute game for longer than Woodside. Eighty minutes is a long time for anyone, let alone for a group of players off the back-end of an U14 division.

“I couldn’t be more proud of the boys after that match”, said Woodside Coach BRUCE TONKIN. “Everyone put in maximum effort, as expected, and all were on their best behaviour up against solid and experienced opponents”.

Best and fairest went to Woodside’s BENJI BAILES who’s speed and ball control have always been notable. The energetic JOSH VASSOS followed closely behind, with JETT TONKIN picking up third.

Stirling United Soccer Club (3) vs Strathalbyn Strikers FC Inc White (3)

Stirling United travelled to Strathalbyn to take on undefeated Strathalbyn White in what promised to be a tightly contested match. Strathalbyn were pressing early, with Stirling unable to control the ball and constantly under pressure. After being awarded a somewhat contentious penalty, Strathalbyn went ahead after 10 minutes, and continued to have the game almost entirely in their forward half. Stirling had their first real chance when Matthew Silcock took a cross on the volley but the ball drifted wide. Further chances for Strathalbyn followed in what was pretty much one way traffic, but outstanding defending from captain Toby Leigh prevented the scoreline blowing out.

In the latter stages of the half, the momentum started to swing as Stirling settled and started to string together some passes. A typical run down the right wing from Ky Henry saw a cross well controlled by Silcock and then guided into the back of the net to level the scores. Shortly after, following a goal kick, pressure from Stirling saw Strathalbyn lose control of the ball on the edge of the area, and Silcock passed to Tom Harris who curled a lovely shot in to the top right corner to see Stirling take the lead. A final foray forward from Strathalbyn leading into half time seemed certain to level the scores, but a perfect tackle from Henry saw the ball go behind for a corner and the opportunity lost.

Stirling came out strongly in the second half, with the ball almost entirely forward of half way, but couldn’t find a way to score. Against the run of play, Strathalbyn had the ball down the other end in a flash, and with the ball bobbling away from the keeper, took the opportunity to even things up. Stirling continued to have chances, but Strathalbyn’s keeper continued to parry shot after shot away. Again Strathalbyn opened up Stirling on the fast break, with Kalan Brooks getting around the Stirling keeper and calmly giving Strathalbyn the lead.

In the final quarter hour, Stirling had multiple opportunities, but it appeared that Strathalbyn were going to hold them out, with shots from Henry Monaghan and Zac Gardiner-Sheridan being denied by great saves from the keeper. Then with only 4 minutes left, the ball fell for Ryan Stevens who levelled things up from short range.

The game finished in an entertaining 3-3 draw between two of the stronger teams in the division who will likely be in the mix at the end of the season.

Stirling Districts Soccer Club (2) vs Strathalbyn Strikers FC Inc White (4)

The match started with a wind that was so strong the players and spectators were unable to stand straight, but it didn't hinder the spirits of the Stirling Districts U13 girls division.

Under the guidance of their captain Rani Loizi the girls lost the toss but played their hardest to find them scoring the first goal against an amazingly coordinated and strong Strathalbyn White team. Just before Polly's superb goal in the 9th minute, Emma Dalton was knocking back many tries on goal with one of those moments being a double shot on goal with two amazing saves in the same shot. This is just the style of Emma though, as she did the exact same moves later on during the game. Although, the defense was tight and the attackers have improved large amounts, three goals were scored consecutively by Strathalbyn in minutes 20, 22, and 23.

The second half found Layla Preece face her biggest fears of being a goal keeper. She was shakey at first, but Layla proved to be a valuable goalie with many definite saves to the goal. As normal Charlotte Langley couldn't help herself and took shot at goal an in the 51st minute took her opportunity to get onto the score card.

Directly stated by their coach Bill, "What a cracking game girls!"

Strathalbyn Strikers FC Inc White (4) vs Stirling Districts Soccer Club (2)

A blustery day greeted the teams to Strath for this Round 4 fixture, both teams have had similar results leading into this week so it promised to be a good encounter.  Playing 10 a side with school holidays again effecting team numbers, Strath White started the stronger with several attempts on goal, most going above the crossbar.  Stirling broke through Strath's defence and made no mistake to take the lead.  Strath having subs made a difference with a couple of changes proving fruitful as Strath's striker Layla Frahn poking home her first.  Layla very quickly responded with two more well taken goals, benefitting from team play to get the ball there.  Estelle Dybala in midfield worked tirelessly to continue to provide Strath momentum going forward, providng passes to Leah Davis, Bonnie Clothier and Brooklyn Rigney.

Half Time 3-1

Further Strath changes at half time were wearing the Stirling girls out who kept on task and proving not everyone needs subs!  Strath scored a fourth and seemingly were content at the score line, however Stirling were not and kept fighting, forcing Matilda Mundy to use her face to keep the ball out of the net!  Stirling scored their second just minutes from the end of time.

An end to end game and full credit to Stirling who kept fighting really hard with two less players!

Hahndorf Soccer Club (6*) vs Strathalbyn Strikers FC Inc Red (0)

The Hahndorf U13G team played a stellar game to win 11-0 against Strathalbyn Red at Pine Avenue on Saturday.

Hahndorf looked confident from the start and dominated the first half. Excellent ball control and passing from all players set up a combined 6 goals from players Gracie Curtis, Ruby Tully and Jade Czukli.  When Strath was able to move the ball forward, Hahndorf’s defence was quick to diffuse it and return the ball to Hahndorf’s forward.

Strath came out fighting in the second half but Hahndorf remained confident. Curtis was busy all day and together with Eloise Cutting and Morenike Kelly made a tight team in attack, contributing to a total 5 goals for Hahndorf in the second half.

Throughout the game Esther Van De Gaer, Amiel Kerber, and Isabella Czukli kept the ball moving through the midfield for Hahndorf. Grace Haynes and Ruby Tully were strong in defence, supported by goalkeepers Ivy Wakelin in the first half and Charlotte Fairley in the second half.

The Hahndorf girls wish to thank Strathalbyn Red for the game..

Stirling Districts Soccer Club (2) vs Torrens Valley Soccer Club (5)

Well done to the formiddable Torrens U17 Girls, and congratulations to SDFC who defended well and narrowed the gap in goals from the previous game.  With injuries we had to pull both teams down to 10 each during the 2nd half, the girls played a hard game on a hard ground.  Well done Lucinda and Yasmin on the goals scored.

Match Report

Stirling District vs Torrens Valley

At the Birdwood Park ground it was indeed a wintery day with the sunshine although still cold but at least the rain stayed away.

It was a slow start for Torrens Valley but Stirling District came out of the blocks running.

Torrens Valley won the kick off and sent the ball into the Stirling District forward line.  Which the goalie (Elaine Miller) directed down to the Torrens Valley forwards however it came back and made the Torrens Valley defence work hard to prevent the  ball going in however Lucinda Trenorden scored the first goal of the game.

The ball then went from the middle into the Stirling District defence and Chantelle Doyle had a try on goal unfortunately missed, then there was a try by Zara Witter but that one missed as well.  The ball then headed up to the Torrens Valley defence and made their structure continue to work hard, with Aimee Hogan showing great skill in being the last line of defence for most of the game.  There was a Stirling District corner which was saved by Mikayla Witter whom directed it down towards the centre line which was intercepted by Stirling District and allowing Yasmin Elliot to score the next goal.  So Stirling District were leading by 2 – 0.  Torrens Valley scored their first goal at the 25 minute mark of the first half by Zara Witter.  Then Torrens Valley keeps pushing forward and the next goal was started by Zara Witter which the goalie deflect however Matilda Feast was close by and managed to kick it into the goal.

So at half time the score was 2-2 and the Torrens Valley team rearranged their team during the break.   Stirling District pressure did not let up and making it hard for Torrens Valley to score but luckily for Torrens Valley they managed to get another 3 before the end of the game.

The Stirling District setup was an interesting strategy with a defensive team structure  It threw the Torrens Valley side out for a while trying to work this strategy which continued throughout the game

Once again it was a great game and whenever these teams meet you know it is going to very strategic and disciplined game.

U17 Girls - Round 4

Woodside Warriors vs Murray Bridge United

18th July 2020

Woodside’s home game

With a cool Winter’s breeze keeping everyone on their toes, Round 4 commenced with Woodside’s kick off. Woodside made a great start by keeping possession and moving the play into their half. Though it didn’t take long for Murray Bridge’s defence to hold the line and clear the ball out. Murray Bridge proceeded to hold possession and moved the play into their half along with a shot on goal. Woodside’s defence and goal keeper were at the ready and cleared it away from goal giving Murray Bridge a corner kick. It was this moment where Woodside kicked into gear and ensured that play would take place in their half for the majority of the game. After a few attempts on goal, Woodside’s forward player and captain of the match Esther proceeded to challenge Murray Bridge’s defence and succeeded in getting the first goal of the game in the 24th minute. Spirits were high for Woodside, as this goal was to be the winning goal of the match along with being the very first goal of the season for Esther. Soon after kick off Esther again had an attempt on goal however Murray Bridge’s sweeper wasn’t going to let that happen and swiftly cleared the ball out of Woodside’s half into Murray Bridge’s half.

Half time saw Woodside up one nil. The game proceeded to continue with Woodside playing a more offence game. Woodside’s newest player Lauren displayed outstanding work playing up front alongside forward runners Esther, Tilly and Bethany. Though Murray Bridge didn’t make it easy and continued to play smart and strong ensuring the ball was cleared out of the box as soon as the ball entered the box.

Awesome work by all players on the pitch today, in particular Murray Bridge who played exceptionally well all round considering they were a few players short. Congratulations to Woodside for their very first win of the season and thank you to all those who came out to support the girls.
